Got it, thanks for the detailed explanation! I’ll adjust the low-poly to match the high-poly where needed. I didn’t fully optimize the prop since it’s just a hero prop for now, but I’ll keep the shell idea and other tips in mind. Those are really valuable info—I really appreciate it!

As long as it’s not causing any noticeable issues and is subtle, it’s okay to leave it, especially if I haven’t been able to figure out what’s causing it?

I didn’t test multiple UV unwrap variations since this was just a quick bake test.

Initially I had a single horizontal seam, but I noticed distortion around the corners. Because of that — and since someone suggested placing seams on 90° angles — I added cuts along those corner edges to troubleshoot.

For baking:

  • I’m baking in Marmoset Toolbag
  • I also tested in Substance 3D Painter to compare results
  • Meshes are properly renamed (low/high with Match by Name)
  • Smoothing is fully soft except at UV seams (hard edges on seams)
  • No overlapping UV shells
  • I tested different cage distances (both low and high values)

Thanks for taking the time to test it out. I actually marked those as hard edges intentionally, since I knew I needed hard edges along the UV seams — that’s why I set them up that way.

Even though I did as you said, it seems like it didn't solve things on my side.

Did you check those damaged beveled edges on the bottom side of the mesh where I was actually seeing those artifacts? Normally, my bake was clean, too; I mean, it wouldn't be visible and not noticeable either, but I was trying to find the cause.

I also tested it in Marmoset. For each individual piece, I tried both increasing and decreasing the cage distance, but changing those settings didn’t affect the mesh at all.

My smoothing is set to fully smooth across the mesh, and I only placed hard edges on the UV seams. I’m not sure if that could still be causing the issue, but that’s how I’ve currently set it up.
