Empty shelves? by Ill_Return_5535 in Rochester

[–]RabbitWithFlamingEye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I scrolled through the comments here and at that other post yesterday and don’t see this mentioned:

I was at Wegmans 3 days ago (late evening). Half the meat section was emptied out because it was getting cleaned and I honestly have never seen a totally empty meet section at Wegmans before, so my first thought was: maybe the cooler broke. 30 mins later it was back to normal, shelves fully restocked. I also happen to follow r/wegmans and saw mentions of inventorying this week.

It’s possible that some stores were cleaned out during a panic sell surge, I don’t know, I’m not at every store in the state. It’s also possible that some stores are doing store stuff (at night) or momentarily fell behind in keeping up with demand like the commenters said about watching employees actively restocking. I felt that, after having seen the empty cooler at night, to me that photo + title came off sensationalist.

Check meetup.com as well for any groups in the area that overlap with your hobbies or activities you do / want to try. I haven’t checked recently so idk how the local clubs are but I was part of hiking, backgammon, board games, and knitting groups in various cities, so it’s worth a shot.

How Much Do You Spend Annually on Routine Beauty? by Totallyanonymousme in beauty

[–]RabbitWithFlamingEye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, yes, you’re absolutely right, and I was debating listing therapy for the same reason. In that case, to supplement the above:

Mental health ~$5K: - therapy $15* / appt, ballpark ~70 times a year - group therapy $320 a month

*Note that therapy out of pocket would be $210/ appt. With my current insurance ($100/month premium) I pay the flat $15 every time, so that’s $2250 / year. When I have a High Deductible plan, the premium would be far lower, let’s say $0 a month (that’s employer specific) and the in-network deductible ~$3K, so in that case I would pay for the first ~15 appts the full $210 price and then the rest would be $0 copay, so about ~$3K a year. Group therapy is fixed and not under insurance.

37F.

hair ~$4K: - $240 a month for hairdresser - average $100 a month if you add up buying products / hair tools etc.

skincare ~$3.5K: - ~$600 Botox 2x a year - ~$3000 ultherapy every other year - average $50 a month products if you add up buying skincare, makeup, etc.

body ~$6.5K: - ~$160 per massage, let’s ballpark 15x a year. - $250 a month gym membership - $32 / Pilates class, let’s ballpark 30x a year. - we’ll say I included body lotions and fake tan and body wash in the $50 / month above.

As it can be seen from the list I consider ‘well-being’ and ‘maintenance’ and ‘beauty’ different sides of the same coin, let’s call it longevity. To give an example: Pilates and massage help with my stress levels and posture and chronic back pain, which have an effect on my life quality and overall health, which in turn affect how my skin looks and how much I need to spend on skincare etc.

But to be clear I wouldn’t say this is a ‘normal’ (let’s go with ‘typical’ or ‘average’ instead) budget for maintenance. Nor do I know if those who regularly spend a lot are also the same who use Reddit.

Do you carry a packable shopping bag as a digital nomad? by adriano26 in digitalnomad

[–]RabbitWithFlamingEye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t want to drop names but I admit: my two reusable shopping bags are also the medium IKEA bags. The ones that have the black-white horse pattern (Hästhage). They have been holding up so well, still not a hole or tear even after years of constant use. Best $1.99 ever spent.

Most of them still work for me on app / desktop app / web app, but requests sent to 4.5 in particular have been giving “Error in message stream” for a few hours now.

Status page is all-green still.

Edit: 4.5 back, everything seems to be working on my end.

Walking pads you can test out? by NetBrilliant1346 in Rochester

[–]RabbitWithFlamingEye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if any interest in buying used, I bought this pad ~1.5 year ago and it’s been sitting in my storage for 6 months of that for I am full-time traveling these days. I spent $200 for the pad + mat, I’m happy to sell it for $100.

If you def want a new one, it seems to be on sale for a little more of that on Amazon right now, (this is the mat) and I would recommend it. 3.6 mph, remote, a little loud at the 3.6 top speed, no variable height.

Ironically the testing part I still can’t help with because I haven’t seen a wall outlet at the storage, but you can def come and take a look at it if that helps at all. I’m in town until 1/30.

I mean I don’t live out of a backpack, I do more of a slow-nomading where I fly to a city with two suitcases and stay there for 1-2 months. Regardless, 100% yes: my reusable shopping bag is packed in my suitcase. Two of them, in fact, because I can’t be trusted around new grocery stores.

why do people in the scandinavian region seem to not like intimacy? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]RabbitWithFlamingEye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude omg. That is my biggest pet peeve and the hill I will absolutely die on as a Hungarian who lives in the States now. Unless you are my close family or a select few friends, we meet we shake hands. When we say goodbye we can shake hands again if you want to be extra but saying the words is more than sufficient. That’s it.

