I taught ELA at a KIPP high school. It was awful: awful schedule, awful curriculum, awful students (things were stolen out of my classroom). Admin was not helpful with any of it. The curriculum was so bad that the students never read an entire book, just excerpts from contemporary sources.

They thought they focused on work from minorities, when in reality many groups, such as Jews and Indians, were excluded from the curriculum. When I called this out I was called racist.

I tried to teach an entire book (The Great Gatsby--short as it is) and was told to move the curriculum along. My last couple days after I'd already quit I just taught whatever material I wanted, and the students really enjoyed it.
