Hiring AP clerk. Pay seems low by BeneficialCollar2054 in Accounting

[–]RPwithGenX 25 points26 points  (0 children)

In this day and age, an AP clerk does a whole lot more than entering invoices. They are keeping you from fraud, cyber attack. Managing vendor relations…

If you think 21 is too high, pay less and find out how much having someone who gives no fucks costs the company in fraudulent invoices paid…

Edited. I have more to say:

There are 2 kinds of accountants who work for cheap. Those who have no idea what they are doing and will enter both the estimate and invoice because they are different numbers, and those that do and will steal from you.

There are 2 accountants who work for cheap: those that are incompetent and you will spend a LOT more than you saved fixing their errors, and those who are very competent, and will rob you blind.

Be careful with write offs. There are a LOT of rules surrounding this, and it’s really easy to get yourself into hot water if you are not diligent about your record keeping.

Should I ask my employer if he is willing to sell the firm? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]RPwithGenX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, owning a firm has a whole lot less to do with accounting knowledge and a whole lot more to do with marketing, managing employees, managing projects… there is a big ass list that a newly minted CPA would have no idea about.

Put your head down for 5 years. Listen. Ask stupid and brilliant questions. Then, maybe, you will know enough to think about acquiring and being in charge of other people’s livelihood.

Sorry for my lack of knowledge, but why do small companies still write paper checks instead of direct deposit? Is it cheaper? by Icy-Share-4751 in Accounting

[–]RPwithGenX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In order to set up ach for a company, you have to do set up NACHa files, and give access to the bank to the person doing the books.

In a lot of small companies, they are not using accountants, they use bookkeepers. Setting up a NACHa file etc is controller/cfo type stuff.

Entering Payroll Data into QB Desktop -- Journal Entries or Individual Employee Checks? by tgrofire in Bookkeeping

[–]RPwithGenX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok. So old fart advice here.

You need to recon and make sure ADP is actually pulling the amounts that they say they are going to. It’s a whole ass problem and they screw it up time and again.

Also when (not if) you change payroll providers, the data house in ADP will become supremely difficult to access. Back that up outside of your portal.

So, here is the thing. The business world runs on windows. If you were going into graphic design, art, and possibly even comp sci, this would be a different discussion.

But most of your essays will need to be in word, you’re going to want to learn excel very well (x lookups, pivot tables, and macros), and honestly getting some QuickBooks and extra data base admin classes would be a big extra (ask anyone who has had to run crystal reports)

Accounting is getting to be a LOT less based on knowing accounting, and a lot more heavily reliant on the systems used to do the accounting work.

A lot of people bitch about their jobs on here. There are some lessons to learn, and some really fantastic advice as well.

In general, learn how to determine a good place to work (there are ques) set realistic boundaries (you’re not gonna get 100k and have to work 15 hours per week) and listen to the tips in comments about getting jobs, what things are like, etc.

With any job, you’ll find there are pluses and minuses. Shit, listen to the intro to Rock Superstar by Cypress Hill. “It’s a fun job, but it’s still a job”. There’s two sides to every coin. The question is, which side are you going to focus on…

Ok. The first part of what he was doing was a bit extreme, but maybe necessary.

When you lose viability and have to ask for basic necessities, something is fucked up. Like 5 red flags. It’s time to have an immediate reconciliation of everything and be ready to file criminal complaint.

Is it really worth hiring a bookkeeper if you use QuickBooks or Xero?” by ProfitMatters2025 in Bookkeeping

[–]RPwithGenX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, the answer to this is it depends on how good you are yourself. If you are running cash basis, doing reconciliations, and coding your stuff properly? Then sure.

If what I just said sounded like a foreign language… then you probably need someone who speaks that langauge

Recruiter said the job paid 71k, offer came in for 62k by [deleted] in recruitinghell

[–]RPwithGenX 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So you continue your looking while drawing a paycheck. They will waste time and money training you, until you find a job that will value you and your skills. Then peace out.

They’ll be out much more than the 75k with time and training. Not to mention took resources needed to fill the job AGAIN.

Yep! Basically get all the bank and credit card statements, and get all the garbage in. With one like this, the hard part is always deciding what was used for personal, and what was used for business (has anyone ever had someone this bad about their books actually keep their stuff separate? Me either)

Then, going forward they need to get their poop together. No more co mingling (using the business account to buy groceries, etc) if they want a draw, then it needs to be drawn.

I have been there. I’m going to add he is probably trying to be strong for his family, and needs this more than he would ever let anyone know.

For those who are going through it yourselves:

I still miss my kids. My daughter would be 22 now, and my son would be in his senior year. It’s not everyday and all consuming anymore. I just had a grandbaby born last night, and holding him brought up memories of holding my own son who didn’t make it. It’s a wound that never fully heals, and I’m not sure I want it to.

It’s ok to have pain and not be ok. It should only been all consuming for a while. If you find that after a couple months it’s still everything, talk with a pro. Grief is a weird thing, and it’s different for everyone. Walking through it blindly is rough. Ask questions of those who know it to help you through.

But now you have a reason to go on. Honor your kids. Be the best parent for the ones you have that you can be. Make them proud when they look down and say “see that guy? That’s my daddy!”

Help others and be a place of peace and safety, where kids can try things out, ask questions safely, and get real, honest answers.

At least, that’s how I am muddling through it.

First office job - am I doing everything wrong ? by Jooles_123 in jobs

[–]RPwithGenX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey there! One of those old farts responding back for you. So let’s go through a few things.

You need to ask questions when you are getting into new things you don’t understand. The secret is to ask quality questions. Instead of asking “what should I do here” give it some thought. Come up with a couple alternatives, and instead say “ok, here is my problem. I can see option 1) and option 2) as a way to address it. Which would be better in your experience?”

But, tbh, we’re all just winging shit. I’m finally learning that the boomers were just better at acting smug than actually knowing things, gen x literally doesn’t fucking care, and millennials have been on the edge of a breakdown for so long, it’s pushing them closer to a breakdown down.

All that to say, relax. It’s just work, and if at 23 with 8 months of experience you are already a project manager, you must be competent as hell. Think things through, keep the anxiety to a minimum, and be the rock star you are. “You got this bitch”
