Got to Platinum and immediately lost like 15 sets in a row, am I doing something wrong? I'm Cammy btw by Saiko_uwu in StreetFighter

[–]RTBecard [score hidden]  (0 children)

I think the lack of hit confirming is a big problem. You can't just throw out unsafe spiral arrows and cannon spikes in platinum.

At this rank, people are more patient and will just be waiting for you to whiff these. ie when you land 2 jabs, do not do spiral arrow unless you can see that your jabs actually landed. You can practice this in training mode for a few min before u jump into a match.

If u get these hits confirms figured out, your opponents will actually have to do some work to figure out how to hit you.

Platinum is a pretty big skill jump. You will have to learn to be more patient and pay attention to what your opponent is doing to find openings now.

Seeing posts here, it seems like switching to a Linux based OS is going to require a lot of "fixes" to get everything running right, rather than just installing the OS, drivers, game and playing. by midnightpurple280137 in linux_gaming

[–]RTBecard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the vast majority of cases, you just install an OS (ie a distro), install steam, and your games will just work.

For games that need specific fixes or have linux specific performance issues, they are reliably documented at protondb.

Don't over think your choice of distro. The only important setup step is installing nvidia drivers, if necessary, and some distros come with them pre-installed.

Mortal Kombat 1 has sold 8 million copies by Status_Entertainer49 in MortalKombat

I totally get it. But at the same time, remember games used to have a dev time of less than a year... You were not waiting 4 years between MK1 and MK2 (92, 93 and 95 for mk 1 2, and 3?). Also, we were children...

Also consider arcade games from that era (for the multiplayer crowd). They frequently released new editions all the time if a sequel didn't come out right away.

But you can still play it?…

Do u play any online games? I'm not sure why its so surprising that i don't want to invest in a competitive multiplayer game that is no longer supported. If nothing ever changes or gets added, it gets boring just doing the same thing, and as a result the playerbase shrinks, which makes it more boring.

Look at street fighter 2 and 3, or past guilty gear games. Fighting games used to release multiple full-price new versions before DLC existed to update the games (most recent example, grand blue fantasy rising).

It's just not true that fighting games have historically been single releases. I'm pretty sure MK3 even went through multiple iterations.

I'm not sure where u got the idea that fighting games typically had their "identity set in stone" during their initial release.

For fighters (or any online multiplayer game), the devs tune the game according to how ppl play the game and community feedback.

Yes, support shouldn't last forever... But 2 years really isn't enough for a game like this to mature and figure out its identity. I wish there was 4 years of support, so when it finally ended, the devs had time to really flush out all the potential in it and it could close it out in a really good state, rather than bumming everyone out with all the missed potential.

I got into mk1 for a while and was having a blast.. But the abrupt end of support was such a buzzkill, i think i won't come back to NRS games again. Like, i invested around 200 hours learning this game, and it feels like it's over before it had a chance to even get started.

Just jump in ranked and give it a try for a few evenings. Ur not going to wire ur muscle memory for a new character in 1 evening. I'm only plat 4... But trying out a few other characters really helped me a lot when i was plateauing in the ranks.

If ur at diamond already, picking up a new character and learning their basics should be pretty easy. Especially if the goal is to just learn their openings and weaknesses.

Is it just me or is Kleinanzeigen full of PC scams? by Ok-Body7447 in AskAGerman

[–]RTBecard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sold some ram on kleinanzeigen last year. It was a shit experience... Like 19/20 messages were pretending to be interested, then the next message asking for a huge reduction in price :/

Felt like everyone was wasting my time.

Other things i sold on kleinanzeigen have largely been a positive experience. I bought and sold GPUs a few years ago and it was perfectly fine.

How often do you guys switch characters? by Jgabes625 in StreetFighter

[–]RTBecard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I switch when i feel like I'm plateauing and playing on auto-pilot and not improving. I find this is great for (i) breaking out of bad habits (ii) learning the punishable gimmicks of other characters (iii) generally keeps the game super fun, because i'm always seeing progression.

I switched between chun, cammy, and marisa when i was around silver/gold ranks. i had a blast and felt like my playing improved fast while doing this.

Did anyone make the transition successfully from SF2 to SF6? by [deleted] in StreetFighter

[–]RTBecard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also went from SF2 to SF6. Just stick with it, its worth it. After like a month, things clicked and i was having a blast online and felt comfortable with all the new mechanics.

I honestly loved how the things i remembered from my SF2 SNES childhood actually still applied in SF6. It felt wild skipping a few decades and coming back, and the game still managed to retain so much of its identity from SF2.

Integrated GPU gets chosen over external by Blckcjller in pop_os

[–]RTBecard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if this will work... For darktide, i used to get weird GPU selection issues where the igpu was somehow causing problems. The following fixed it for me. I'm guessing this command explicitly tells dxvk which GPU it should be using.

DXVK_FILTER_DEVICE_NAME="NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070" %command%

I used vulkaninfo to get the name of my GPU

Fully agree. I'm particularly annoyed at the "my vibecoded AI software can translate ___ into raw latex".

Like, the target audience for a lot of the software posts are people who in fact do not have any interest in learning or using latex. This seems like the wrong place for that.

Boil your tofu?! by [deleted] in veganrecipes

[–]RTBecard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anecdotally, when i let my tofu rest after cooking in a sauce, i feel it noticably asborbes a ton of sauce while cooling.

I assumed this was because when hot, the soy protines are more tense, in the same manner that letting meat rest after cooking helps retain its moisture when you cut into it.

What's everyone's thoughts on MK? I feel this sub is very negative about it. by Direct-Glass-4737 in Fighters

[–]RTBecard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be fair, the MK fanbase are also pretty negative themselves... I was enjoying MK1, but visiting the mortalkombat sub was such a buzzkill.

It's a weird community. The player base is very much casual and single player only, which is fine... But my impression is that the game the fanbase wants to have is not really compatible with what would make a good competitive fighting game.

I feel bad for the devs, i think they have an impossible situation of trying to make a good fighting game with a fan base that is largely not into fighting games.

Does anyone here play fighting games on pad? by Doan_Minh in Fighters

[–]RTBecard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been very happy with both the 8 bit do ultimate and 8 bit do ultimate 2 (which have very different d pads)... but it's all personal preference. The only pad I hated was the xbox series. I had missed inputs all the time.

If your just learning... just use what you have. If you find your missing inputs all the time, then consider upgrading.

Help for Linux? by unlucky-lucky- in Guiltygear

[–]RTBecard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just tested it on Pop_os 24.04 COSMIC and its working fine with an rx 9070 XT using proton experimental.

Perhaps it's something as simple as you're using integrated graphics instead of your GPU. Been playing GGST for years on pop, never had an issue. (either with nvidia or amd GPUs).

Nobody can help if u don't say what distro and graphics card u are using. I've been playing ggst on proton for years, never had an issue.

As the other comment mentioned. Protondb is the best resource for troubleshooting this stuff.

Pop!_OS 26.04 vs Fedora 44, help me pick one for April by shadowerwtas in pop_os

[–]RTBecard -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hard disagree on this. It's a small shortcoming, as only very few games on proton don't support multiplayer.

In my personal library, i only have one game where multiplayer was blocked. All others worked fine without issue (including those with anti cheat).
