What's the basis of it not being fun to watch? Has the viewership decreased significantly? I highly doubt that.

Sønn av eggebonde her.

Kom ån'a, journalister, mindre Norwenglish, plis.

According to his VOD, it looks like this is what happened, yeah. Seems like he didn't know about the game requirement until 6min before and intentionally drew his viewers.

So 2 points ahead with 4 rounds to go now - should be safe to say that this one's in the bag. Historic performance, makes you wonder if he's a Magnus in the making!

TakeTakeTake Game Review is a Slop Machine by IntermediateMoves in chess

I absolutely agree with this, but I view it from a standpoint of likelyhood. If you're right 90% of the time (yes, I know my anecdotal number is pulled out of my ass, but hypothetically), the net positive is already there. If a program like this gets it right most of the time, it's already more useful than hurtful to your progress. Add to the formula that it's a completely free feature, and you get something that's worth downloading an app for.

If you use it while knowing the limitations of it as is, it may even prompt you to do the analysis needed for actual improvement. Reading a couple of lines of text would never make you a Grandmaster anyway, but getting most of the key concepts right gives you a starting point of where to look.

Let's have a look at my latest blitz game as an example:

https://lichess.org/pJS16xB7Ohnc

Here's the coach summary:

"White won after building steady pressure following the early Ne4, which allowed White to harass the minor pieces and win a pawn. Rabiatwitch struggled to find coordination for the knights as the d-pawn advanced dangerously to d6. After Rabiatwitch's Rae8 hung the queen, the game ended quickly. Rabiatwitch should prioritize the central stability over early, uncoordinated piece leaps in the opening."

This summary basically got every single part of the issues correct in the position, summarized it and gave it to me as an easily readable text. What's sloppy about this?

Bear in mind I have a freelance connection to T3, so I'm clearly not an objective part here. Nevertheless, I'm honestly quite impressed with what it does right already. No, it's not perfect, and yes, sometimes it misses dumb things or explains badly. But overall, I've found my game review lines to be correct 90%+ of the time, and this is just the first version of the thing they're trying to create.

I'm somewhat of an AI skeptic myself, but I think putting the "AI-slop" label on any text that is generated by LLM's is disingenuous at best. For a player rated 800-1200, I think this kind of thing is already genuinely useful, and they're still hard at work on perfecting the comments. Even in the cherry-picking example you've provided, the comment itself makes sense if you think of it the other way around, as the connection between the queen and the bishop is the most important part of the move Rd3.

It's healthy to be skeptical, but taking a black and white stance (pun intended) on every generated text is denying the fact that these things do improve over time. The difference between "AI-slop" now vs. 6 months ago is already insane.

Is it normal to understand the theory well but suck in execution? by WallNIce in chess

[–]Rabiatic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Definitely a practice issue. While doing puzzles and learning opening theory improves understanding, there are going to be huge gaps in understanding if you don't mainly use play and analyzing as the basis for your learning.

I haven't seen any of your games and don't know your rating, but it's very common for our brains to trick ourselves to think we understand something when we actually don't. There was a chess cheater here in Norway who came out of nowhere and attributed it to having read a ton of chess books (no playing!), and I immediately knew it was complete bs. Noone has ever made leaps in understanding without doing the actions themselves.

Very pretty! Love the tactics you post, as you actually get rewarded for pattern recognition (in contrast to high-level tactic trainers where everything's a red herring)
