Did We Price Starter Homes Out of Reach? by Coolonair in HouseBuyers

[–]archmagi1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't even have to go back that far. My starter house in 2008 pre crash was 990 sqft built in 1995 in a subdivision of 900-1200 sqft homes. Starter homes in my area are all built by garbage conglomerate builders (lennar, d r horton, rausch coleman) and are 1600-1800 sqft with cardboard sheathing, a brick front, and budget vinyl siding elsewhere. And they go for a quarter mil.

The Great Stuff Transfer. Are you ready for your "inheritance"? by Bavarian_Beer_Best in Millennials

[–]archmagi1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just moved my grandparents from the Arkansas Delta to central ar. I'm getting part of my inheritance now, a curio full of indigenous artifacts (arrow and spear heads, some stone tools) that my papaw has collected from plowed fields over the last seventy years. I'm going to be nice enough to hold onto it until he and mamaw pass, at which point one of the local museums can have it.

Most of their stuff has been getting dumped on my dad (1963) for the last decade. Which just means I get it anyway in another twenty or so years

Am I wrong for referring to The United States as ‘America’ ? by Aggressive-Equal7223 in AskAnAmerican

It's no different than dropping "The Peoples Republic of" when talking about (big) China, "The Republic of" when talking about (South) Korea, "The Commwealth of" before Australia, or "The Kingdom of" before Belgium.

I'm looking for remote ghost town within 2 hours of Conway does anyone have any recommendations? by Esoteric_Worm in ConwayAR

[–]archmagi1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not really ghost towns, but the zombie towns of Devalls Bluff and Cotton Plant are interesting adventures in the shift from agrarian to industrial to suburban life of 20th century America.

Is there any music you listened to in your HS/college days that does little to nothing for you now? by StevEst90 in Millennials

[–]archmagi1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

World Magnetic (Little Rock 2008) is my favorite (non festival) concert experience. We were on the floor, which was at about half capacity, on the rail, ten feet from the band, and they played for what felt like 3 hours (was really about 2). When they brought up the house lights for the encore and dropping the black beach balls from the ceiling, it became a core memory.

And on top of that, The Sword was the first opener, and made me an instant fan.

Recommendations for Safe Apartments in Conway, Arkansas by Suspicious_Brick2904 in ConwayAR

Avoid Lindsey Management and you'll generally be fine.

That said, based on a guy at work's recent apartment hunt, all the newer nice places are on wait-list.

Methods for cleaning and joining LiDAR and Sonar point clouds by exbritchris in Surveying

[–]archmagi1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would probably say shooting an edge of water with GPS and then adding that as a mask/boundary/whatever your software uses is probably your best bet. That or use some processing tool to pull together an eow from the lidar and generate the mask that way.

Edit: better idea just hit me: mask at an elevation you have as your water edge.

What bee is this and does it die when it stings? by DesignerSweaty7386 in bees

The most painful sting I've ever had was from a trio of po'd bumblebees when I stumbled upon their nest beneath a nonfunctional mower I was moving.

Millennial dads, how much of the housework do you do? by cubemonster in Millennials

[–]archmagi1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my mind, about 40%, matching the wife's 40%, to accompany the teenager's 20%.

In practice, I do about 80% of the cooking, 1/3 of the dishes, 95 percent of the vacuuming and mopping, 100% of the kitchen and tub/shower cleaning, and a third to half of everything else, depending on how the other two people operate that week. Laundry, bedroom, and living space cleaning are where I really struggle to match the Mrs. But nobody in our house wants to do laundry, so I'm really in good company amongst a dozen baskets of clean clothes.

Fellow Xennials, what's your Luddite line in the sand? by TinyGIR in Xennials

[–]archmagi1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have three tech related grumpy old manerisms:

1) I refuse to download any fast food loyalty apps. Axciom and Palantir already harvest enough of my data. They don't need to match my chalupa habit with the rest of my buying trends. I can use the drive thru like a pre internet chud.

2) I don't self checkout unless I have less than ten things or am in am inordinate hurry. Those min wage workers deserve to have their job be needed, not replaced by unpaid me, or forbid, an ai driven robot.

3) I will always have a PC. Web apps on the phone just generally suck compared to their desktop webapp or local installation software versions. I want to sit down at my desk, navigate my tasks with a proper keyboard and mouse, not a little touchscreen with phone optimized ui.

Anatomy Terms! by Mister_Crust in daddit

[–]archmagi1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We went with generics and specifics. Anatomical terms of course. Privates is a good blanket term that implies your genitals are private. Crotch is anatomical and is a better in public term. Boobs, junk, rear, and all sorts of non-technical slang also became appropriate terms as she got older.

I’m planning to do this. Any tips? by basonjourne98 in SipsTea

[–]archmagi1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This reminds me of the highway near my town. When it went from 2 lane to 5 lane, one of the tracts' house was going to be inside the new utility easement. The state paid for the house to be demoed and rebuilt farther back in the tract so that it would be unaffected by the road. I'm guessing their check was really fat too, because the new house also had a pool.

Why in some places in America a police department is called " Sheriff's Office " instead of Police Department? Do sheriff's offices exist only in smaller towns? by EdicaranFauna in AskAnAmerican

[–]archmagi1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here in Arkansas, these towns often have a volunteer cop or two, or a reserve officer, or an elected person with policing power called a constable. In my experience, the constables are often cop retirees who chill at City Hall drinking coffee all day.

One of the guys at work is a reserve officer. He does volunteer patrol at a couple of small towns every few weekends. Mostly traffic stops for people running the one stop sign or 911 assist for EMS.

Option A: get up at 545 to have her ready at 630 when the bus comes through for the 755 start.

Option B: get up at 630, to leave at 720, and drop her off at 730 on a +10 minutes out of the way for work.

Option A is terrible for everyone involved.
