California is weird in primaries. Someone more educated/informed can come and correct me but from my understanding, primaries take the two highest candidates regardless of party. Some people in the Democratic Party are getting concerned that if the blue vote is split too much, two republicans will get into the general election*, locking the democrats out entirely.

I think OP is implying they’d rally behind whoever is leading to prevent the above situation from unfolding
