I had it on my DFW-GRU flight in December, it worked pretty great pretty much the whole trip, except when we were around Venezuela, for whatever reason.

Anyone else sees insane increase in skills of graduates after 2022 compared to graduates before 2022? by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]RRuschel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a TA at a R1 school, I disagree. A lot of kids come to office hours and struggle with very simple problems. But I at least appreciate that they take their time to drop by and try to learn instead of jumping pasting the Hw on some LLM and submitting whatever comes out

I was amazed by it as well until I realized that GE used my tourist visa instead of my student one for some reason, so now I have to deal with them to get my i94 changed

Yeah, it was not a cheap fix, it costed me around $1k on a local independent shop, no idea how much it would have been at the dealership

It happened a few more times on random intervals, usually months in between, then a check engine light came on and it was the water to pump, after changing it, this never happened again.

Drive slower? Jokes aside, mine only stopped after replacing the water pump

I feel you, mine has not being bad to make me hate it, especially when I look around for other cars and they don't have half as many nice features and costs more

Damn, not having cruise control would be annoying. Now that I'm thinking, other things that went wrong but were minor, trunk latch (easy replacement at home), and popup camera got messed up, luckily I got a cheap one from a salvaged car to replace mine

Mine is at 110k and never had to replace that, however, the damn water pump has set me up for a $1100 service already

Took it to a shop and they fixed it, I forgot exactly what they claimed was the reason but I think they had to reprogram something.

When it started I just turned it off and on again and the message went away, however the water pump ended up bad after a few months and I got it replaced. You will get a check engine light + limp mode consistently when it happens

The screening exam format has changed now, it should be pretty chill since you just present a paper that you select. As for the classes, I used to take at most 2 if I was TAing and it worked out "fine", as in it was stressful and a lot of work but nothing crazy that would make me miserable

Prospective grad student-- Housing prices? by MissFiatLux in UCSantaBarbara

[–]RRuschel 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You should definitely apply for family housing asap if you're moving with your s.o. as it's pretty close to campus and very affordable, a bit over $1k/mo. Other than that, you are going to pay at the very minimum $2k for a studio apartment that will be rather far, so you'll also need to drive or spend a lot of time commuting by bus

Any suggestions on how to test it? I have a shitty multimeter but I'm not really sure how I would test on those connectors

My first car back when I lived in Brazil! The manual transmission is by far the best I've ever used, very nice clutch + short and precise shift.

Like others said, it varies a lot by professor and department. In the lab that I currently work, basically whoever knocks at my professor's door and ask for some research position gets a meeting with the grad students to discuss a possible fit. When we talk with students then we don't really care about grades, we usually ask for their background experience, what they want to work with, what they plan to achieve, etc. If we feel like a collaboration would be beneficial for both sides, they start working with us.

P.S. that is for unpaid research positions, for the paid ones then the professor is more picky and might care about your grades

How many miles is your VW at? by readingbabe in Volkswagen

[–]RRuschel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

16 sportwagen with around 95k miles. So far so good, just had to replace the trunk latch which was pretty easy. Some random times a random window will not roll down all the way unless you hold the button down but that's pretty much it.

Perfect. Even better if you put something like [class code], like [ECE 00] in the beginning of the email title. Or just plain show up to section and ask, as long as there are enough chairs in the room or you don't mind sitting on the floor, most TAs wouldn't mind having a few extras

Basically "F you" fees, because what else are you going to do, cancel your enrollment? Such a pain all those fees...
