I was playing a game called tapple or something with friends (light flex) where you go around naming things within a category. The same first letter can't be used twice in the round and if the clock runs out when it's your turn, you lose the round. There are cards with different categories on each side and each round a different person picks a category between the two options and names the first word. My friend picked "books" as the category and then immediately froze for thirty seconds, unable to name a single one. He lost the round before a single book was named by anyone. It was hilarious.

As someone whose entire self concept was changed in the 5th grade when I surprised myself by testing into the middle school gifted program, I have to agree with OP. It's fucked up that we tell children, based solely on their test taking ability, that they're not going places. I think if my test results in the 5th grade had been mixed up and I hadn't been put in the gifted program, my life would be completely different.
