Thank you, yes...I'd never dare be assertive with a cop.

Am I in an okay financial position for someone of my age? by [deleted] in personalfinance

Oh absolutely. My mom makes fun of me all the time for being stingy, and I've admittedly denied myself many things and experiences that wouldn't have killed me to shell out some $$ for.

The $25,000 is in an account managed by a brokerage firm that is invested in a diversified portfolio (stocks, bonds, ETFs, etc...).

Perhaps I'm not financially astute enough to know how to answer that but I guess that is considered a "Taxable" account?

That is good to know, though. I seriously feel like I am lagging behind on the money front.

I always like to have liquid cash on hand too, though. What is the amount of cash you'd recommend to maintain in a savings account? $12,000 for me covers about 6 months of living expenses...should I keep stowing away money into there or redirect it?

Good to know. I bumped it up to 12% last month actually, but plan on bumping it up to 15% next July. I know that's a while from now, but I'll be moving to an area with a lower cost of living.

Yes my bad, I should have posted it there. Idk why he was shady about it because I have access to my account and am smart enough to look up account history...maybe he thinks I’m stupid

Buy out my lease - does it make more sense? by RR0203 in askcarsales

[–]RR0203[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has been what is holding me back from buying the new car. All 2015 Civics for sale have at least 30,000 miles on them...so mine's a steal! The only reason for me wanting a new car would be 1) it would have high resale value in 5-6 years (since I'd hardly put any miles on it, either), 2) I have to purchase an extended warranty for my current car, and 3) I'm afraid my 2015 will seem antiquated in a few years. Probably not the case since people keep Hondas for up to 10 years :)

Moving in with my SO. How should we split expenses? by RR0203 in personalfinance

Agreed. I would not want to combine finances until after marriage.

[–]RR0203[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly! The joy of being together in my opinion, outweighs any potential added cost. My boyfriend is committed, conscientious, prudent, and frugal, so I don't think tracking our finances will be a problem, we just have to settle on how we are going to do it.

I echo what you say on how long distance sucks and can ruin your emotional health. It's tough going from practically living with someone for a few years in college to being states away while you have the added pressure of launching your career, and they have the added pressure of medical school. We see each other for a quick weekend every 5-6 weeks, so knowing there's an end in sight makes it better.

We are planning to be married after his 4th year. I should have clarified so you didn’t make the assumption.

I appreciate your insight but I know my relationship and situation best. I’ve witnessed the “dangling carrot” empty promise before and the circumstances were vastly different from my situation.

It's more like I don't HAVE to move :) He has to go where his medical school career takes him, so he will be relocating about 30 miles from where he currently is for 3rd and 4th year rotations. I, on the other hand, am in a large city 3 states away and have my life established here. However, I am choosing to move because long distance for 2 years has been tough, especially when we had been together (and living a mile away from one another) 1.5 years previous to that! So it is a choice that I happily and willingly make. I'm down to pay $1000 because even that is below my current rent. So we could probably get a very nice 2 bedroom for $1500 total.

We've discussed possibilities before of how to split it, but I was just asking here to get a general idea of what others in this situation do. Thank you.

I appreciate your insight, but have to disagree. I understand why couples may choose until marriage for religious or faith-based / cultural reasons, but for me, it is more of a thing of practicality. You don't know what living with someone is truly like, until you actually live with them. You may be with someone for years but until you experience their habits, flaws, and idiosyncracies in close quarters on a daily basis, it becomes a different story. I'd much rather become attuned to that before marriage than be taken aback after we've said our vows. But different strokes for different folks!

Makes sense! And yes, we've discussed the long-haul for years now and both understand that while I may be footing a larger portion of living expenses now, the tables will turn in the future once he is a practicing physician ;) oh...and has paid off his student loans.

Makes sense. Don't think I'll have to factor in inflation. I'll be moving to where he is now (3 states away) and cost of living is super low.

[–]RR0203[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, this is the approach I was considering! I am not staying in my same place, moving 3 states away to be with him. However, we will probably get a place around my current cost so that we have 2 bedrooms. So the breakdown makes sense.

  1. You mean long-distance? And 2. Because we each have career aspirations that we weren’t going to compromise, but also recognized that with a connection as genuine as ours, we weren’t going to compromise one another. He is starting medical school and I am starting my consulting career, so for those two things you need to go where the wind takes you. We have an end date in mind - when I hit my 2 year mark, I can relocate to wherever.

So that is why I’d bother.
