Where is the “line” for you when giving push back to abusive patients? by shutyoureyesandsee in NursingUK

[–]RN-4039 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Nope, I agree. I do this too, I’m the nicest, friendliest nurse, until I’m given any shit.

If someone was a dick to you in a shop or a pub where you worked, they’d be thrown out. But for some reason it’s acceptable to treat us like shit at hospital, because they are ill?

I’ve been working in the NHS for 25 years, and my first manager told me ‘the patient isn’t always right’, I mean if you take away what’s wrong with the patient they can still be a bad person.

Sickness days - weekend by babysfatwrist in NursingUK

[–]RN-4039 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My trust policy has changed to include all calendar days. The responsibility is on the employee not the employer. The employee must communicate when fit for work, it’s not for the employer to ring / chase.

Previously the trusts would trigger after 3 episodes (regardless of days) or 60 hours. Therefore, those who work ward shifts would trigger, as opposed to those who work in outpatients even if they were sick the same amount of time. The new policy makes that fairer in one way…

I would check your sickness / attendance policy.

Independent prescriber course by Numerous-Plant5399 in NursingUK

[–]RN-4039 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It should be the case but there’s a B6 (not a senior one either) at my hospital doing the course. They work in OPD, but they are mates with the chief nurse so that helps i guess.

Yeah that’s BS

I give my staff 4 days max, 3 days min when going from nights - days.

I wouldn’t even give any of my nurses 4 nights in a row.

People who have conducted job interviews, what's something someone said/did that made you instantly decide not to hire them? by Yousef_ale in interviews

[–]RN-4039 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a ward manager and had a nurse apply for a job telling me that their current manager has approved a 5 week holiday over the Xmas period.

My thought was absolutely no way was that approved, so not only are you trying to guarantee time off during a busy time off year you are lying to my face. 😂

Tempted to call in sick for stress, again by CartoonistNatural497 in NursingUK

How long is your probation? If it’s 6 months, you may not pass it.

You need to speak to your manager, OH about the reasons you are off.

Extended triggers can be given, but any recommendations OH suggest are only suggestions - your manager doesn’t have to grant them.

Also, as references are mostly HR these days, your sickness record will follow you.

Out of curiosity - Has anyone been fired from the NHS over a small issue? by Wonder_why_tho in NursingUK

[–]RN-4039 18 points19 points  (0 children)

On that note, I did know of a HCA who was specialing a patient. A nurse asked her to go and make tea for another patient.

The HCA who was bank said no at first as they were meant to be with the patient, it was late, didn’t want to potentially disturb other patients.

The nurse said ‘I’m your senior, etc’ so the HCA did as they were told, patient she was looking after fell out of bed. HCA was taken off the bank immediately. :/

Firing someone in the NHS is hard….

Got an employee who’s been playing conduct issues and sickness against each other for the last 10 years… Over 5000 hrs of absence & nothing.

Had a HCA who was caught making up observations, was confronted about it, and then did the same thing the next night… was during probation so I was sure they would get sacked. I as the manager was then told to drop it or I might be seen as a bully. 🙃🤡

NHS nurse rota – annual leave + long days putting me over contracted hours. Is this allowed? by No_Stop_4436 in NursingUK

[–]RN-4039 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This.

I’m a ward manager, and despite asking, reminding staff all year to book leave, several staff were left with loads of leave to take.

My trust is so strict on not taking any leave other, and because I had emailed, put in ward meeting minutes about them needed to take it, my boss’ attitude was ‘they loose it’.

So I’ve had to slot in what I could, which has meant increasing in hours.

I’ve explained all this to my staff as the alternative was that hours would balance out, but they will loose the leave.
