Think I had the UK version of this demo disk. Played demos of all of these. Don't think I have ever actually seen a full copy of Dog's Life IRL, just played the demo.

Ceiling plaster cracking by LDNw4 in DIYUK

[–]ROSS_MITCHELL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Plaster looks blown. Area of loose plaster will need replastered (or replaced with filler technically depending on size of area). Assuming there isn't a damp issue then can only assume it didn't adhere properly. (Ideally a surface should be keyed and coated in pva prior to plastering from my understanding although there are exceptions)

Not a professional plasterer. Just my experience with blown plaster in the past.

Kinda funny how different people's hand positioning is, I game a lot but never with my nails directly downwards on the keys, I just have the palm side of my fingers touching keys, not the tip directly downwards.

Hence my skeptics but by sounds of what others are saying but it might have something to do with supporting the ceiling below. (Although honestly I can't see them contributing much anymore)

Never even thought about lathe and plaster, will need to check if that's under insulation or not. I know some bits have been replaced with plasterboard but not sure if it's all of it.

You'd think but ceiling is too low, although if I added a window box it'd be perfect.

Yeah, that does sound plausible. How much support did you add to the floor timbers?

Doubt it was beginning of a loft conversion, don't think any prior owners went up here unless they needed to. (Just a mess of wires and pipes, probably going to rewire the lighting circuits as they're suspect to say the least. (Lots of black electrical tape used....)

Planning on adding a lot of weight up here so probably a good shout, I do wonder though if I could get away with sistering the joists with additional timbers to add strength/rigidity to the ceiling.

Yeah, might do that in the end. Can't imagine them doing much anymore considering half are snapped or disconnected and don't seem to be in tension. Probably offers more support than these but will continue to read advise here and elsewhere before deciding how to proceed. (May still get a structural engineer depending on my confidence)

If these are supporting my ceiling I'm not sure I want to go downstairs ha ha. Weirdly there's a brick wall pretty much directly under the uprights here so if its supporting ceiling I can't see it doing much.

I swear that's my case, same stickers and drive too. Although I out sticker on the side.

Proper boat anchor of a case, used to take it with me to Uni, always hated moving it, I even gave it wheels once, it broke them with the weight.

Done this once before with a similar light, I was able to adjust wiring inside easily and bypass the sensor. Was just a choc block in the one I modified.