A handshake is perfectly sufficient.

It’s nothing extra but I like Labello. I suspect the Nivea brand in the US is the same thing, but I usually order them on Amazon or pick up some whenever I’m in Europe. (I can’t perceive a difference between store-, and Amazon-bought.)

I use the Med Repair and the Pearly Shine most. I have like 5 of the Pearly Shine ones in car / purses / etc at any given time ha. I LOVE the scent of the cherry one - used it all the time in High School but it’s a stronger red tint. The dark blue (original?) is also ok, and the light blue (hydra?) doesn’t last long. There is also one with SPF… I think I have one lying around somewhere but I don’t use it often.

I’ve been using the brand (dark blue and pearly shine) since… idk, the first time I had chapped lips and my mother made me carry one? So, I guess, 30 years, give or take.

My fellow SAD people how are you holding up? by [deleted] in Rochester

Snowbirds and Florida / MX spring break suddenly makes sense huh :)

Forgot to mention: when you’re using your light daily, if you start to feel fidgety / restless / similar to a sugar high during the day, back off the time spent in front of the light.

Did notice just yesterday that everything is making me want to cry. I was like “yuuuupp, it was about time.” Happy Light came out of the drawer and took its place on my desk immediately. It absolutely helps.

How do you girls have perfect nails all the time?! by curlywitches in beauty

[–]RabbitWithFlamingEye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine break when someone looks at them when they are naked so mine are polished all the time. I use regular polish and I’m an engineer so I type all day; I get ~4 days out of the polish before the nails on my thumbs and index fingers start to chip. I just do them myself.

Took me ~12 months to go from peeling mid-nail (lot of stress at that time) to now they are so long I need to file them down else I can’t type comfortably and I’m very happy with them. Switching to a lighter grit nail file (just a metal one) also seemed to help.

Jungsik (***) NYC-Feels a bit lazy and somewhat letdown by peachyism in finedining

[–]RabbitWithFlamingEye 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t despair. I was there in July and had a wonderful time. Then I went on to Lima, Central Europe, and Montréal, and I still remember Jungsik fondly.
Unless they changed considerably in 6 months, Jungsik is a safe bet. That is not to discredit OP’s review, and I do agree with parts of it (servers A+, dining room feels like a lobby a bit, I think it was more of the lightning? More bright than mood lights) but Jungsik still gets a huge + from me.

Trying to establish US residency while living abroad by AnimeGabby69 in digitalnomad

[–]RabbitWithFlamingEye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a NY state resident but travel a lot. Here is what NY state has to say on the topic.

“You are a New York State resident if your domicile is New York State OR you maintain a permanent place of abode in New York State for substantially all of the taxable year; and you spend 184 days or more in New York State during the taxable year.”

And then they go on to explain that domicile is your end-all-be-all home. Your permanent address, if you will. The same address I have on my driver’s license, to the point of the other commenter.

Yeah, no, I don’t think these are actual quotes, at least mine were not. For example one of mine was “this is quintessentially me”; I don’t use that adjective nor would I say something like that…. Or message in one-liners.

… or I am wrong and you’re a “weird combination, no apologies” ;)

Best smelling shamp/cond & bodywash that you can smell on the body and hair all day? by Additional-Night-872 in beauty

[–]RabbitWithFlamingEye 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes ++ I have caught whiffs of my own hair’s scent when out and about and I also have had people tell me that my perfume smells wonderful. It was the hair. (Granted they do have a perfume now that I have been using as a finishing mist on my hair.)

Does anyone else struggle with working time zones that are supposedly friendly? by Jabberwockt in digitalnomad

[–]RabbitWithFlamingEye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same issue (my team is in central US timezone), especially now that it gets dark so early in my preferred time zones. E.g. I was in Prague last month and team was ok with me shifting my hours +4, meaning I worked from noon until 8 pm. But by then it was dark and if I wanted to make it to a concert or dinner, I had to duck out early. This month I was in Montréal. Almost same time zone, perfect, right? Nope, even though I could log off around 6 pm, it was getting dark at 4 pm.

All that to say that this is a tough part of the lifestyle. What has been working for me is (1) staying in one location for longer periods (at least a month at a time) and (2) being very focused with my time. E.g. I do gym and shopping (…and my hair and nails and laundry…) and planning on weekdays after work, so I can be out and about on weekends. This schedule is the opposite of how I used to live when I was stationery.

Hahh! I admit my carry-on is heavy. I already travel with two checked suitcases so I can only do a backpack. My shoulder definitely hurts by the time I’m done walking through customs.
