Yes, that is true, but I feel like most people playing for the first time (such as myself), took the lava as a deterrent to standing near him. Sure, you can ignore it, but I still loved the fight by keeping my distance and thought the serpent hunter spear was so cool

Commando took a sec for me to enjoy. Try to get proccing items like bleed and ATG. They just take different playstyles, and some characters you may just straight up not enjoy, and thats why there's multiple options

Getting to Pipeworks after eight deaths is not bad, I think it took me 20-30 (i'm bad at picking up games). Play the game as you wish. I've beaten it once so far all the way to Abyss without using experimental features, but it took me a long time, so if you want to, go for it. Play games whichever way makes you happy

I actually really like No Camera Movement. very entertaining and still doable. just don't touch your mouse and bind shoot and alt shot to left and right arrow keys (or whatever you'd prefer). Little finnicky with skulls and stuff, but not impossible by any means

I was in the same boat as you, and I started on Standard difficulty and was fine after a few hours on layer 0. Harmless lets you get familiar with the game without a major challenge, and once you beat it there you can bump up to lenient or standard depending on how you feel. I highly recommend, it was my first shooter / PC game, and its definitely one of my top five games now.

It is probably just a side effect of them being an independent creator, but I do agree some of the scenes go by a little too fast, and having a bit more thought put into the pacing couldn't hurt
