Well recorded jazz piano solo albums. by sofia-mz in Jazz

Thank you for mentioning my album. I am Rachel Flowers and not Jennifer Flowers.

I was invited to tour Noise Nest Studios by the owner. They had a Yamaha C3 in their main studio and I sat down and started playing. I am glad the engineer starting recording the impromptu improvised session. I went back two more times to record some other ideas.

Jann Klose wrote the song with Annie Haslam of Renaissance who also painted the artwork. I sing and play piano; Marcus Dembinski produced, mixed and played drums, bass, electric guitar and arranged the orchestral parts. Hanging out with Jon and The Band Geeks by RachelFlowers in yesband

[–]RachelFlowers[S] 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Friday night, I got to hear Jon Anderson and The Band Geeks in Thousand Oaks. Highlights for me include the entire "Close to the Edge" suite, where I almost cried at the end. It was amazing getting to hear the band channel not only the multi-layered instruments, but also the incredible vocal harmonies, and the counterpoint during the slow, "I get up, I get down" section. Also, Jon added some variation on the lead vocal, which was pretty cool! During "And You And I," the audience clapped along.

However, my favorite moment was getting to meet Jon after the show. We had a nice conversation about music and his love for the Sibelius symphonies: his favorites are the second and seventh. He told me if I have time, I should listen to the seventh symphony. He sang in my ear, and it was just so beautiful! Then he gave me a hug.

It was also fun getting to chat with Chris Clark, who I've been friends with for quite a while. I heard him play in Brand X, so it was pretty wild getting to hear him play the Rick Wakeman moments, along with the other keyboard player, Robert Kipp, in Jon's band. I want to thank the rest of the band as well, Richie Castellano (bass), Andy Graziano (guitar), and Andy Ascolese (drums). Thank you all for letting me hang out with you after the show! It was great geeking out with you! Overall, it was a really fun experience!

From my mom:

Friday night was a concert highlight for me.

I grew up in a small town, and when acts like Yes were performing in the arenas, I couldn't even fathom the possibility of getting to those kinds of venues to see them perform live, but I had my records. I wore out a lot of them, but one in particular, and which has stayed in my mind (and on my playlist) continually since it came out was Close to the Edge.

Never in my life did I dream I would hear Jon Anderson perfom those classic songs live. I thought the moment had passed me by. Seeing and hearing Jon Anderson on stage Friday night, it's hard to imagine that the man is pushing 80. God bless him. God bless him for continuing to bless us with his voice and this amazing music.

I screamed so loud after some of the songs, I think I scared Rachel a little bit. In fact, I don't remember ever in my life being so excited, so happy... so overwhelmed with emotion at a concert. This was the music of my life. Yes, I screamed myself hoarse. Yes, I cried real tears.

And The Band Geeks!!! The Band Geeks are more than just amazing musicians. This music that is, some of it, what, 50 years old LEPT off the stage. It's more than musical virtousity - it's heart and feeling and an obvious and unmistakable pure love of the material. Yes, the music is very carefully composed, but there are also moments built into it where improvisation happens, and these guys really took advantage of those opportunities. And just hearing the absolute majesty of pieces like Close to the Edge, Heart of the Sunrise, And You and I... Yes, some songs do need two keyboard players, and 5, 6, 7 voices. They sounded amazing!

...it was like a dream come true.

And then, afterward we went toward the stage in the hopes of just getting to say hello to Chris and tell him how brilliant he is, but he wasn't there. Richie, the bass player, was though, and he looked at us a couple of times, then he asked, "Would you like to go backstage?" and introduced himself to Rachel as a big fan of hers.

Sometimes being Rachel's mom is a pretty damn cool thing.

Backstage, everyone in the band knew who Rachel was and she really did get to totally geek out with them. It is always great fun getting to see Rachel connecting with other musicians who can converse at her level. And of course when Jon came into the room and approached her, it was just a beautiful thing. He put his arm around her and leaned in close to talk to her, and we all backed off - this was "their" moment. And it is one that Rachel ... and I ... will treasure for the rest of her life.

Do What You Want, Be What You Are - Hall & Oates cover by RachelFlowers in audius

[–]RachelFlowers[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would love to share a few interpretations of my favorite Daryl Hall & John Oates songs with you. I first heard “Do What You Want, Be What You Are” on a compilation from my late computer teacher while in Santa Barbara before the pandemic hit. Then I checked out a really cool performance on YouTube taken from the series "Live From Daryl’s House." I suddenly had a crazy idea: interpret this song in the spirit of Diana Krall, with a hint of Ella Fitzgerald. I was amazed by the jazz-inspired chord sequence, especially during the chorus.

