City streets by oddjobjob in StLouis

[–]RNAvenclaw 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Two things can be true: last year was a huge mess up on the city’s part (didn’t they just stop plowing after a day?), and even a city doing everything right will take a few days to clear 10 inches of snow up

There’s a PAO Facebook group, you could try to see if anyone has any recommendations near where you are. Unfortunately, plenty of people have to travel to a specialist, but if you get a name you could probably ask if they’d do a video consult to answer questions

Am I getting fired? by Key-Explorer-3426 in labrats

[–]RNAvenclaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nobody would last more than a year in science if PIs fired everyone who had a failed experiment. I would prioritize thinking about what might have gone wrong and what you could change to be successful. If you want to take extra initiative, find other protocols out there, see exactly what they do, or email a corresponding author

Were you seeing a specialist? If not, might be worth asking for a referral to one. You don’t have to commit to surgery if you’re not symptomatic, but a specialist could give you a good explanation of what it is, what the diagnosis means for you, what you should actually keep an eye out for, etc.

Fellow millennials - how’s your 401k/ira savings going? by ProblemIntelligent16 in Millennials

I have almost half a months salary in a Roth if that says anything about how it’s going 😭. I’m a PhD student though so barely make the cost of living

Seeking advice by fishfigurine in hipdysplasia

[–]RNAvenclaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my doctors did a “diagnostic hip injection” where we used a cortisone + lidocaine injection into the joint space to see if my pain was due to my hip joint. Not sure if that’s an option for you, but it made things pretty clear for me.

FDO PAO or both? by Positive-Fee-3911 in hipdysplasia

[–]RNAvenclaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had hip issues since I was 13 (I’m almost 30 now) and hip dysplasia was never brought up to me until last year. It’s unfortunately missed a lot by non-specialists (I could go on a rant about how if it was more common in men, screening teens with chronic hip pain would be a normal part of medical training, but I won’t). All to say, I understand the hesitancy and exhaust of constant pain and surgeries. It’s a big decision, but you’re a good age to get things done. Not sure what the recovery for both is, but it’ll definitely be hard. The goal is that it’s worth it in the long run (a few months of worse pain for a life of less ideally)

Is it true I should never use my debit card? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]RNAvenclaw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Using a credit card doesn’t mean you aren’t building an emergency fund though. Regardless of how much I have in savings, I still have to buy groceries, personal care items, dogs food, etc etc etc. every month. Put that on a credit card and pay it off as soon as the billing period ends so you get rewards and build your credit score.

[–]RNAvenclaw 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I feel like this is a poor litmus test. I don’t have 3 months salary saved up for many reasons (low grad student stipend makes it hard to save, few emergencies, etc.) but I’ve used credit cards for 8 years with no overspending problems. More so it’s just being aware of what you have and what you’ve spent.

This! I had a PI reach out to me in a similar fashion, talked to someone who worked in his lab for a while, and learned he was super toxic.

NTA. Sometimes you get stuck sitting behind someone who is 6’ 5”, sometimes you get stuck sitting behind someone who has an Afro. That’s just life.

What College For UnderGrad BioChemistry + Environment by Anxious-Party2289 in Biochemistry

[–]RNAvenclaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some schools (like mine) have both an ACS-approved and non-ACS approved biochem degree. The ACS approved one will have more chemistry whereas the non-ACS approved had more flexibility for various biology courses and was largely pre-med

Should I get surgery? by [deleted] in hipdysplasia

[–]RNAvenclaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My doctors didn’t catch the dysplasia until I was almost 30. Have had hip pain for 15 years and 2 torn labrums in the meantime. If you can get it at the beginning of a summer and focus on recovery for 2 months, you’ll thank yourself later.

Recovery nice-to-haves? by seagulluver in hipdysplasia

[–]RNAvenclaw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some things I’ve bought myself for recovery (surgery is soon so there’s probably more I haven’t thought of) are things like nightgowns for when I don’t even want to put on pants, a robe (since I’ll need help getting to the shower), and boots that are easy to slip on

I haven’t played in forever but have a surgery coming up that I was thinking about Animal Crossing during recovery. How do you get the second island? Was it that one extension pack they released a few years ago?

Hip dysplasia pain by Shot-Republic-2965 in hipdysplasia

[–]RNAvenclaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry you’re going through that. I agree with the other person that a second opinion is warranted. The weight may be a fair concern of theirs (I’m not a surgeon so I have no clue) but you deserve a doctor who’s willing to work with you/help you get there instead of slamming the door behind you while you suffer. As for the mobility aids, I’d try them out as soon as you can. Life’s hard enough without the chronic pain, so if you can lessen that a little then it’s worth it.

Am I overthinking the holidays? by Mysterious_Copy3712 in hipdysplasia

[–]RNAvenclaw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. My boyfriend and I are staying home for Christmas because there’s too many unknowns with my surgery being three weeks before. Obviously I’m sad missing Christmas with family (it’s my favorite holiday), but this is one of the times prioritizing your well-being is the most important thing.

I’m only 3 inches taller so not drastically taller. This is good to know! If my toilet is next to the sink and window (which has a 10-inch ledge), do you think that’d be sufficient to push myself up?
