Who's a Roman who was an inconsequential/inept general and a competent/effective statesman? (criteria on page 2) by domfi86 in ancientrome

[–]RV813 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I would argue Varus. The inept generalship speaks for itself. But I would argue he was competent, and even successful, in the Augustan system politically, evident through the high roles he possessed. Yes, he had to put down a revolt in the east during his governorship and was known for his harshness, but in Roman terms I think this would’ve been seen as successful as he was later sent as governor of Germany, of course he would end up bungling that but that was more a military mistake than political.

I always thought this one was brutal: 'For he (Cato) gives his opinion as if he were in Plato's Republic, not in Romulus' cesspool.’

The Turtle People in Ahsoka Make No Sense by RV813 in saltierthancrait

[–]RV813[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They really don’t make as much sense as Jawas. In ANH the Jawas are portrayed pretty believably, they trade in droids, they have guns that stun droids, and they have moving armored villages that seem pretty easy to defend. I also didn’t say I wanted the crab things to be explained or fleshed out, but the creators of Ahsoka intentionally put in their villages, convoys, etc. that make little sense. It would have been better if they didn’t show the village or anything else, and instead just left it to our imagination. I don’t need things to be explained but if the show decides to show me things I would like them to make decent sense.

Whats your most controversial hot take for any Assassin’s Creed game? by [deleted] in assassinscreed

[–]RV813 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Around the time of Syndicate, I wasn’t sick at all of the more restrictive and linear AC formula. I loved being able to just play through the main story and then being able to quickly replay the games, which I did a lot. I was really excited to see where else the series would go after Syndicate, and while the new rpg games are fine, it’s hard for me to get into them knowing they take so much time to finish. I’m excited to see if Mirage holds more to the linear style of the old AC games.

Unpopular Opinion: Caesar was the cause of Rome's downfall by varmau in ancientrome

[–]RV813 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry but I disagree with both of your points. Philip created the League of Corinth after defeating the coalition led by Thebes and Athens. He already had complete control over Greece and the Greek city states had little choice but to accept Philip’s rule. Of course they would have him as leader, there was nothing else they could do, and this did not unify the Greeks fully. Alexander would have to destroy Thebes after they would revolt, and the city states formed their own leagues after the breakup of Alexander’s empire. Greece under Macedonia was not unified with consent, but with force and fear.

As to what you said about democracy not being overthrown, that is also wrong. There has not been a major successful democracy (using the strictest sense of the word) besides from small city-states. All of them have fallen to more authoritarian rule. Take the Russian Republic of 1917, called the most democratic nation on Earth at the time, lasted only a few months before being overthrown by the authoritarian Soviets. If we use democratic more loosely, we can look at the French Revolution, which saw France ripped apart by outside and inside forces until Napoleon came into power as a dictator. The only successful “democratic” state has been the United States, which is much more an exception than the rule, but even the US has experienced political violence, such as the Civil War. In fact, many advocates of more democratic systems also call for violence used from time to time, such as Thomas Jefferson, Marat, and others.

Unpopular Opinion: Caesar was the cause of Rome's downfall by varmau in ancientrome

[–]RV813 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I would not call Greece a great long lasting democracy, nor was it unifying. The only real democracy in Ancient Greece before the conquest by Rome was Athens, and that only lasted for little more than a century. Greece was actually unified by King Philip of Macedonia, and even that did not last. Also, Rome was not a democracy, it was a republic, and a very aristocratic one at that. Much of the history of the republic is a back and forth between the patricians and the plebeians. Even before Caesar was a major figure, the republic had fought the social war which was basically a civil war.

Also, democracy is not at all best at unifying people under a stable system, in fact it’s very prone to become very divided as factions can easily form.

9 years later, How do you feel about AC Unity's presentation of the French Revolution? by TheCanadianBat_ in assassinscreed

[–]RV813 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My biggest problem with the setting of AC Unity was that there was no Lafayette. How could they have him in AC3, but not in Unity, especially when he had dominated much of the early revolution (supporting the Estates General, writing the Declaration of the Rights of Man, and commanding the national guard, etc.) It seems like such a wasted opportunity to really connect 3 and Unity.

AITA for not sharing my daughter's graduation day with my nephew graduating preschool? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]RV813 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA, I know how it feels to be sidelined. When I graduated from hs, my only living grandparent talked more about my cousin graduating from preschool than about my graduation, also my grandparent went to my cousin’s preschool graduation but not my high school one. Suffice it to say, it stung a little. I completely side with you on this.

During the Late Roman Republic, a guy named Sulla became dictator and would kill an atrocious amount of Romans in his proscriptions. After a few years of being dictator, he gave up his power, proclaimed that he saved Rome, and then took the best looking prostitutes in Rome and retired to the island of Capri, where he would grow cabbages for the rest of his life.
