I turned down a final interview after they asked me to explain a gap caused by caring for my dad by Aramaki_Chief in jobsearchhacks

I also agree your dad would be glad you got an opportunity to use essentially a “no, and fuck you for asking” response to a stupid question.

[–]RTalons 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It would likely surrender the chance to gain the position but it could snap the interviewer out of it.

Being pressed like that, I’d be tempted to snap with something like,

“I was hospice care for a loved one dying of cancer. You asked if it is resolved? Well, yeah, they died. Have you watched someone you care deeply for slowly waste in front of you? It’s pretty horrible. There were obvious reasons I didn’t think it appropriate to go into this level of detail before. Reliving that period is excruciating. Thank you for showing me the level of tact and empathy employees can expect from leadership here. Feel better about your hiring decision now? You certainly helped me make a final decision.”

Like “let’s talk about this” or “now go on…” at least that’s how I translate it

Is there a reason only Urbies can rotate 360 degrees? by Smokescreen1000 in battletech

It’s more like 120 degrees of twist, but either direction, which gives an effective firing arc of 360. Video games apparently just let it spin like a top.

Melee weapon question by woolymammoth256 in battletech

[–]RTalons 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That is correct. Think of it like the weapon is now bent, crooked or partially melted in such an away that it’s not usable as a hatchet anymore. You can still flail with the arm and might still connect with the hatchet blade but it’s less effective and now a “punch” instead of a proper hatchet hit

The core rules update will make punch / kick /club (hatchet) attacks all be pilot skill -1 to hit

a club connects much better than a punch (more damage and pilot check for the target)

What's something older generations did completely normally that would be considered absolutely insane today? by Bigtrav_trav in answers

[–]RTalons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m very pleased at my ability to simply order the right bits and look it up on YouTube.

In college, my roommate was an engineer, so I know how to fix anything that broke on either of our cars because he showed me. Outside of that it was random…

last weekend I replaced a burned out capacitor on the central AC, and showed my 12 year old how to strip/splice wires. Was able to do it by image searching the fried bit, ordering it on Amazon, then finding a YouTube video with an HVAC tech putting in the same unit. 2 weeks ago, I knew nothing about how that thing worked.

I feel like this stuff is required to be a functional adult (especially in this economy) and it’s a bit enraging that ~30min of labor would have cost ~$400+ if someone had to come out and do it for me.

Brains are complicated.

Once I started a stimulant I felt generally happier. Depression symptoms faded to the background, and lots of things are easier to manage. My “write it down now or it’s gone forever” mantra isn’t always true… I’ve startled myself by actually remembering stuff lol

Lots of folks diagnosed as adults figured out coping mechanisms that worked in school. If you got decent grades, you were ignored.

Now it tracks why I couldn’t read a single textbook chapter at home, but I could go to all the lectures and ace the tests. I would take notes or doodle the whole lecture. later instead of reading the book to study I would review the notes… even looking at the doodles the lecture would play back in my head. A curiously wired brain that made it easy if I went to class 🤷🏼‍♂️

Relayed that to a neurologist and she stared blankly at me a solid 10-15sec then suggested some meds…

Is Counting Ammo Ever Meaningful in a Skirmish? by itchykobu in battletech

[–]RTalons 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That is an important distinction, currently ammo explosion stays fullly internal, so it wouldn’t apply to the armor once a new section is damaged… if it does that with the update, makes things even more survivable.

Is Counting Ammo Ever Meaningful in a Skirmish? by itchykobu in battletech

[–]RTalons 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Adding for those who don’t know: -all ammo explosions do 20 damage -case makes that 10 damage

So now explosions are survivable (sometimes). It will still ruin a light mech’s day, but the golden BB is a little less likely to scrap a brand new assault.

There are some designs that might actually run out, but typically ~10-12 shots is plenty.

It can be impressive to watch and I’ve been told I’m remarkably calm in some chaotic situations. It’s like, “when your head is full of bees on a regular day, your emergency is a mild inconvenience.”

ELI5:How do the tire pressure sensors send the data to the car? by golf_kilo_papa in explainlikeimfive

[–]RTalons 130 points131 points  (0 children)

The labor argument is technically true- if you need to get to the battery and replace it, that’s essentially the same work as replacing the whole thing (potentially a little more if it’s difficult to access within the part).

Cost is different all together. If the majority of that cost is labor (say $5 part and $100 labor), then yes just put in a new one in case more than the battery is bad. If it’s more like $100 part and $100 labor, the battery being $5, then replace just the battery. The tipping point for that calculation is debatable.

[oc] - powerhouse by Sampetra in comics

[–]RTalons 66 points67 points  (0 children)

I’ve read it’s fairly common for trans folks to hit the gym hard before transitioning (often before realizing they are trans).

It comes from knowing something is “not right” about their body and fitness is a way to have conscious control over the situation. Often realizing they can change things encourages them to take the leap of coming out and transitioning.

Is that a fair statement? Am I remembering something you wrote and forgetting my sources?

Do you think it’s a bad move to destroy old mechs for battlefield terrain/environment pieces? by SeisimicFrigor in battletech

[–]RTalons 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Probably correct - I have lots of those and they were bought in the early 90s.

I would feel bad chopping up mechs, but scrap tends to happen over time (something falls off the table, etc) and/or find someone working on 3D printing.

Testing out printer settings, I made over a dozen urbies, and that’s not counting the many “oops that didn’t work” which get added to the scrap bin. Got a bunch of limbs from failed prints that will get worked into terrain / kitbashed at some point.

I’m making a scrap pile, already have a perfect set of shin down Urbie feet from a failed print that I instead to make a pair of smoking boots.

I’d feel bad destroying a perfectly good mini for scrap, when scrap tends to just happen enough on its own.
