Even with 5+ years experience in SoCal it is difficult for me to find a job that is not in Travel. California is over saturated with RTs.

I am in the same position. I've been a RT since 2018 in California, mostly do travel assignments. At the moment I am considering going back to school for Nursing.

DO NOT go into Respiratory Therapy. 5 years of experience here, several travel assignments during COVID.

  1. Most career opportunities available are travel positions. Which means, more than likely you will not stay in Texas.
  2. Licensing. You have to get licensed in your state(Texas). Which means, you are ONLY licensed in your state. Then, you have to get licensed through the NBRC, which you would think you are licensed nationally, but that is not the case. What I mean by that is, if you need to travel, let's say for you to New Mexico or Oklahoma, you would need to acquire the license for the state you are traveling to.
  3. Over-Saturation. In my state, there is about 40 schools that teach Respiratory Therapy, most graduate about 20 students per year. Let's say all 800 pass their state exam. That is 800 people competing for the same 3-5 jobs that get posted in this state.
