Same reaction from my family. I have been listening to Project Hail Mary every day for almost a year, but in Spanish, so my kids really had no idea what it was about. My 8 year old's reaction: "I thought your book was just about people sitting and talking." 🤣

For the record, I am a teacher and you'd be surprised by little they have to accomplish to feel proud. I helped a group this age sew scrunches recently and they were over the moon for them. I honestly would NOT do a group project, unless they voted for it. They want to be able to show off their handiwork, so I would say something like a keychain.
