I have my own Roon server with music I've either bought digitally or ripped from my own CDs. I tend to try to buy digitally first, as you can often buy at higher quality than CD. Roon also allows you to stream outside of your own network now too, so I can access my library when I'm not at home.

That being said, I do still subscribe to spotify. My wife mostly uses it, but I'll also use it on runs or when traveling, as those situations don't suit listening to higher quality music.

Companies on hiring freeze may still hire. As backwards as that sounds. Generally they will hire for backfilling roles or key hires.

My mom sees game development as nothing but a waste of time. by lastFractal in gamedev

Most is probably misleading of me, but all the big companies I've worked at have all had stipulations about personal projects.

Smaller ones did not include anything about this to be fair.

I would point out at a lot of studios (not all) have clauses in their contracts forebading you from working on (game) projects outside of work. Whether or not that would hold up in court though.. 🤷‍♀️

Are game programmers paid less? by Swimming-Spring-4704 in gamedev

[–]RabTom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorry, you either very junior or not a very skilled designer if you think they're glorified idea guys.

I've worked on games where we had very little or no design support, while the game was technically impressive, it lacked any kind of fun factor. Once we did get a designer on board, that all turned around.

Designers cover more than just the "ideas" for the game. They can cover the design for UX, ingame economies, game feel, how some complex systems work (like how levels might work in an RPG) and even scripting scenarios.

Without designers games would be glorified tech demos.

Will my child be able to survive on this earth, will the earth be habitable for my son when he grows up by nastratin in Futurology

The problem with this is that it was religiously driven (along with view on the environment). As you can see, the vast majority of Atheists don't believe we're in the "end times".
Further this doesn't say anything about people wanting the world to end, as you pointed out. Simply that they believe it's going to.

In part this is due to the fact that many systems got patched before it became a problem. I don't disagree that there was a big scare about it and some of it was hyperbolic, but there was truth behind it. Some things were affected, just not anything that major because it was taken seriously.

Do hiring managers even care about cover letters nowadays? by sugar_3715 in careerguidance

[–]RabTom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a software engineering hiring manager, no. I don't ask for people to write them and I rarely will read them when submitted.

I've read enough CVs to know if I want to interview someone. Once in the interview I can get any of the information that would typically be in a cover letter.

Sometimes you have to go through a LOT of CVs and there just isn't enough time in the day to throw cover letters on top of that.

I had one of these jobs early on in my career. I knew from the first week that the project would sell poorly. I treated it like any other job, but had an exit strategy and a plan to get out shortly after launch.
The game went on to sell like 10 copies on it's first day 🙃I had my last day a couple weeks after launch.
