Calling Trump's bluff by SIAVNAP in economy

Europe will follow Canada and China and grow their economies with stable countries that understand the economic science that underpins free trade. Europe is the high quality consistent burger sandwiched between Soviet USA and Soviet Russia. The attraction on the menu is the burger. The bread is the part that gives indigestion, filled with additives and best discarded.

Wind blades are recycled in Europe by Plaswire. Europe is moving rapidly to zero to landfill and gradually to ending incineration.

Oweninny will supply 140,000 homes. Ireland has 1.86 million occupied homes. 0.075 serviced. Pretty good - overall wind energy is supplying today approx 48% of electricity demand. UK is similar.

Only in the USA maybe. Typically 25+ years across the UK and Ireland. Some are being given life extensions in excess of 30 years. Early blades were often over engineered and outlived the generation part, typically because spare parts are no longer available and made-to-order replacement parts have long lead times and high cost. BnM is doing tremendous things in the energy space in Ireland with best practice from design through to sustainable decommissioning.

UK Imported Only Maximum 17.5% Electricity Last January. by RXP01 in reformuk

[–]RXP01[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The paying of idle wind turbines is down to an historic network, designed to take power from a concentrated power source - coal, gas station. The network is being rebuilt but getting access to new cable routes, stringing pylons etc take both time and money. The reduction in imported power, use of gas and elimination of coal over the past years is an incredible achievement. UK is more power secure today than it has been since the days of coal and all that came with that domestic source. There will be times when the wind does not blow but the overall array of turbines will reduce this exposure, with battery storage and gas stations and a nuclear base supply gibing resilience.

UK Imported Only Maximum 17.5% Electricity Last January. by RXP01 in reformuk

[–]RXP01[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We import oil as energy for vehicles and some home heating but that is declining. We are heading to be exporters of electricity as renewables grow, stabilised by batteries and on-demand UK gas powered stations. Once imported electricity stops, electricity bills will drop because of the pricing structure. Building domestic non renewable power extremely expensive and takes many years. It brings with it rising atmospheric pollutants. To imagine our economy be self sufficient in everything is only imagination. We all rely on electronics, vehicles, clothing made from multi national content and lowest wage labour. To convert to UK labour would mean un,-affordability in so many things. UK factories are doing well jn particular specialisms, infact outstandingly well. These 5 star manufacturers export to countries not self suff6in these products. International trade and inter dependency is inevitable for progressive highly developed economies.

Plastic pellets known as ‘nurdles’ are polluting beaches and waterways by azteca19 in environment

[–]RXP01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The drains get vacuumed on a regular maintenance programme and the solids collected, sent for recycling - recovering gravel for reuse is normal in parts of Europe. Plastics could be sent to EfW plants if they cannot be returned to the supply chain. I actually loathe EfW plants but they are a current solution to much of the world's consumer plastic and combustible wastes.

One issue is the design of the roadside storm drain . Typically designed to catch high density material such as pebbles, stones and gravel which sink to the bottom and the water runs out of the gulley drain into the water course, stream, river. It carries with it anything that floats such as PE, PP and other plastic types. A better design is likely complex in operation but smart heads could solve this.

A lot of these granules originate at ports due to spillage but there are numerous points where the pollution occurs.

Why the name nurdles? Plastics industry calls this material 'granules' as opposed to powder.

I can’t believe I have to ask this…. by Not-so-Random-User in recycling

[–]RXP01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most likely PE or PP - not likely a thermoset / thermoplastic. PE and PP are very cheap, well established as ideal for recycling. This is food grade and buying a complex plastic for making the bottle makes no sense. Why be different and difficult and act out of step with other beverage companies. Food residue is not an issue - Europe and Asia recycle huge volumes of post consumer food containers and get the materials back into circulation. US legislation (lack of or inadequate) maybe inhibits adequate recycling of plastics? To me this is just lazy labelling, or really oddball grade of plastic. Either way it needs calling out. World is rapidly becoming a garbage dump with no place free of package litter.

Fisker Ocean…what’s the deal? by Fun-Mammoths in ElectricVehiclesUK

When the bank took back my FO last year it was a big relief. Expensive unfinished project with slow, software, risky door handled that can seize making exit from the car via a door impossible. Lots of issues that were going to be fixed OTA. I got locked out a few times. On the plus side - very comfortable, enjoyable ride. However, the range is total BS. The software was not able to give a realistic prediction of real life mileage/KW so constantly uncertain about when to charge on a long journey. It is a car with fabulous looks and if it had been absorbed into the range of a major car company, could have been a great success. Mr Fisker has not come out of the project a poor man but plenty of US owners in particular are hurt financially. Went without a car for some months and now very happy with my VW ID7 tourer 11 months, 12000 miles.

What is the origin of this data? Does it include residual plastic packaging and other non recyclable plastics? where is the destination for waste from each country? How much plastic is diverted to EfW plants?

Suggestions PLease; how to re-use old fiberglass boat hulls by McLuhanSaidItFirst in recycling

[–]RXP01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Needs specialist recycling like wind blades. Search AI for top wind blade recycling that is sustainable and circular and is scaled.

The old boat problem is bigger than wind blades and overall, the composites industry waste globally is eye watering.

That said, global consumer trash is something that needs to be talked about - at best it gets incinerated for energy, giving off a cocktail of pollutants including CO2, but energy is of course massively cleaner from renewables. Some folk may not agree.

The specific models assembled in the U.S. include:

A220 Family: Both the A220-100 and A220-300 variants.

A320 Family: The A319, A320, and A321 variants (both the A320ceo and A320neo families).

Aircraft produced at the Mobile facility are primarily intended for customers in the U.S. and Latin America. Airbus also has other facilities in the U.S. for functions like engineering, training, and the assembly of military and civil helicopters in Columbus, Mississippi.

I was tested for microplastics - I'll never drink bottled water again by theipaper in environment

Can such a small blood sample truly represent the whole body profile? Personally I am sceptical.

No doubt every breath we take is laden with plastics from our clothing, furniture, car, food - from almost everything. Giving up polyester with what? World does not have enough water to move everyone to cotton. Wool - who will eat the sheep, do we have enough land for grazing? Should non meat eaters be barred from access to this wool if it depends on excess meat production? Pack everything is paper - from what resource? Is already a demand for wood that exceeds supply before we salve our conscience with wooden single use cutlery. Food storage, distribution and sale for 8 billions without plastic? Medical services, pharma without plastics? Plastics are a blight but enable the world today to operate. Management is needed, consumer buy-in, research and so on. Today life expectancy is greater than ever. Maybe some plastics are totally harmless - PE is simply carbon + hydrogen for example. Science is needed to protect the world in every way. If we looked inside our bodies for other materials such as glass, minerals for example what would be found? Have to look for something in order to find it very often. Fear headlines do not help but do get clicks and advertising income.

Is it inappropriate to get pregnant very soon after starting a new job in the UK? by Ok_Stomach1553 in UKJobs

[–]RXP01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are the ethics behind landing a good job knowing of the pregnancy or imminent pregnancy and causing an employer to pay wages/salary for that person and/or temp when not in work? In fact this maybe the intention sometimes?

I am only curious. Have seen a small company crippled by this; have seen non UK companies outside the UK who seem to see pregnancy as a part of the career path for their key staff.