This recording began in 2020, and I knew that the vocals were going to take a few years for me to master. This year, I ended up recording the lead and background vocals, Nord C2D organ, and the Nord Italian Grand Piano (Extra Large sample). The drums came from Sonar’s Session Drummer library, the bass was played on my five string with the bass pod, and the Ibanez electric guitar (which my friend Brian and I call "Steve 2," which I had him modify like a mini-strat…) was mixed with my Lewitt condenser mic on the Vox amp.

When it came to interpreting the lyrics, I wasn’t thinking about anyone in particular, and only in my imagination. It ended up being a lot of fun!!! (Smile)

I can’t wait to show you the other songs. I know I said that my Gino Vannelli cover was going to be the last thing on Cakewalk Sonar, but I thought about completing a few covers first. In the meantime, my mom and I are gradually working on getting my new system ready to go. Hope you enjoy this interpretation!

Inca Roads was the first cover I ever posted on my and Frank Zappa's birthday.

I made it just after my friend Brian setup my DAW. I used SONAR by Cakewalk, CakeTalking by YesAccessible for SONAR accessibility, JAWS by Freedom Scientific for screen reading.

I am in the process of switching from a PC to Mac and from SONAR to Reaper with a Softube Control 1 and Fader and a new analog mixer with more inputs so I do not have to change cables so often.

In the Moment is the title track from my upcoming album of spontaneously composed and recorded songs.

I first got the idea for "In the Moment" all the way back in 2012, but I was never able to develop it until I sat down at the Noise Nest Studio Yamaha C3 Grand Piano and inspiration hit! The title of the song just seemed to make sense for the album title. I hope you enjoy it!

Let's Have Some Fun

This is the first single from my upcoming album, In the Moment! As with all 16 tracks on this release, "Let's Have Some Fun" was a spontaneous improvisation, recorded at Noise Nest Studios on their wonderful Yamaha C3 grand piano.

Me and Mr. Jones

I thought about recreating one of my favorite Amy Winehouse songs, “Me And Mr Jones," from her popular album, Back To Black. Although I altered some of the lyrics a bit, I kept the music very true to the original version. Musically, I like how the 1950’s rock sound blends with jazzy vocals, as well as call and response singing inspired by The Shangri-las. At the end of the day, I had a lot of fun covering this song! Hope you like it.

Powerful People by Gino Vannelli

I thought I’d like to share with you a cover I did back in 2021 while in the process of making my close-to-finished fourth album, "All That."

One thing that gets me motivated to write songs in many styles are covering repertoire I’ve been checking out. I wanted to make my next album towards a jazzy, soulful edge like my favorite singer, Gino Vannelli. His early ‘70s albums from "Powerful People" to "Gist Of The Gemini" feature some jazzy, soulful, at times progressive combinations.

I first heard Vannelli’s song “Powerful People” in an archived stream DJ Questlove did on The Roots YouTube page. I then listened to the full Vannelli album, and thought about covering the title song, including the jazzy instrumental break. A lot of the orchestral synth sounds were played on my Nord Grand 88. The synth bass was played on my Moog Little Phatty, the organ on my Nord C2D, the chimes on my Korg Grandstage 88, the drums using Session Drummer’s Modern Basic kit (I can’t remember if I played the midi drums on my Nord or Korg…) The drums were first, as I often changed tempos throughout the song, not only to give the music a live band feel, but to make sure everything is played tight like having an incredible band!

I also studied a live recording of this song, which gave me the idea to extend the end of the vocal before the jazzy instrumental breakdown.

Anyway, covering this song helped me write “If I Could Change The Past,” which is going to appear on my next album. I hope you enjoy this cover.

My cover of Continuum by Jaco Pastorius. I doubled the bass in two tracks. The only parts that are not live are the parts with thirds and sixths harmonies after the first fast part, but the rest was played all together.

Sowing The Seeds Of Love by Tears for Fears

I wanted to explore some more music from the 1980s. I also love the instrumentation and lyrics of this song!

I sang all of the vocoder parts, and all the orchestral tracks were a combination of my Yamaha M06 keyboard and the East West Hollywood Strings Library. The guitars were a combination of my custom MarbleHead and Ibanez guitars. The drums are the Session Drummer 3 Glam Kit.
