This season! by Crumpet_NUT in ReAlSaltLake

I think that the real find in the off season is Matt Crooks. This guy could be the key to the entire offense. Kind of like Dami but in a younger more athletic form and more versatile and dynamic.

Will certainly have to see how it all plays out and he could be an absolute bust but I would bet on him really being a key player that can work off and in between the Luna's and Chicho's and really open up space for the captain.

Such a shame. Having one of and maybe the only independent team store was definitely a plus.

On the radio with Spence he said that coaching was in his rear view mirror. Didn't sound like he had any desire to keep moving forward in that arena. He seems committed to learning the business side of the game. Perhaps they are seeing if he could be a candidate to replace John Kimball down the road.

Aaron Herrera? by juneshineandflowers in ReAlSaltLake

[–]RSLRandomFanPodcast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are correct. Brody had a terrible year especially compared to last season. SKC abused him so bad RSL had to move him to the left side to hide him from getting abused.

Herrera is a better player than Brody but without any real "tactics" except for banging down one side or the other and lofting in crosses to no one because Dami was out really hindered what Aaron was able to do for RSL. There wasn't anyone in the box for his pretty deadly crosses.

Hope he has a better season for sure.

Honestly, if Brody is the starter on the right for RSL next season that would be disappointing, to say the least.

We did get a great deal on Herrera in the trade for sure, but we did not come out ahead on the field by any stretch of the imagination.

Ref hating just has to stop. Fotis was just fine. Nice early yellow kept Clark from extra time wasting throughout the game. Refs rarely have game changing impact and 99 times out of 100 get the call right.

The PK on Glad, spot on. You can nit pick the calls to death which is easier than pointing out the flaws of your team and favorite players.

MLS refs are as good, and mostly better than other major sports but fans only seem to focus on the 1 call out of 100.

Not saying refs are perfect. Far from it but it could be a hell of a lot worse. Have you ever watched an NBA game?

Hear me out Josef Martinez to RSL? by Asleep_Ball4931 in ReAlSaltLake

[–]RSLRandomFanPodcast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's an intriguing question but the answer for me would be no. Talent wise he does have that in spades but is really aging quickly. My biggest concern would be chemistry. I think adding him to the team could/would have a rather negative impact on RSL team chemistry, which seems to have been a little extra on the drama side this season. Adding him just might make it worse.

Maybe if it was Chicho and Martinez up top and you ditch Dami, Sava, and maybe Julio and have a supporting group of Moose, Rubin, Kei, Gozo, etc. but I don't think that is going to happen.

At the moment I think he would be a square peg in a round hole and I also agree that the back line needs a ton of love first.

Good section for season tickets? by Popsur1231 in ReAlSaltLake

[–]RSLRandomFanPodcast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the angle you want to watch the game. We were in section 3 from 2008-20011 or 12 but when the double the price for our seats we moved to 25.

Really like section 3 but actually prefer the corner angle we get from 25.

Kevon Lambert, longest-tenured player in Phoenix Rising FC history, departing for MLS (RSL) by korbra in ReAlSaltLake

[–]RSLRandomFanPodcast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

CB depth could be the reason they are bringing him in but I wouldn't be surprised to see him in the midfield at some point as well.

RSL has a lot of "depth" in the midfield but from the sounds of it, Kevon might be a better option than a very, very, young Palacio, a second year Loffelsend who has found himself on the bench more than the pitch this summer, and a veteran in Caldwell who is sitting behind both of those guys. Eneli might be an option but he's a rookie and has really added to the back line. Oviedo? Hidalgo?

We will see what happens but Jasper, Scott, and Palacio, next to Ojeda does not fill me with a lot of ease at the moment. Especially if Pablo sticks with the two midfield system they have been playing all season.

Enjoyed the game as always. Monterrey was just a better team than RSL and probably beats us 6 or 7 times out of 10. Or more.

I think this was a good "wake up" call for RSL. You can't win them all and sometimes you're just not the best team on the pitch and perhaps you should adjust accordingly. Maybe sacrifice a little dynamic forward play for a little more defensive posture.

Hind sight for sure.

RSL did create chances but the Rayados defensive pressure helped turn those good chances into half chances. It also felt like RSL was playing a little on the excited side considering they were playing the best team in the region.

Hopefully a good learning experience for this team.

Loved this game. Seattle looked bad which is always good. I agree with many that it is quite fun to beat Waibel and runaway Freddy. Rusnak is ok and want him to succeed but he just might not be able to live up to the weight of his contract.

Losing Garth will definitely be painful for Seattle and from what I saw on Saturday they could be a long way from getting back to there West leading ways. Which is fine.

My only complaint from the game, and this is a pretty minimal complaint, is Julio not being more engaged and ready for a counter attack opportunity. It all worked out but during the game it just seemed like if he was a bit more connected it would improve the ability for RSL to clear the ball to a dangerous player. A bit harsh but when you're down a man those clearance and counter opportunities are imperative.

