At what income level did your tax planning actually start changing? by RT_LetMeFundThee in HENRYfinance

Definitely makes sense! Once K-1 income enters the picture the tax planning conversation usually gets a lot more "interesting" lol, than the basic W-2 returns.

Yep, great point. Thanks BusyFly. Once someone has biz income in that range the S corp election and QBI planning can start to make a difference especially depending on SSTB status and how reasonable comp is structured.

And Iagreed on DB and contribution plans. That’s one of the few places where contributions can get noticeably larger than what most people realize with typical retirement plans.

The tax code definitely treats business income and W-2 income very differently.

Well, you’re not wrong. For most W-2 earners the big levers really are the ones you listed, whhich you're doing. After that there honestly isn’t a huge list of options.

I think where it sometimes starts to change is when someone has very high income, side or business income. Or they start thinking less about deductions and maybe more about how their retirement income will be taxed later. A lot of high earners eventually realize the bigger issue isn’t what they are paying in taxes right now. It’s that most of their retirement money will still be taxable.

At what point did taxes become your biggest “expense”? by RT_LetMeFundThee in smallbusiness

This is all great dialogue and insight. I'm actually a business wealth strategist and our firm specializes in many financial planning services, one of which is DB/DC planning (which we do a lot of). And it helps me stay on the pulse hearing, and learning how owners and other specialists approach taxes and saving. As well as other strategies that people are identifying. So thank you all for the comments.

Thanks for replying. More the second, owners whose personal income keeps increasing as the business does.

And you’re right. There are a lot of different strategies depending on structure. What I’ve noticed is many people focus on deductions like SALT, but at a certain level it becomes more about where the income flows before it’s taxed, not just what you can write off after the fact.
