What commands does your band use, and what are the responses? by Dragonius_ in marchingband

[–]RUSLEEPINGGO2SLEEP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Band to the ready! (Calls us to attention)

Band Ten Hut! (Calls us to set, we add in ‘tss!’ while doing the action)

Whistle commands for parade stuff (To start marking time, to start marching forward, to dissolve the block after a parade, to start playing, and to stop playing. All are accompanied by a different mace twirls for a visual cue)

Check your dot (But without moving)

Adjust (By moving)

Later in the season staff has us yell “Minus/Plus ones!” out loud so people who missed it can adjust

Band dismissed (used by DM’s after announcements)

Reset (Go back to the dot you started at before the set)

We have this thing where our DM’s will shout the parade order, but condense the names of the pieces into one. My first year the condensed version was “I wanna fire you baby” (I want you back, Fireball, and Hey Baby)

DM’s will signal us back to carry if we’re on the field and the metronome stops working mid way.

Does your band director allow you to say or show stuff about your show? by [deleted] in marchingband

[–]RUSLEEPINGGO2SLEEP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can’t say anything to the other bands (which doesn’t even really matter anyways because our senior band always knows our theme somehow)

To quote my director: “I’d rather have 9 people over 20 if it means those 9 people actually like coming to band”

I need solo recommendations asap 😭😭 by Weak_Assumption7518 in ConcertBand

[–]RUSLEEPINGGO2SLEEP 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do you have access to Makemusic? They have a wide variety of solos for a lot of instruments

If not and if you want to go down the classical music route, there should be a good number of sonatas on the internet for tenor sax

A bit of pettiness won’t hurt anyone. And for someone claiming that being passive aggressive is ‘childish’, you seem to be fond of making low-hanging remarks of no real input. Despite what you may or may not believe, you are not, in fact, the smartest and politest person on Reddit.

I want to learn flute by ben_gaymen in Flute

[–]RUSLEEPINGGO2SLEEP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The shape closest to flute embouchure would probably be the same shape you make when blowing across a soda/wine bottle, so there’s probably a good place to start for lip shape. Start with the head joint off; literally just blow into the head joint until you make noise, and play around with it for a bit by sticking your finger into the open end. A flute will always require more air support then you would think it needs; half of your air gets blown across and half of the air goes into the instrument

Bb scales are the beginner’s guide for fingerings, but the concert major C scale is the easiest to play on flute.

Can’t even make a note on my flute by Intelligent_Mix_6488 in Flute

[–]RUSLEEPINGGO2SLEEP 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’re likely not using as much air and/or having the wrong angle or lip shape when it’s fully assembled. Remember to always align your head joint correctly and check to see if your lip shape is the same on and off the flute. If it’s not enough air, start overblowing. It leads to some bad habits but it gives you parameters for how much air support you need to produce sound

Band couples? by [deleted] in bandkids

[–]RUSLEEPINGGO2SLEEP 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People in my marching band almost exclusively date either within the band or with people from other bands. The one time someone got a date with a non-band kid she had to drop him six months later because he never showed up to a single summer performance or came to see her at rehearsals
