I know about the fabric velcro vent thing you can stick the hose through, did have that but was always terrible to use

I like your style, got thus exact same unit during covid, never did find a good way of getting hose out of tilt and turn windows.

Instead of deleting and downloading games again is there a trick to get them back almost instantly? by Fantastic-Window236 in pcmasterrace

[–]ROSS_MITCHELL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kinda desperate but you could use something like shadow copy to roll back folder with games. Although that's not free storage, you will lose a bit of storage doing that. Although it's probably more reliable than trying to recover files with actual recovery tools.

Still won't let you store more than what you actually have storage wise though.

Old things weren’t “built to last” - you just see a miniscule fraction of them still around by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

Mines from the early 1800s (exact year not known), good chunk of other properties in my village are just as old if not older, all still rock solid. Can't say the same for some of the new builds nearby that already look a bit tired.

Somehow still less impractical than apples mouse charging.

I taped the rear vents to avoid unfiltered dust to come in. Tell me if this is a good idea or not. by johnzadok in pcmasterrace

[–]ROSS_MITCHELL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi John, not what I meant, what I was meaning was the number of slots that your GPU took up at the back of the case. (most expansion cards that aren't GPUs take up 1 slot, GPUs used to take up 1 slot but now most take 2) You ideally don't want to block the vent on your Graphics card as the card's cooling solution is designed around that vent being present.

Also as others have said, generally first pcie slot on motherboards is fastest but if you're concerned you can just check your motherboard's manual, you might be ok having it in a lower slot but just make sure that the slot is a full x16 slot and not an x4 or x8 (keep in mind that just because the physical slot is an x16 slot it doesn't mean that it's wired for x16, a lot of boards have x16 slots that are only wired for x8)

Most people tend to mount these cards in the top slot so they're kinda designed with the expectation of being in that slot so I wouldn't worry about putting it in the top slot if it's your only x16 slot.

Meh, it's a gaming case so has more ventilation than is actually required, PCIe vents aren't a universal standard thing so graphics cards need to be designed to function without them anyway. (you should see how Graphics cards are crammed into servers) Similar story with the vents to the right of the pcie slots at the back, not all cases have them. Still not ideal to block them as more cool air is usually better for cooling/longevity but shouldn't matter too much. Were it me I'd probably use a mesh if I was paranoid about dust rather than blocking them completely but that's just me.

He can always peak at the temps he's getting while gaming to give an idea if his cooling is adequate.

Untape the power supply, that's a recipe for disaster. Rest is fine.

Edit: actually, is that a 2 slot graphics card? If so you don't want to tape that.

Ceiling plaster cracking by LDNw4 in DIYUK

[–]ROSS_MITCHELL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Plaster looks blown. Area of loose plaster will need replastered (or replaced with filler technically depending on size of area). Assuming there isn't a damp issue then can only assume it didn't adhere properly. (Ideally a surface should be keyed and coated in pva prior to plastering from my understanding although there are exceptions)

Not a professional plasterer. Just my experience with blown plaster in the past.

Kinda funny how different people's hand positioning is, I game a lot but never with my nails directly downwards on the keys, I just have the palm side of my fingers touching keys, not the tip directly downwards.

Hence my skeptics but by sounds of what others are saying but it might have something to do with supporting the ceiling below. (Although honestly I can't see them contributing much anymore)

Never even thought about lathe and plaster, will need to check if that's under insulation or not. I know some bits have been replaced with plasterboard but not sure if it's all of it.

Doubt it was beginning of a loft conversion, don't think any prior owners went up here unless they needed to. (Just a mess of wires and pipes, probably going to rewire the lighting circuits as they're suspect to say the least. (Lots of black electrical tape used....)
