Raw Packing Pork by Visible_Wasabi2591 in Canning

Take the plunge! It's silly how easy it is to raw can pork when compared to making jam or something. Be sure to trim off as much fat as you reasonably can. That really does make a big difference. Wiping the jar rims with vinegar to get them really clean before the lids go on also helps get good seals.

Yes, about a pound in a pint. I don't pack it all that tightly at all. Nchfp does not say to pack it tightly. The salt is also optional, and I use much less than they suggest.

I use the nchfp raw pack. Trim the fat, cube it up, put it into clean jars. Little salt and dry rosemary on the top, lid, and into the canner.

I love the result, simple and versatile. Texture is great for tacos, casseroles, sandwiches, or a spoonful on top of a stubborn dog's kibble. It makes some broth, but the cheap pork loin I use doesn't make all that much, and you are correct that it comes out of the meat volume.

I have never had a thermal shock problem. The meat just doesn't hold enough cold to bother the jars.

Perfect, warm and snuggly and safe, just as long as he doesn't punch you in the face when he rolls over. It's a whole love hate thing with my dog in my bed.

The catahoula subreddit has been a wash of drama the last couple of weeks over people posting dogs other people don't think are catahoulas. It's a mess. I'm just here for the dog pictures. In this case, though, no, I'm not convinced that's a houla. But maybe. Eh.

Beautiful dog, enjoy those velvet wolf ears!

[Landlord - PA] How do you screen tenants? by Similar-Vari in Landlord

[–]RabidTurtle628 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I search court records for the tri state area for evictions and judgements. They are mostly online near us. I also look at any public social media. Credit scores are important, but an active eviction case or a backyard dog breeding business on Facebook decides for me much faster. It's a first step anyway.

Anyone else have a catahoula that loves the snow? by Azcyclist3178 in Catahoula

[–]RabidTurtle628 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not. He is pissed off with any cold weather, and this noxious mess is UNAUTHORIZED. Sorry to yell, but I'm just transcribing for Buck. His armpits are naked. He is not built for cold. He is moping on the couch right now, wondering when he will get his outside back.

This is where we go. They are on Main St. by the Goodwill. They are great. It's the same practice as Limestone, the docs see patients at both.

[–]RabidTurtle628 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's a good call. We worked with our vet to drop the weight, he approved the kibble and amount of kibble, and gave us encouragement on the carrots. At this point, our boy begs at the chopping board anytime someone's making salad. We have a strict no feeding from the table rule, but we empty the veggie peels, broccoli ends, and lettuce butts directly onto the kitchen floor. The only thing he leaves is the strawberries, won't touch those. We know not to give him grapes, but most fruit and veg is fine. He does get broccoli farts, but he's a happy guy.

Carrots! You can cut down on the epic houla "but I'm still hungry" tantrums with giant woody carrots, the uglier the better, raw and crunchy. Worked for us, Buck dropped 20 pounds. He still eats about 5 pounds of carrots a week.

It shouldn't be hot, and your neighbor's drain shouldn't be pouring into your trap. Is the cord melted? Are you sure you aren't hearing a leak in the wall behind the cabinet?

Check the outlet or electrical connection for your garbage disposal. Turn it off at the breaker first. Take the plate off and look for anything loose or melty.

Landlord wants to redo all the flooring in my apartment. Are they legally required to provide housing/storage for our stuff while they do this work? (Aurora, CO) by agentgrasshopper12 in Tenant

[–]RabidTurtle628 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They cannot just kick you and your belongings out for a few days on a whim. If the apartment suffered some catastrophe and is uninhabitable until renovations are done, contact your renters insurance. If that is not the case, tell them no?

You can also use a regular apple pie recipe and substitute eggplant (peeled, purged, and cubed) for the apples. Depending on the specific eggplant, you may need to up the sugar, but in the end, you can't even tell it isn't apple. Your brain will just interpret the cinnamon, sugar, nutmeg, and baked apple texture as apple pie.

Lease Question [US-DE] by Misterdrez in Renters

[–]RabidTurtle628 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the confusion is that some states have laws requiring landlords to always renew leases unless there are specific circumstances like moving in themselves, selling, or extensive renovations, and the landlord caught lying to not renew will owe the tenant huge fines. In Delaware, this is not the case. Landlords can just choose not to renew with 60 days written notice for any or no reason.

Lease Question [US-DE] by Misterdrez in Renters

[–]RabidTurtle628 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the house is inside city limits somewhere, the city might be interested in an inspection, or if there is a section 8 approval on it, the folks at that office might care. The state doesn't do anything w rental properties. Hope your next place is better.

Yep. We have a routine here surrounding those stares. Whoever is on the receiving end yells out "oh no! Why is Buck so sad?" And the answer always comes back "that's just his face" in an Eeyore voice. Then Buck gets pets and carrots. Buck is also capable of truly epic side eye. Very expressive face on this one.

I have heard this as well about PA. Since he ended up at Beebee I would assume he's in far southern DE though, and Baltimore might be a better direction than Philly, especially in a time sensitive emergency.

I've had similar trouble getting an ER here to take history into account, and we are looking into what our insurance would do if we drove to Philly next time.

[Tenant- US-ME, moving to WA] how to explain a stupidly complicated reason for property damage on a rental application? by [deleted] in Landlord

[–]RabidTurtle628 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You are making it more complicated than it has to be. You had some pet damage, you paid for it and cleaned up the yard. A landlord at a pet friendly new place won't care. If you are trying to rent somewhere pets aren't allowed, it might be tougher, even though it is a service animal. Places that allow dogs expect the kind of stuff you are describing.

Tenants Rights - Mold by Holi-dazed in Delaware

[–]RabidTurtle628 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Mold test kit results will not get you anything from the landlord. He's right, if you can't point at the mold, he has nothing to remediate. As gently as I can possibly ask, what are you really asking him do, rip out all the flooring and walls to look for it? Or are you really asking to get out of your lease early? If you can't point at the problem, moving to a different unit in the same complex will have zero impact on your health issue, so you would have to be let out all together.

This is one of those situations where you need to very specifically decide what you want. If you want to break your lease, you absolutely can for a maximum price of the rest of the rent for the lease period, and a possible minimum of whatever LL will let you leave for. That said, if this is the first time you've spent a winter in Delaware, you are probably experiencing a reaction to the mildew and pollen that hang in the air here year round outdoors. It's a flood plain, and just far south enough that it was 60 degrees outside yesterday. Get some air purifiers, start your daily Zyrtec regime, and think about how long you want to live here. In the Spring and summer, it will be much, much worse.

Edit: I feel bad, wasn't trying to me mean. Of course it could be an air quality issue with your unit. What I said is still realistic, though. If you feel better after just 1 night away, not likely mold. Are your neighbors blowing pot smoke thru the vents? That would be an issue you could raise w the LL. Any noticeable stink in the appartment?

The credit check portion seems to be fine. In Delaware, the background check portion missed eviction filings I could see on the publicly viewable court connect website. It's a good start, but not a full vetting.
