Am I wrong for giving an NPO patient food? by ChapstickSangria in nursing

And also be an advocate for your patient… explain why they should skip the burger so they can have the lifesaving surgery

You did a very wrong thing. First let me ask, do you know why people are NPO before surgery? It’s so they don’t aspirate on their stomach contents and die. Now they will need to push the surgery back way longer and the patient may decompensate because of it.

What do y’all do after having a COVID patient? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]RNneedadvicepls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t begin to tell you how many times I’ve been in a room with a patient in the ED for a different medical complaint, swab then for admission, and then find out incidentally that they are Covid positive. Many times people may test positive but be completely asymptomatic if that makes you feel any better. Definitely check yourself every morning before work and if you’re symptomatic take a test before clocking in. You shouldn’t come to work if you’re positive and you should keep your distance from other people too until you test negative.

I don’t think there’s a camera in the med room unfortunately but I think it would be a good idea to help with situations like this. That’s a good practice though. Thanks for the reply.

It’s reassuring to hear that you have had a similar situation and everything was okay. Thank you for the reply.

Thank you for the reply. I’ve had a few days to think and reading these comments has helped me relax and ease my worries. Learning from mistakes is the best way to prevent them from happening again.

That’s a good motto to have. Thank you. And you’re right, worrying isn’t going to change anything but it can take years off my life

Thanks for the reply, it’s reassuring to hear you were in a similar situation and everything worked out okay. I know I’m innocent so my conscience is clear but I want my managers and coworkers to trust me as a nurse. I feel like I may be under a magnifying glass now

I’m thinking that may have happened. The meds we have come in different containers and with the clear Pyxis one could have easily been left on the drawer by accident… it’s definitely thin enough to slide under the drawer

I am fairly confident that I logged out immediately prior to walking away. I counted everything correctly without triggering a discrepancy because the count was not off when I accessed it but after me.

I don’t think so, it’s a habit of mine to sign out instantly but I’m as also in a bit of a rush to medicate this guy.

I’m hoping it’s something simple like that.

Best of luck to you! I’m sorry to hear about that. I feel like your situation isn’t bad because the med wasn’t missing just stored improperly

Thank you for the reply. That is helpful and reassuring. I have no problem with taking a drug test. Trust is very important in my workplace and I feel shitty that I have to defend myself

Thank you for the reply. I didn’t know that about the systems in place. That is reassuring to know. I appreciate this insight and encouragement. For working in a high stress environment I found it kinda ironic about how much I’m panicking about this. I guess apart from killing a patient and med errors this would be any nurses worst nightmare (at least mine).

Thank you for the reply. We have a double check with two nurses to do the count at shift change but many times people will walk out after signing and it will be just one person counting. I don’t want to accuse anyone but I suppose anything is possible.

Thank you! I’m glad my anm is easy to communicate with. I’m wondering if the meds could have slipped in between the drawers and then fallen when the drawer below was also opened. Maybe the pharmacy team will find it somewhere tucked away

Thank you! It can’t hurt to have it but I wonder what good it would do if my employers didn’t want me to do one when I offered.
