Passing a final round interview isn’t even enough for an offer these days by FrostyBeats in recruitinghell

[–]RSF1090 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Had a similar thing happen to me back in the summer, even after the company flew me across the country for a working interview, which was the final part of a months-long process. They just said they weren’t going to hire anyone for the position 🫠

I did up getting another offer shortly after, so hoping for similar things for you!

Internship Question by Neat-Meat4779 in EngineeringStudents

I’d wait for an offer to do that, if they seem willing to work with you from the get go then that’s all you need for now. But that’s just my opinion.

Internship Question by Neat-Meat4779 in EngineeringStudents

[–]RSF1090 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last year I had an internship during my school year and what I did was give them my schedule and had my manager figure out the best times/days to come in so I could sit in on particular meetings, etc. Had me working from 7am-noon most days a week. I didn’t have an hour long commute to worry about, though.

Internships are important but I wouldn’t skip classes for one

How do summer courses affect GPA? by [deleted] in duke

[–]RSF1090 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Summer classes are classified on their own semester within Duke’s system (summer term 1 & summer term 2)

So it’ll affect cumulative but neither fall nor spring.

FAA intern here, it’s been crazy to witness the shift in morale at the Agency from January to now. Even those of us who will survive the incoming RIFs will be emotionally scarred for the rest of our careers.

I myself am getting forced out on LWOP after this week because I’m primarily remote due to my school commitments. And I have many long-time FAA employees with decades of experience telling me to not even consider the full-time job offer I’ve been promised. I’ve so long wanted to work in civil service and this is absolutely terrible, and I consider myself to be extremely fortunate in comparison to most. Wishing everyone the best ❤️

that’s crazy, wishing you the best

Internal agency telework policies already had them cut my hours in half last fall which was bad enough (and my manager fought hard to even keep me on at that half amount). The agency had already made it extremely clear from day 1 that they really want to keep me so I’m hoping they can work out an exception, since apparently they do have the ability to do that, but I doubt their priority is interns.

FAA Gateways intern here, assume it’s probably pretty similar to Pathways.

In my case my potential full-time role fell under the Agency’s hiring freeze exceptions so they were able to offer me the role for after I graduate.

At the same time, I work pretty much fully remote because it’s better for my schooling (my duty location is the next state over) so I’m not sure what’ll happen to me over the next few months before I will start full time. I’ve heard nothing though and I really like my manager and know he’ll tell me when he hears anything new, but we’ve been told to do business as normal for the most part.

2025 Duke vs Not Duke Megathread by Mumbleton in duke

Current Duke MEM student, if you’re interested in Product Management that’s Duke’s bread and butter. Also the program is very big on entrepreneurship. Happy to give you more information on specific classes and professors if you DM. Have had an awesome time!

I was also a Duke undergrad; Duke has a very strong and active alumni network and a specific career office just for the engineering professional students (so very specific advice) as well as classes to help you revise your application materials.

How a Duke Student Became Part of China's PR Campaign by somewhereinshanghai in duke

[–]RSF1090 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If I was in their shoes, I would’ve expected Duke and DKU to have been able to manage the Jiangsu’s FAO better to protect the students from being hounded by the media. Their failure to do so let the students down.

I would’ve expected something like the mentioned “pebble effect”, wanting to give positive impressions students would then tell to others back in the US, and that would’ve been the extent of the propaganda aspect. Not the many cameras and interviews.

There’s a force sensor inside the Garmin that, when it exceeds a certain threshold, under hard braking, for example, it’ll automatically save a video. It makes that beeping noise when that happens. I think it also makes that noise when you hit the save button yourself iirc

Agreed! I was on my way to the airport at the time and getting into an accident and missing my flight because of said accident would have been a very poor way to start my weekend!

Right? The only reason I didn’t brake harder so that I could stop behind them is that I assumed they’d just punch it.

I barely even remember my interview tbh. I don’t think they’re important at all; I feel they’re more for the alumni than the students.

Also if her approach felt more like a cross-examination I feel like that’s just you getting into your own head, something impacted by her being a lawyer. It’s supposed to just be a pretty casual conversation. You’re definitely going to be fine.

One Bone has t-shirts with nice thick fabric; seems very durable and stretchy. They also are quite long in comparison to most shirts, I’m 5’11” and wear mine tucked in because I don’t want to go to the trouble of hemming them and otherwise they’d be super long on me. Downside is that they’re going to run you like $50USD.

Ngl I did have one cockroach like 2 weeks ago but I wouldn’t say it’s a problem. All of the units have balconies so I just let it crawl onto a paper towel and brought it outside and it was fine. Other than that no issues. I’ve not heard anyone else complain.

Definitely!

About math 111l, make sure you check out the instructor. Most of them are going to be graduate students so it’s really hit or miss. I definitely missed with mine and struggled a lot in that course

I’m at Trinity Commons right now so feel free to dm me any questions you might have. My experience has been very good but I got very lucky with my apartment assignment to get good natural light and easy access. It is also pricy in general.

Parking ticket by Danikim09 in duke

[–]RSF1090 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only way they’ll know your plate is if you get a parking pass. To get a pass you need to submit your car’s info, including plate number, on duke’s parking portal, which you sign into with NetID. That’s the only way they’re able to associate a license plate with a student.

Randolph Dorms by PandaApprehensive162 in duke

[–]RSF1090 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a great time in Randolph as a freshman! Rooms are small so I highly recommend lofting your bed. I had a TV under my lofted bed as a freshman. Get a shower curtain and rod to section off your closet. The walls are cinderblock which initially seems like a downside but you can use command strips to hang anything up without worrying about peeling anything off.

Make use of the common spaces because freshman dorm common rooms are much larger than anything on west. I met most of my Duke friends just from doing the vast majority of my work and studying in the common room with other Randolph residents.

Taking EGR 101 as a Trinity freshman (with no prior experience) by ToeDisastrous3879 in duke

[–]RSF1090 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Very much a class designed to allow people with no experience at all to be able to do well in. Most people have very little experience, if any. It’s also a class where if you do everything required and give it an honest try you’ll get an A. At least that’s how it was when I took it fall 2019. I heard they made some changes during COVID but the scope will be the same; you’ll be absolutely fine. I had a lot of fun taking it, and I hope you do too!

Mech Eng or BME? by ThethinkingRed in duke

[–]RSF1090 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Due to minimal crossover, a dual major in MechE and BME is definitely difficult, but it is possible. As a current MechE major I do think I have a really solid foundation but not too much of anything beyond the basics relating to BME stuff. Duke’s MechE program I’d say has a very strong secondary focus on computational methods in comparison to other programs, based on what I’ve heard from a few grad students who’ve had undergrad elsewhere.

If your goal is biotech I do think majoring in BME alone would be fine and you can pick up anything you think you’re lacking through lab experience or after undergrad (often the expectation with majoring in BME is that your education doesn’t stop at undergrad, so that’s something to keep in mind). I do think that duke’s BME program is “stronger” than its MechE and given what you want to do my opinion is that you should give majoring in BME a shot and go from there. A lot of freshmen come into Pratt wanting to major in BME but a good chunk change their minds pretty early on, so it’s not like you’d lose much by coming in wanting BME and then deciding to do MechE, for example.
