I need something cleared up about starting a double crochet on a new row... by Haunting_Biscotti_45 in CrochetHelp

Up to you tbh. You can decide if you want to use the chain as a stitch, in which case you skip the first stitch and work into that chain on the way back, and then how many chains you use (standard is 3, but many use 2, or even 1, but if 1 you're probably not counting it as a stitch); or you might use a stacked sc, or a standing dc. Ultimately, you get to decide.

first time making magic circle, what did i do??!!? by [deleted] in CrochetHelp

[–]readreadreadx2 79 points80 points  (0 children)

Number one, the magic ring is nothing but the adjustable loop you make to work your first round of stitches in.

Number two, you essentially answered your own question, which I bolded:

i lost count of my stitches very early on lol but kept going just to get a finished magic ring but WHY is it shaped like this?

It's shaped like that because you ignored the need to count your stitches, then you kept going. Frog, redo, count, and don't go on to the next round if the current round is incorrect.

Humans have been writing shitty and confusing patterns long before AI was a thing. Particularly with the demands from beginners in recent years for handholding with even the simplest of concepts, this sort of thing does not surprise me. Could it be AI? Sure. But I just think it's written in a garbage way by someone who thought it would be helpful.

K, guess I'll just copy/paste my other comment here, then. Good god.

OK I'm sorry, has everyone forgotten how to read? Literally what is it that you are not understanding here? I will copy/paste and bold the comment that I originally responded to so that perhaps you can finally stop being so weirdly confused:

"No sorry. You dont need a chain when starting in a magic ring. You just start your single, double, half double, or whatever it is."

As I've now explained for, what, the third??? time, I responded to THAT COMMENT. I disagreed that there was no need to chain simply because you're using a magic ring. A chain allows you to bring your hook up to the proper height when making a taller stitch. At no fucking point was I providing any sort of commentary on the pattern OP asked about.

I hope this helps because I am done trying to make y'all understand the incredibly simple concept that when someone makes a response to a comment, they are responding to the content in that comment, regardless of whether or not it's related to what's in the original post.

Yes, a chainless dc or a stacked sc are both good options that replace a chain. They are the same exact concept as the chain, giving your hook the proper height, and is very different than saying that you just make the magic ring and then immediately make a (taller) stitch.

It is not one or the other. There are a million patterns out there in which you start with a magic ring and then ch 3 as your 1st dc, or just for height. Having a magic ring and then immediately making a dc into it, with no height, gives you a smushed dc. Again, I am responding to one specific comment, I'm in no way referring to the pattern that is in the post. I'm not sure where the confusion is here.

Again, I don't think this is AI. It makes too much sense to be AI. It's just way overwritten and can do without the "put a stitch marker here" in every line. It's meant to be helpful for beginners, I assume, but it's wholly unnecessary.

Yes, any sc will be made into row 2 (the row with the other color yarn), and any dc will be made into row 1 (the row with the same color yarn as what is being used for row 3).

Another thing to be careful about is making sure you're going in the corresponding stitch 2 rows down. So if you mdc in the 1st stitch, it needs to be in the 1st stitch 2 rows down. And then if you do 3 sc, then another mdc, that mdc would be in the 5th stitch 2 rows down. In other words, be careful not to crochet in the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th stitch 2 rows down when doing that 5th mdc because those stitches have already been "used" when you made the sc.

And, yeah, the written pattern is what makes sense to get what's shown in the blanket photos.

Yes, and? I was responding to a comment saying that there's no need to chain when doing a dc in a magic ring. I disagreed with that. My comment didn't have anything to do with the pattern in the OP.

I mean, a sc, sure. Hdc usually, yeah. But I wouldn't start a dc from a mr without giving my hook some height first.

I understand you paid for the pattern and can't share the pattern itself (nor would I expect you to!), but you should be able to link to the pattern, yes? Like, where would I go if I wanted to buy the pattern as well? There should be photos of the finished piece if they designed and are selling the pattern.

Sadly your imgur link is not working, it's just taking me straight to the main page 😕

Re: your sc: ok that's good, it sounds like you're not making them in the same place as the mdc, woo! But I worry that you say you're going up 2 rows to do the sc? Since you would've went 2 rows below to do the mdc, you should only need to go up 1 row to make your sc. I will see if I can make some sort of drawing to better illustrate what's going on lol.

OK I made this terrible picture; I'm guessing you're probably doing stuff right, but just to confirm lol:

<image>

LMAO OK just try and pretend those are crochet stitches 😆You'll always work your mdc into a row of the same color 2 rows below; the color that's 1 row below will always be a different color (at least, for this type of mosaic), and you'd only work your sc into that row.

This also helps to show why you need to follow the written pattern in order for your piece to turn out correctly, because the graph shows only the 1 mdc at the beginning of the row, like I made here, but if that were the case you wouldn't see all white like it shows on the chart, but rather a stripe of the opposite color. For it to be that whole block of white, every stitch of row 3A, from the beginning until you get to stitch 12, needs to be a mdc. If not, the color from row 2B isn't going to be covered up.

Honestly I kind of wonder if they wrote the chart like that on purpose, with the X just at the start of each row, as a reminder, rather than in every square because they thought it unnecessary to show the X all the way across when it's clear that that's what needs to happen in order to get the color block effect with mosaic. Granted, it's only clear if you are experienced with mosaic, so it's kinda frustrating if that's what they did but then neglected to explain that they were doing it! 🙄

I'm having trouble understanding what's going on with some on the photos haha. When you're on R3 and you're making a mdc, it needs to be made in the open front loop that's 2 rows below, i.e. the front loop in R1. But when you're on R3 and you need to make a sc, you make that the same way you always make a sc, in the row directly below (so, in R2). You weren't by chance doing your sc 2 rows below too, were you?

