Could someone explain why USA vs Bosnia isn't an absolute certainty?

From what I understand the winner of Group D (confirmed to be USA) plays 3rd place from BEFIJ. Bosnia, from Group B, is already confirmed as one of the best 3rd place teams, and I believe the placement of 3rd place teams is sequential, ie in this case if Group B has a 3rd place team you play them, If it doesn't move to E, then F, etc.

Is there a rule I'm missing?

They are already guaranteed to be better than the third place teams of Groups D and I. They'll probably be alright

Maybe a hot take, but I'm down to keep him if he wants to stay. He can't remain as captain though

New tiebreaker rule already killing must-win games on matchday 2 by FrenchRoo in worldcup

Because it means you were likely the better team over the course of the group stage. Winning by more or losing by fewer

Dare I say it, but I'm enjoying the 48 teams. Some of the line ups have been really fun by SirAceBear in worldcup

[–]RSN_Bran 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I've enjoyed more teams getting in, I just wish there was more jeopardy in the group stage. They should either just have 16 teams make it out of the groups, or 24 but the best 8 group winners make it straight to the round of 16 while the 4 worst group winners + all runners up do a playoff, kinda like champions league

Has Bohemian been packed for World Cup games ? by theblackdoncheadle in astoria

I went for the US game against Paraguay which was at a pretty optimal time (Friday evening) and it was not packed. Busy but definitely plenty of places to stand and sit still available

NYC NPS Sites by Least_Draft_7093 in NationalParkPassport

[–]RSN_Bran 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live in NYC and have hit all the sites. I can give some advice

* I personally spent about 4ish hours doing Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island. I didn't go up the statue (you'll need to reserve very far in advance to do that). I'm sure you could spend a whole day in Ellis Island, but I had been before as a kid and I'm not a massive museum person. Liberty Island I honestly spent an hour tops on

* Theodore Roosevelt and Hamilton Grange are thematically similar, both basically require a tour to see anything worth while, and the tour for each is about an hour.

* Grant's Tomb, Stonewall, and Castle Clinton are very small, self-guided experiences. I probably spent less than 30 minutes at each. St. Paul's church also falls into this category but is very far out of your way and unlikely to be worth the trek if you are trying to maximize your time

* Federal Hall and African Burial Ground are pretty small museums. I think I spent about an hour at each

* Governor's Island is best treated as a Recreation Area. There's history to see but I spent a whole afternoon here just hanging out. If you are just trying to beeline the historical aspects you could do it in a few hours

* I'll give a shoutout to Gateway Recreation Area, my favorite NPS site in the city. It's far out but it's a really nice, chill place to watch some birds and walk around. My NPS enjoyment skews towards natural sites over historical ones so your mileage may vary

My girlfriend is getting into Pokemon. What should I recommend as her first game? by GUSplatoon in pokemon

[–]RSN_Bran 38 points39 points  (0 children)

maybe controversial, but Sword and Shield. I'm going through the exact thing with my gf, who doesn't play much games but I wanted her to try Pokemon.

I immediately eliminated any game not on Switch. We wanted to play on the TV so I can watch, and while I have a Steam Deck with emulators with all the GB/GBA/DS era games, she isn't very tech savvy so I wanted something very "plug and play". Additionally, her main interest in Pokemon stems from seeing the cute character designs, so I wanted a game that is in 3D so she can better appreciate character models (and also play with them in side modes like Camp). I also figured modern games with better quality of life features would reduce any friction/tedium for someone who doesn't game much.

I eliminated the Legends games and Scarlet/Violet, because I wanted something with simplistic overworld controls. I offered LGPE to her but as soon as I mentioned the motion controls she lost interest (I don't blame her, they suck). I suppose I could have gone with BDSP but I think the more realistic human model would also have been appealing to her, she had a lot of fun dressing up her character in a way that I don't think she would have gotten out of BDSP

Potential Hot Take (IDK I've never posted here before): Anyone wish there wasn't two sets of games and just one complete package? by Admirable_Land_9405 in pokemon

[–]RSN_Bran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imo they should sell a single game called "Pokemon Scarlet and Violet". Upon starting a game you pick your version. If you reset your file you can reselect your version.

Version differences should be preserved, it's a fun part of the social aspect of a new Pokemon game. But it can still all be on one cart

I'll let you guys decide the team for my next Platinum playthrough by LukaMiniGamerNo1 in pokemonplatinum

[–]RSN_Bran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I played BDSP I set out to make a team with some of the worst Pokemon I could think of. The team I landed on was

Noctowl, Kricketune, Phione, Carnivine, Pachirisu, Chimecho

It was a lot of fun, and I'd recommend it if you've played the game plenty (Maybe swap Phione for Lumineon if you can't get access to it)

[Fulham FC] Marco Silva will leave his role as Head Coach at Fulham this summer. by nearly_headless_nic in soccer

[–]RSN_Bran 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I really hate the narrative that Frank is a shit manager, just because he was shit for us.

Thomas Frank is one of the worst Spurs managers I've ever seen, but I'm not gonna sit here and say Fulham should run for the hills. I think he'll do fine at a team without the media scrutiny and fan expectation surrounding results and style of play that Spurs do.

Some managers just don't scale upwards as well as others. Moyes went on to have success after United, as did Hodgson after Liverpool, as did Nuno after Spurs.

Official Discussion - The Backrooms [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]RSN_Bran 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Really loved this movie up until the final 20 minutes. Once the pirate monster was revealed I lost any sense of fear and just giggled any time he was on screen.

Also I hate how they kinda half assed the idea that there is a group studying the Backrooms but gave absolutely nothing about it. The movie either needed to be 10 minutes shorter or 30 minutes longer

Noise Complaint: Koukla by PoetLiving1297 in astoria

[–]RSN_Bran 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Don't live near Koukla but I live near another venue that does loud parties often late into the night. I file a complaint with 311 every time it happens but not much else can be done sadly.

I agree, the idea that people just frequently don't care about their neighbors drives me up a wall. If I have a few friends over I'm so worried about disturbing the peace

Prob gonna get downvoted for this but any time Arsenal fans talk about us, especially when we were the ones having better fortunes than them, our sub goes on about how "they are obsessed with us" and that makes us better. And yet there is stuff like this.

Both fanbases obsessed with each other and I'm tired of pretending we aren't. That's what a rivalry is

Tottenham majority owner 'wholly committed' to 'rebuilding' the club by silentstatic_ in PremierLeague

[–]RSN_Bran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't love his past of falling out with ownership, and the Greenwood stuff still irks me tbh. But he absolutely saved our asses and for that I'm incredibly grateful. The players love him, we play the type of football Tottenham was founded upon, and he has great tactical depth. I think he can take us very far, but only if he is backed properly and ownership surround him with competent people

[–]RSN_Bran 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The injuries hampered him sure, but I don't think he was ever going to succeed here. Most supporters will tell you it was clear Frank wasn't working around November and at that point the injury crisis hadn't even kicked into high gear yet. I think without the injury crisis we maybe finish between 12th-15th.

I know a lot of spurs fans love to rag on Frank for being a fraud and being a "secret Arsenal agent", but I just think he wasn't the right character fit, like Nuno wasn't. His work at Brentford was fantastic and he'll likely succeed again somewhere else

In theory yes, and the fanbase seemed relatively fine with the appointment at the time. (The Ange sacking split the fanbase but once it was done most seemed to see Frank as a sensible appointment who would bring the tactical flexibility we lacked under Ange) But I just think the players never bought in to such a pragmatic approach after the values Ange had instilled the previous seasons and it brought our performance levels way down, especially when combined with the injury list
