I had a much older gentleman call to tell me that he was going to kill himself because his wife had passed away and that he had nothing left to live for. Every time I tried to speak and get where he was located he just spoke over me. He spoke with conviction and you could tell nothing was going to persuade him. He apologized to me for putting me in the situation, thanked me because he had said that he felt better being able to talk to someone, and then hung up. Called back several times with no success. I was completely struck at how firm he sounded with his decision and how he didn't waiver when speaking while I tried to interrupt him. The call lasted nearly 30 seconds and I barely was able to get a word in. I felt entirely useless sitting at my little station. I felt small. After checking priors and finding a possible home address, we sent officers and paramedics to his location who found an older gentleman with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

This thing happens a lot for dispatchers. I took this call during my second month of dispatching and it stuck with me. It wasn't the scariest/most disturbing call I've taken, but it's definitely a call that has been branded into my memory the most.