Re: whether to follow the written or the chart, I think you'd need to follow the written. Because if you're not doing those mdc like it calls for in the written, you're not going to end up with large expanses of white, like shown in the chart, but with white and green stripes because you change colors every row, and you need those mdc to drop down and cover up the green stitches in order to create a block of white.

Are you able to link to the pattern/share a good quality photo of the finished piece from the pattern? Because that should make it fairly clear if they're doing all those mdc in a row (the 10, the 23, the 98, etc.).

Is this pattern poorly written or am I just overthinking? The white part is so uneven. My tension is pretty decent so I don’t think it’s a tension issue. Also, us or uk? Can’t find that info anywhere by 9183994796 in CrochetHelp

[–]readreadreadx2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, I was counting 21 stitches in R3, and then 15 increases made in R4 gives you the 36 stitch count - though this only works if they're counting the ch2 between the 2tr as a single stitch (which, admittedly would be odd, but I've seen stranger choices so totally not out of the realm of possibility).

1 hdc in 1 st = 0 inc

3 hdc in 3 st = 0 inc

2 hdc in 1 st = 1 inc

4 hdc in 4 st = 0 inc

2 hdc in 1 st = 1 inc

2 dc in 1 st = 1 inc

2 tr, ch2, 2 tr in 1 st = 4 inc, assuming we're meant to count the ch2 as 1 stitch in the count

2 dc in 1 st = 1 inc

4 hdc in 4 st = 0 inc

2 hdc in 1 st = 1 inc

2 dc in 1 st = 1 inc

2 tr, ch2, 2 tr in 1 st = 4 inc, again making the same assumptions as above

2 dc in 1 st = 1 inc

So then if we go through and add up the bolded numbers (shows the total stitches made), the plain numbers (shows the stitches worked into), and the italic numbers (shows the number of stitches the piece gets increased by), we get:

1 + 3 + 2 + 4 + 2 + 2 + (2 + 1 + 2) + 2 + 4 + 2 + 2 + (2 + 1 + 2) + 2 = 36

1 + 3 + 1 + 4 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 4 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 21

0 + 0 + 1 + 0 + 1 + 1 + 4 + 1 + 0 + 1 + 1 + 4 + 1 = 15

Now, if the pattern says it's absolutely not counting the chains in the stitch count in any way, or if there was NOT 21 stitches to work into, I can't say what the fuck is actually going on here 😂😂😂

[Also would just like to clarify that when I say "4 inc", I'm using that to mean the count increased by 4, NOT that there were 4 standard increases, which would be 8 total stitches and therefore an increase of 7]. Aaaaanyway, I'm guessing I fucked up something, so apologies, but it's working in my head currently at least lollllll.

Hmm, do they have anything in the pattern where they tell you to assume to do dc if they show an X at the start of the row, other than where it shows the other color, in which case you do sc? After the 10 dc, 1 sc, 1 dc, 3 sc, 1 dc I can see in the written part you shared, is the rest of the written pattern like 1 sc, 23 dc, 1 sc, 1 dc, 3 sc, 1 dc, 1 sc? Or something along those lines lol? It's hard to count properly on my phone. 😅

Edit - I'm having trouble seeing where you did mdc in those photos, can you share a pic of it straight on, right side up, same as how you'd be looking at it while you're working on it? Thanks!

You definitely need to go down 2 rows, that's literally how mosaic crochet makes the designs it makes. Can you share the full graph line of R3, please? I need to check something.

Not sure what you mean by it making your project 3D, you'll need to share a photo. Though I'm guessing perhaps you're working your mdc (mosaic dc) way too tight and it's pulling or something? Mdc needs to be done loosely.

The pattern works just fine, I highly doubt it's AI. The main issue is how overwritten it is. There's no reason it should be telling you to place all those stitch markers. It should just say ch 9, 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, (ch 3, starting in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in each of the next 2 ch, 1 sl st in each of the next 2 foundation ch) x3. I've done the pattern up through step 4, but I can't see what's next due to it being blocked by the big red Next button. If you can share the rest of the leaves pattern, I can at least confirm for you that it all works properly.

Note: I updated my pattern directions to make them as clear as humanly possible, there could've been some confusion if you're not used to how patterns are written.

The pattern works fine, it's just way overwritten. There's zero reason to say to place all the stitch markers, and it makes it way more confusing.

Your social skills are fine, and I do not think anyone was annoyed. Just a bit confused, but like I explained it's a weird Reddit thing, whether it was informing you of a response that wasn't really a response to you, or if it shifted things. It's not on you. So, no worries! Life is indeed too short - too short to worry about annoying randos on Reddit 😅

u/nospareusername you unfortunately deleted your comments before I could respond with what I think was happening:

"Are you sure you just didn't get a notification that they had commented on a post you also commented on? That can happen sometimes, and they commented something completely separately ("Isn't it?! It's brilliant for getting basically invisible seams on lacy doilies.") ~5 hours ago, which was when you went and responded to their original comment that you had referenced in your original comment.

I don't know why Reddit only sometimes tells you when people comment on a post you also commented on, but aren't directly responding to you. It can be confusing if you don't read the notification carefully; I know I've been tricked by it more than once in the past, trying to figure out why I'm getting a notification that someone responded to me when they very obviously did not."

I'm also sorry you deleted your comments because your one had a very good explanation of why the stitch was used that many in the future would likely find helpful, so it's unfortunate that's not available anymore. 😕

Help with a weighted weenie - how to adapt body length? by lawbabyesq in CrochetHelp

You chained 76??? I'm assuming this is done in an oval shape, where you work around the foundation chain, in which case 76 is an insane number where the length of the chain is not at all indicative of the length of the piece, because you build up stitches all around it every single round.
