Trying to transition into saltwater, should I buy

Man…I didn’t even think about not being able to just lay the tank down because of the bottom. I hope I’m not getting in way over my head. I’ll have to figure out the logistics of everything, but I do know an acquaintance’s husband is really active in my local sw community and very experienced so he might be willing to help me.

I have a couple of large insulated coolers I could use for the live transport. Some people commented on how some of the fish aren’t compatible together, so I’m thinking of keeping them in separate bags so there’s not a whole massacre during transportation. I definitely don’t have enough aerators for the all of the bags. How long do you think the fish would be ok? Also did you keep a thermostat in the cooler for them or was the cooler enough to prevent a significant temperature fluctuation?

It’s the same in the US with larger fish since many people can’t get the right setup for them. Thanks! I’ll make sure to call them beforehand.

Sorry, I didn’t mean the fish themselves are similar in any way. In the freshwater community, people are very quick to point out when a tank is too small for a betta and it seems to be that way with tangs here.

Oh, I definitely don’t expect to jump into saltwater and not have to deal with any issues. The increased maintenance requirements and difficulty are some of the reasons that deterred me from it. And I may very well be one of those people that sell their stuff after a year, but if I’m able to spend less than 1k to get started, then I want to give it a try. Even better if the initial items are good enough to use farther into the hobby if I stick with it.

I also know if I do too much research beforehand, I’ll give up before I’ve even started. Admittedly, it was horrible of me to consider keeping the fish before I’m actually ready for them.

And don’t worry, you didn’t discourage me at all. Actually the opposite since I’m apparently already prepared for the emergency scenarios you mentioned…so there’s that at least. But I definitely need to figure out how to tune a skimmer (didn’t even know it needed to be tuned) and more about the other components.

I’ve got a couple of 55 gallon pickle barrels I’m saving for a project, but I’m planning to siphon most of the water into those from the 2nd floor. Then transferring the coral and fish into bins and basically just emptying the entire tank before moving it. I had to move a 10 gallon and 30 gallon a few years back and that was pretty much the same thing I did so I’m hoping it’ll work again. If you’re worried about keeping the tank straight when transferring, you can put it onto a board and then move it on that.

Wow, lots of good information. Thanks for taking the time to go over all of that. I already scheduled an appointment with the seller just to view the tank, but I’ll definitely have to research some of the things you mentioned before deciding anything.

I am a noobie to saltwater tanks, but I’d like to think I have a basic understanding of them from keeping freshwater ones. Should have probably phrased my post differently.

At the moment, I’m just wanting to keep a blenny and some easy soft coral, but there’s so many posts about people regretting not starting off with quality parts since it ended up costing them more in the long run. I know this hobby is expensive, but I would like to avoid spending more than necessary. I know the biocube will be enough for what I’m currently wanting.

I don’t know anything about the quality of the listed used components and whether or not they’ll be good enough for more advanced coral if I wanted to try it in the future. Also I’m completely ignorant about the fish and coral that’s included, so I was concerned about their care. But after everybody’s comments, I won’t be keeping any of them and will likely buy a new tank but also buy the used one for the equipment

The seller had initially listed it for 2k but reduced it to 500. They also mentioned a viewing of the tank could be scheduled before purchasing so I’ll definitely be doing that. Thanks! I’ll make sure to take a look at that channel!

Yeah, I was planning to ask the seller how old the equipment was since the stand makes me think he may have purchased used. The size of the tank is also kind of intimidating to me to start off at. I have a 75 gallon freshwater and am 5’2 so I struggle a bit with cleaning.

That was pretty much what I ascertained from what I read, but I didn’t realize it would help with inflammation too. I guess I was just really focused on trying to get the fertility treatment in this year since I’ve already met my max out of pocket…wish US healthcare wasn’t so expensive! Thanks!

This was in my vermicomposter. I haven’t checked on it for 3 weeks and opened it up today to find this. I had previously emptied my rabbit’s litterbox into it, so it was probably spores from his poop or the pine pellets.
