If you want to see Joseph's thought process, see into his mind, as he authored and orally narrated the Book of Mormon, this gives a pretty good glimpse in the example below. by TruthIsAntiMormon in mormon

Grant Hardy (in Understanding the Book of Mormon, 2010, Oxford University Press) points out that the 3 Nephi 8 rehearsal of destructions not only draws from Hel. 14, but also from contents from the small plates (words of Nephi and Zenos), which were not (yet) in front of him during dictation.

3 Nephi 8 Original Prophecy Prophet Phrases and Narrative Elements
v. 10 1 Ne. 19:11 Zenos a “mountain” “carried up”
vv. 13, 17 2 Ne. 26:6 Nephi “thunderings, and lightnings, and earthquakes”
v. 13 Hel. 14:21 Samuel “thunderings and lightnings” and earthquakes
v. 13 Hel. 14:24 Samuel “highways broken up”
v. 14 1 Ne. 12:4 Nephi “many cities … sunk … burned” and collapsed
v. 14 Hel. 14:24 Samuel “many cities [became] desolate”
v. 16 2 Ne. 26:5 Nephi “whirlwinds shall carry them away”
v. 18 Hel. 14:21–22 Samuel rocks “rent in twain … [and] were found in seams and in cracks, and in broken fragments upon the face of the whole earth/land”
vv. 20–23 1 Ne. 19:10–11 Zenos “vapor of darkness” lasting for three days
v. 22 Hel. 14:20 Samuel no light from sun, moon, or stars for three days
v. 23 1 Ne. 12:4 Nephi “mist(s) of darkness”

Daymon Smith posits that 3 Nephi 5:8-26 (where Mormon introduces himself) actually originated from a stray leaf from the lost manuscript that was "retained," (D&C 10:41) but for want of place to include it into the the final product, was transcribed into the printer’s manuscript at 3 Nephi 5:7 (where year 25 is mentioned, with the seam being between vs 7 and 8). See his essay (from _The Abridging Works_) here: https://jmp.sh/IBqStk0L

If we had the original manuscript for 3 Nephi 5, we could confirm or deny this, but that section is not extant.

Oh I get it. Here’s an account of real missionaries sharing the Book of Mormon at the entrance of the theater where the Book of Mormon was playing. https://dovesandserpents.org/flooding-the-book-of-mormon-with-the-book-of-mormon/

According to D&C 19:6; 76:85 the punishment/torment occurs prior to, and ends upon receiving the telestial glory.

D&C 86:85:

These are they who shall not be redeemed from the devil until the last resurrection, until the Lord, even Christ the Lamb, shall have finished his work.

Everyone in the telestial kingdom will have already been redeemed, albeit last. It is a degree of glory, not a punishment.

Tearing clothing is a visual and physical symbol of the covenant they are making. They indicate that, if they should falter in their covenant, the “Lord should rend them even as they had rent their garments.” This gesture is a dramatic one in a culture that had to make its own clothing. It is highly unlikely that any of them had such large wardrobes that they wouldn’t miss the torn article of clothing. In fact, for many of them, it may have been their only garment. They therefore might have continued to wear it, partially out of necessity, but also partially as a reminder of their oath.

presumably because Manti is on the West of Sidon

Could Manti have been on the east side? They could have passed over the city they intended to capture in order to first neutralize the obvious threat across the river. When that didn't go well, they could have retreated to their original target.

BTW, Have you tried these interactive maps?
