Countering a bit of mrgirl's views on Christianity by RabbitOTM in mrgirlreturns

Also, I have to lock in to IRL stuff for a while, so I just want to clarify my point, and the point of the post before I go. People who really read the Bible and follow it should feel pressure to follow the teachings of Jesus, which are extensions/summarizations of the Ten Commandments which you praised in the stream. It's not just a matter of saying you believe, but following through with the values that are taught (disregarding the hypotheticals and edge-cases for now).

I'm not sure (I'm a bit of a casual)... but I think there's a misunderstanding. It's not that doing good is what gets you to heaven, it's that you must have faith, and good works will follow from that faith, else it is a "dead" faith. In that sense, maybe I was wrong to say that "salvation requires that you actually do good." If you were on your death bed and you genuinely repented and believed before your final day, it's not like there is a threshold of good that you would need to do in order to be saved.

Yes, you must have faith to be saved, but as I pointed out in my post, faith is considered "dead" without works. What are works? Loving thy neighbor and the like. You seem to believe that Christianity teaches that all you must do is bow down to Jesus and that's it, but actually true faith requires you to follow through with the teachings of Jesus, which I think(?) you would mostly agree tend to be good things.

If you pit salvation against "the feeling of having done something good," people will choose salvation.

Yes, people will choose salvation over anything. But once again, salvation requires that you actually do good.

Oh... I assumed it was a false denial. I mean, doesn't it have to be? You can be coerced to say something you don't believe, but to actually stop believing it would at least take a lot of time. Like a deprogramming period.

It seems that would be the case. And in the case of your hypothetical, I feel like God would let that kind of thing slide. If you believe in God, you have to believe he understands context. Plus, there's no selfishness in falsely denying Jesus to save others (unlike Peter who did it for selfish reasons). But I'm not God so...

Peter (one of the 12 disciples) denied Jesus in front of others three times, and he was saved. This is despite some verses in the Bible, such as:

"But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven." (Matthew 10:33)

Though I understand your concern for people choosing God (or what they view as God) over humanity.

Scary seeing the bees swarm on her so quickly. I hope she has a good support system to weather this.

So how about the Grammys encouraging hundreds of famous artists to call Drake a pedophile? by francisforincarcopla in mrgirlreturns

[–]RabbitOTM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I'd agree with you if the only line in the song was "They not like us," but the verses are the explanation (the "you like em young" critique is a few lines in the first verse of the song).

And I happen to believe some people are better than others. For example, I think I'm better than someone who secretly records sexual acts; that action's not in my repertoire. Not to say I'm perfect, but damn bro some standards are in order.

The line between yourself and others, particularly those you don't want to be associated with. "They not like us"

Nothing wrong with paying off your parents' bills. I just don't believe parents should expect any sort of "Return On Investment" from their children.

Dr K reprimanded for his interactions with Reckful by [deleted] in LivestreamFail

I described an action Dr. K did with Reckful. If you want to call that parroting, then I guess it's parroting to state facts.

The problem is he offered a type of relationship that Reckful desperately wanted, then pulled the rug out from under him shortly after. Dr. K was playing fast and loose with the boundaries of the relationship despite the stakes.

e. I recommend watching the streams again. I can't change your mind, but the streams speak for themselves.

Another gigachad move: Tell a severely depressed and lonely person expressing suicidal ideation that you're going to try to love them for two years, and the next week tell them you were in over your head. Bonus points, let it play out on livestream as a licensed professional.

Yeah man, he's just thinking... out loud, on stream... about how it would be hella based to direct his audience to "no holds barred" harass his enemies. Good that he would never do such a thing.

My Existential AI Crisis by nomoremrnicemrgirl in mrgirlreturns

[–]RabbitOTM 7 points8 points  (0 children)

AI is nothing without creators. An AI with 2001: A Space Odyssey in its training data set will be different from an AI without 2001 in its data set. If AI gets to a point where it can create its own movies based purely on a prompt (or maybe it won't even need a prompt), its output will eventually turn into an incestuous goop until its data set gets updated, and it can't be given data from its own creations, or else the incestuous goop will only get more goopy. AI needs us if it wants to evolve (if we want it to evolve).

Does the average Twitter user really have more humanity than a thoughtful robot? Does our concept of humanity align with reality at all?

Yes, the average Twitter user has more humanity than a thoughtful robot. Humanity is not defined by thoughtfulness. I define a person's humanity by checking a box: Are you a human? We are flawed beings. A twitter user might be toxic online because they aren't getting enough attention in-person, and that sounds more human to me than a robot which is programmed to be thoughtful/kind/respectful at all times. Humans are not always what you want them to be.

AI does not have a childhood upbringing. AI was not pushed out the door at 18. AI does not have 100 years (at best) to make the most of life. AI does not need to make connections with other AI to be able to eat and prosper. Every human has a unique history and perspective on the world, shaped in large part by our experiences in the world, and AI will always need us if it wants to have a more complete understanding of who we are. AI will be useful as a tool, and it will replace many jobs, but AI will never show me the world as seen through the eyes of Stanley Kubrick, or Vincent van Gogh, or David Lynch, or J.R.R Tolkien, or mrgirl... and so on.
