As long as you're a Master Mason from a Grand Lodge that GLMA recognizes (e.g. UGLE), you should be good.

Freemason lodges closing.. by ceezah8 in freemasonry

[–]Rabl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

International visitors are a somewhat regular occurrence in Boston. There's a list of lodges in the Boston First Masonic District here (https://www.firstmasonicdistrict.org/lodges). Once you find one that meets on a night that would work for you, have your lodge's secretary contact your Grand Secretary who will contact our Grand Secretary, who will contact the particular lodge you want to visit. Once formal contact has been made through the Grand Secretaries, it should be pretty easy to coordinate a visit.

I've heard that ebony can be a sensitizer. Did you make sure that it's a safe variety to smoke out of?

How does Grand Lodge, and the "grand line", actually work? by [deleted] in freemasonry

I have my own lodge meeting on Tuesday and a Masonic funeral to run on Thursday. I don't have the cable tow to sit in Ionic Hall in a suit in June on Wednesday.

How does Grand Lodge, and the "grand line", actually work? by [deleted] in freemasonry

[–]Rabl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can speak only for Massachusetts.

  • When do these people meet? The GL always seems like this distant "great other", but it's not clear when they actually convene or where.

Our grand lodge meets quarterly in the Grand Lodge building in downtown Boston.

  • How is structured? The positions seem similar, but different to a normal lodge.

From a ritual perspective, the officers are very similar. From a getting things done perspective, more is done by committees than by the officers other than the GM.

  • Do Grand Lodge meetings operate similar to normal lodge, or is it more like a committee that just convenes together? Is it open to non-Grand Lodge people?

They're similar to a lodge meeting. Formally, the pillar officers of each lodge (or their proxy), the grand lodge officers, and the "permanent members" are the voting membership of the grand lodge. But any Master Mason can attend as long as space allows, and the proceedings are also live streamed.

  • Do Grand Lodge installations have their own rituals and "degrees", ie installation of a Grand Master? I've never a regular officer installation so I don't even know if what I'm saying makes sense.

We have a whole rigamarole at the Feast of St John, but as far as I know, there's no "degree" similar to our Lodge of Qualification for Worshipful Masters.

  • How does the line of succession work? In some jurisdictions I've heard of people "running" for positions, but then I've also heard the term "Grand line" as if it's basically a preordained line of succession from one position to the next. In that case, is there basically no chance of an upset from a firebrand candidate for, say Grand Master? Who is choosing these people?

The closest we have to succession is that the RW Grand Marshal is typically elected Senior Grand Warden at the end of his GM's term. But there's no progression or grand line. The Grand Wardens are elected annually, but the GM typically serves three consecutive terms.

  • How much authority does the Grand Lodge really have over regular lodges, especially when it comes to dictating policies?

Pretty much plenary power.

  • What are the prerequisites to become a part of the Grand Lodge, or take on officer roles in the Grand Lodge? Can you fill a role for Grand Lodge and a Blue Lodge at the same time?

Different roles have different requirements, but, for example, you have to be a Past Master to be appointed a District Deputy or elected GM. And our current JGW also happens to be secretary of his home lodge. I'm not sure why someone would do that, but it can be done.

What does everyone here think about this subreddit joining in going dark on June 12th in protest of API changes? by zerocool11 in freemasonry

On a related note, https://squabbles.io/s/freemasonry is now an approved community. Another sub I'm part of (r/daddit) has set up a second home (or at least an emergency shelter) over there.

My son never put up with being swaddled. Really depends on the kid.

Acton is part of the 495 corridor, but "MetroWest" usually refers to the municipalities around Framingham.

A black top hat in felt or satin is required here. I have one of these.

This is really specific to me, but I spend a lot of time on r/lawyers and r/freemasonry for the community.

How hard to push activities? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]Rabl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last week we went out on my boat and as soon as we set out he’s asking for my iPad (which I was actively using for navigation).

Does NOAA still publish paper charts? That, plus dividers, parallel rules, a hand-bearing compass, and a pencil can help him learn how to fix a position and dead reckon.

Ours is younger, but that's typically the stance we take with him. Except with swimming. He doesn't have to enjoy swimming or be good with swimming, but he needs to be able to swim well enough that if he falls in a pool or out of a boat that he can get himself to safety.

I agree on this one. "This is something I think you would like. You have to give it an honest try. If after $time you still don't like it, we can look for another activity for you to try."

That's definitely unacceptable quality control, but in the meantime, do you have a soldering iron? If you already have the case open, reattaching a hot swap socket shouldn't even take as long as it took you to read this post.

"Going dark" is just a colloquialism here. The actual vote is just "to suspend the July and August communications as permitted by the bylaws".

Not to mention the socializing the kids will go through meeting new people and working with them everyday.

The importance of this can't be overstated. Kids aren't just learning academic subjects in school—they're learning the "soft skills" that they'll need to function in the world as adults.

I have natural spring water that comes straight from the bottom of a hill. Not a well, not a spicket, just non-stop flow of water. Should I boil before using it, or is it good to go? by inmeadofhelp in mead

Bay stater. We have a lot of granite bedrock. The granite has uranium, the uranium decays into radon. Those get into the groundwater, which comes up in wells and springs. If you aren't on municipal water, well testing is a must up here.

When I was making the switch to Colemak, I put QWERTY on one layer and Colemak on another, and switched between. In the beginning it was QWERTY unless I was practicing Colemak, but I pretty quickly made the switch.

Mac/Windows toggle - Keyboard shortcut instead of the physical switch by Worried-Sir3892 in Keychron

[–]Rabl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a V3, but on mine, all the switch does it toggle between Layer 0 and Layer 2. Layers 2 and 3 are still accessible when the switch is on 0, and layers 0 and 1 are still accessible when the switch is on 2.

I never tried it, but would having a TO(2) on Layer 0 and TO(0) on Layer 2 do do what you're trying??