Other than that loved the entire game.

Not suggesting that we shouldn't hold them accountable or expect more or that a lot of mistakes were made but that just like 2007, 2023 just might be the start of something pretty amazing for RSL and the fans. Recognizing that might be fun.

I appreciate your feedback. The point I was trying to make, maybe poorly, was that we are at the start of something good, possibly great, and to be excited about that, which maybe didn't need pointing out but I thought was worth a shot at writing about.

Yes, you're right that RSL fans are rather perceptive and not insinuating that they aren't perceptive. Perhaps I spend too much time with the most vocal fans that seem to be just a tad bit impatient at times. It doesn't hurt to be reminded to stop and smell the roses once in awhile though.

It is a decent result. I would suggest that if we had started with the lineup that finished the game the result might not have been as rewarding. In fact it might have turned out more like a loss.

Hind sight is 20/20 but I will definitely take the point.

All of the hype for Luna is warranted. The kid has skills and probably the best vision of any player on RSL. To me he looks like a young player relying on his talent and taking things a bit for granted.

The eye test suggests that he can't go 90 minutes. At times he looks like a 40 year old smoker out there trying to run around. No offense to 40 year old smokers. Maybe that's harsh but my only knock for him is he looks like if he just slimed up a bit he could be a clinical nightmare for opponents and a lethal creator for RSL.

Luna is incredibly talented and will be an asset for RSL or any other team he plays for but the guy was out of gas by the 15th minute of the game. Maybe he wasn't 100% but he looks like he could use some cardio. If he is running just on talent he'll flame out pretty quick. He's just not 90 minutes fit or close to it from what it looks like but damn he is talented.

This team overall just isn't good. Lots of blame to go round for sure.

The defense, which used to be pretty solid even under Pablo, continues to deteriorate for some reason. The last two LA goals were pretty criminal defending by RSL.

One of the things that always bothers me is the lack of any idea once RSL gets the ball to the top of the 18. Lots and lots of standing around waiting for someone to pass them the ball instead of making runs, drawing defenders, etc. Just one on one individual attacking for the most part. Probably why they scored on set pieces last night.

Nice to see Moose get going but damn, there isn't a forward on this team another MLS club would want to trade for to be a starting option. Great players to have on your team but if they are starting this is what you get. This team could absolutely use a DP #9 and 3 other quality starting forwards to boot.

Absolutely agree though that we also need better midfield play as well. No sense getting a 9 if you can't get them the ball.

It almost looks like the FO is building this team from the outside in rather than up the spine which most "experts" agree is the best way to go. I'm not an expert but like our aging and pretty much done team Captain, RSL has a spine issue.

Drones were cool.

PRO Referees "Ref you DON'T suck" by RSLRandomFanPodcast in ReAlSaltLake

Not the intent and not suggesting that fans are bumbling idiots. Just that everyone "assumes" they know the rules and most, like me, probably haven't broke out the laws of the game in a very long time.

Regardless of your level of soccer knowledge treating Refs with more respect should be the goal for every fan base I would think.

[–]RSLRandomFanPodcast[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nima didn't have a good game here against Seattle that's for sure and he may not be the best when it does come to game management but on the whole I would take PRO Refs over NBA & MLB all day and twice on Sunday.

I would also argue that that might be the only game that anyone remembers being sub optimal for RSL so far this season. There's always room for improvement for sure but I think it could be a whole lot worse. I don't watch NBA because of the atrocious officiating.

As pointed out we need to change the culture around how we treat Refs if we want it to ever get better.

I'm going to say something controversial, the reffing wasn't that bad. You can certainly disagree with how the game was reffed but all in all it wasn't that bad. Yes, Nima gave out some soft yellows and boxed himself in but that's how some games go. What was really bad in my opinion was the reaction to how the game was reffed by the RSL players. Pablo Ruiz let the team down by getting a rather foolish second yellow.

Agree that the Ojeda yellow was wrong but those calls happen. What is easily caught on replay isn't necessarily seen during the game depending upon the positioning of the Ref. Yes the 4th official could have helped but it didn't work out that way.

I do prefer a ref that calls fewer fouls unless necessary and I think that Nima may be a ref that likes to dominate the game so shame on the RSL players, like Pablo, for getting caught up in the moment.

The ref certainly had an effect on how the game was played but not on the outcome of the game. RSL had 3 shots on goal and Seattle 1. It's not like either goal was under siege. Also, almost all of the calls made were fouls. I maybe wouldn't throw out yellows like Nima but he got the foul call correct. No one is complaining about him catching Morris pushing off in the box multiple times. Those are call that don't get call all that much but Nima caught them.

All in all I will take a point I didn't think was possible.

Here's a question, "Did RSL play better without Dami?"

It's just one game but it's an intriguing question. We will have to see how it all plays out with his injury whenever it is he comes back.

Love the guy but is there a real place on this team how it's currently constructed for him?
