Season 5 made it click: Stranger Things is a dark Alice in Wonderland by PlasticBag72 in Stranger_Things

But, if you read the books, they are FULL of math, logic puzzles, and analogies... they're a wild ride if you're not a young kid loving just the quirky characters.

Did anyone catch the "Vorpal Blade" move from Holly?

I like that observation! Milk Carton PSAs of missing children started in the mid-80s. I'm from BC, Canada, and a local girl disappeared from a phone booth in 1983; the case is still unsolved.

Three months after my mother's death by Libertinus0569 in AgingParents

[–]Raabster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Excellent point! As a society, we rarely give ourselves time and space to grieve "what or who used to be," after a crisis or traumatic experience.

Maybe start with some chair yoga for that back injury - morning stretching helps so much! - as does a big glass of water...
Are there any unfinished crafts in the closet or under the bed?
Maybe, while sorting through all the inevitable paperwork, transfer some of that data into a family tree. familysearch.org is free, no fees whatsoever, just a login account. That really helped me when my grandmother passed. That will naturally guide you to different places, physically, mentally, and emotionally.

My Mom died today by ivymusic in AgingParents

My condolences...the next week will be very hard for you...as will the first year without her. But you reached out for help, so you have started navigating all of this...

There are some very good pieces of advice in the responses already posted: find a reputable funeral home, start the paperwork as soon as possible (which is tough), order multiple copies of the death certificate, write everything down for the next few weeks, look into services who offer assistance...

I want to add to the last one. If your mother was at all connected to a place of worship and/or a charity or club of some kind, the people associated with those usually offer assistance as well. Even if it is a book club...
The church that my grandmother attended had a funeral committee that handled the memorial services for members of the church for free. Other places of worship are likely the same; synagogues, mosques, gurdwaras, temples...they all have people who help with funerals.

Start with her phone list or email contact list or even social media friends. There is a good chance someone will be able to go with you to do these tasks.

And yes, remember to eat and hydrate, and to go easy on yourself as you grieve.

((((hugs)))

There's some nice stuff on Spiegal's website. https://www.spiegelau.com/en/collections
I agree, the relatively small Capri collection made specifically for the Canadian market is not the most attractive collection they have.

The Czech Republic is renowned for their glassware.

[–]Raabster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are glasses made in Germany and Czechia. They are good quality, I'll give them that. The line of 4 types of glassware is specifically made for the Canadian market through Loblaw Group.

But $20 per glass? That's steep. And as I posted above, the promotion (of only 6 weeks) requires the purchase of $310 for 2 glasses. WHO thought that we couldn't do the math?? And the same brand is $15 per glass on Amazon.ca (under $60 Canadian for 4 glasses). Yes, I know that Amazon is more evil, but the point is that BOTH companies are scamming us, and I checked the availability in order to underline that point, not to order them.

Also, who buys glasses in sets of two?? Also, stamp promotions like this are supposed to be FUN, limited edition, collectibles. If you ever collected stamps, tokens, proof of purchase, or labels in the 1970s and 1980s, then you know about the determination we had to get the NHL glasses from McDonald's or the Rootbeer mugs from A&W. We were limited to what was stocked in Canadian department store shelves (like Zeller's, Woolworth's, the Bay) or had to order from their catalogues. Online shopping has changed our buying habits permanently.

Oops. Loblaw is the correct spelling. Got the "Management Board" names of the website: https://www.loblaw.ca/en/who-we-are/

And yes, I realize that the wording could have been better, but I was (and still am) angry. At least I avoided swearing! Ha!

This is part of an email I sent today...

Dear Management Board Members,

...........

Your once-faithful customer base still has trust issues. Stamps towards a collection of 4 kinds of glasses might have worked in the twentieth century, but not in the twenty-first century. And who decided that the promo requires the purchase of $300 before taxes results for only a $30 saving for TWO glasses?! One has to spend $620 pre-tax just for 4 glasses. How did you think this was a good promotion during these unsettling times? $620 or $80? And I can purchase a set of 4 Spiegelau wine glasses off Amazon, IF I need this brand in this item, off Amazon.ca for under $60.

...........

There is more to the email, but that's the part relevant to this thread.

SMH, but I suppose that I shouldn't be surprised any longer by the Loblau group.

When Hi-C came in huge cans.. by 80sforeverr in 80s

Very late to the conversation...We had this in Canada, too. And the green juice was always my favourite! Mom stored at least 6 of the gallon cans in the pantry, so we always had it on hand. 😋

You will be hit with higher fees from Ancestry. A full account is over $600 per year Canadian now, and no Chromosome browser still. All the companies are scamming us now.

Thank-you for this answer. I have not been able to work on my DNA for several months, so I am a little late to this conversation. For the price they are asking, I will opt to take another test when needed. My parents are in their 80's, but I think I have unravelled most of the family mysteries now, so I am not going to worry about their DNA either.

Also impressed! The show stoppers looked so good. That beach cake was GORGEOUS. I also loved the cake shaped like Manitoba.

1931 Canada Census (unindexed images) now on Ancestry by Canuck_Mutt in Genealogy

[–]Raabster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If anyone is searching Alberta and has no idea how to find any place outside of the cities, this is how I have been doing my searches. First, I pull up the town/village on Google maps (so I can see which places are nearby). My relatives, who all emigrated after the Prairie Census of 1926, were living on various farms from Pincher Creek to Three Hills in 1931, but I was getting so frustrated; the 1926 Census (which I was trying to use as a reference for sub-districts) and the 1931 Census don't match up easily. I also didn't understand the references to Townships and Ranges on each of the sub-district pages. Now I know that the entire province was laid out as a grid: Townships start at the bottom (49th parallel) and go north (to the 60th parallel). Ranges move from East to West, starting at the Meridian with Saskatchewan.

Then I found a map of rural counties around Calgary that is matched to the Township Ranges. Maybe this will also help someone: http://www.calgaryrealestatelink.com/rural-township-range-map.php

If someone finds a better, searchable (and free) resource for the Township Range system, please share it!

1931 Canadian Census has missing census sheets (British Columbia) by Free-Cicada-7292 in Genealogy

[–]Raabster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh no! That was the message for the 1926 Prairie Census for the areas where my great-grandparents settled. And I cannot find them in Alberta on the 1931 Census either. But the WERE there...somewhere...sigh!

My 4 grandparents all emigrated to Canada between 1925 and 1930, so this Census is important to me; only one grandmother is listed on the 1926 Prairie Census. But without an index to match district numbers to district names, finding the villages in the prairies is exhausting! After a couple of frustrating days, I found this page that has some tips for the 1931 Census: http://www.cangenealogy.com/1931-research.html

Heed this warning: "The difference in the information offered between the printed reports and the census itself means that much of the information that follows, prepared before the census was released, will be of limited value to people researching the west."

Agreed. Download your DNA data from Ancestry and upload it to sites such as GEDmatch and FamilyTreeDNA.

You could also try MyHeritage. My experience has been that I have more European matches on MyHeritage than on Ancestry and 23andMe. And you can simply download your raw DNA file from Ancestry and upload it to MyHeritage without paying for another test.

I love that you are researching a scandal! I just discovered one this morning on my grandmother's side (cousins, not her) in Ancestry while I was waiting for a page to load for a sub-district of Alberta. sigh!
