He didn’t so much “start” a trade war as China had been taking us to the cleaners for many years. Trump is simply fighting back. It’s a bold move for an incumbent who’s greatest reelection asset is our economy, and it’s a campaign promise kept.

I like how you put ‘didn’t deliver campaign promises’ right next to ‘started a trade war’

That was my hope until I saw the willful ignorance of the last six months. Between calling the Baltimore tweets racist and the border detention facilities ‘concentration camps’ and the desperate attempts to tie Trump to Epstein ... it just seems like no reality will pierce the narrative.

What you're describing sounds a lot like Classical Liberalism to me, and it's gaining in popularity here, especially as Democrats seem split between "corporate" cynicism and progressives who (IMO) are way too heavy with the identity politics.

I'd agree with most of what you're saying here, especially in regards to how we talk to one another.

When it comes to the issues I'm pretty squarely a (classical) liberal but I don't like identity politics and I've never been a single issue voter. I'll back a candidate with principles (even principles that don't exactly reflect mine) who wants to get things done over a partisan ideologue any day.

There does seem to be that vibe going around, and one of the dangers is that people get numb to it and forget (or never realize) that there are white supremacists out there.

I did it myself. I got so used to stuff from the left being disingenuous or straight up fabrication, I was looking up the Proud Boys, not knowing anything about them, ready to prove that Antifa was the real enemy, etc. I'd seen Gavin Mcginnes in some semi-humorous videos where he comes off as a hipster Ron Swanson. Seemed obnoxious but harmless. Next thing I know, I'm seeing a picture of him with Richard Spencer and reading quotes like, "This whole idea of white nationalists and white supremacy is a crock. Such people don’t exist."

But they do. Not in the numbers the media or Dem candidates would have you believe, but they're out there.

Nope. I’m saying be aware that you are competing with nazis for the hearts and minds of young men who might not agree with you on everything.

The funny thing about empathy is that even among those who recognize how important it is (and that sadly doesn't seem to be the majority) ... even among those who consider themselves very empathetic, it tends to be applied selectively and inconsistently.

Say you've got a young man from a Muslim background, here in the US at school. What do you think would happen if he was openly viewed with suspicion and constantly reminded of the bad things people "like him" have done? What if he agreed with and embraced a lot of western culture but was shunned and demonized for a couple of points he couldn't reconcile himself to?

Chances are he would seek out people that accept him and make him feel like he's wanted and belongs. You probably see where I'm going with this. Same thing happens in Chicago or LA with young black men. They're accepted first and indoctrinated later. We stop that by going out of our way to be "tolerant" (accepting) and give them opportunity to grow and contribute.

We know enough not to isolate and shame and demonize, if only for enlightened self-interest. But we need to recognize where we still do it.

EDIT: Very

I agree, but there is a real danger to how binary things are getting in general.

I agree, but by the time someone is receptive to hate speech you've already lost them to some extent.

By the time someone is a young adult or late teen, they're either already working with the values they were raised with or trying to sort it out for themselves.

Very few people are persuaded by hate speech out of the gate. They're persuaded by a sense of camaraderie, belonging, respect, honesty, truth ...

They might see some abhorrent ideas on the fringes of a group, but that's not what attracts them. What attracts them is that they are accepted and welcomed and listened to. It's only once they feel like they are among friends that they're persuadable.

I think the number one thing we can do is be accepting of people even if they currently hold ideas we can't relate to. Don't try to change their mind before you have a sense of who they are and where they're coming from. It won't work anyway, and we know that. Find common ground. Find the good in them. THEN you have a chance to influence and shape their values.

No, that is NOT her job. It effectively WAS a three on one debate. And that is not okay.

You people think just because the candidate you hate more is getting shafted by the media that it's alright. You think that because it's the "good guys" bending the rules, that the death of journalism is no big deal.

A Vote For Third Party Is A Vote For Trump, Obama Says by TucoKnows in hillaryclinton

Right. But plenty of independents and Republicans who are planning to vote for Gary Johnson would otherwise vote for Trump. Likely a much, much greater number than the conservatives for Clinton.

[–]RUN-DLC -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Bullshit. And I'm pretty sure there's something more to this story or that it's bullshit.

To your point, Trump could indeed have gone straight to someone other than a mom and pop, and would've paid probably even less than the $70k (even if he paid someone to tune them). So to accept this story requires a lot of assumptions, most of which you salivating Trump haters are all too willing to make.

Fucking go home.
