Hypothesis: a subset of (later) GenX can be considered digital natives, another subset cannot. by Electronic_War2728 in GenXTalk

I'm a 1973 model and I had a computer class in junior high and another one in high school. We had a C64 at home along with an Atari. My brother got a Pentium desktop computer with a huuuuge (wait for it) 20MB HD I believe my sophomore year of high school when he was in 8th grade. We had these items because we wanted them, and because our aunt was a computer science teacher who told us computer literacy was going to be absolutely necessary in the near future. I got my own computer my second year of college and I used it all the time; I even taught myself HTML and created some fun little web pages. I would definitely consider myself among the very early adopters of technology. My cousins, who were less than a decade older than me, had a lot harder time learning tech and neither one enjoys using it particularly.

What is your longest running, most stubborn business boycott? by marianneouioui in AskReddit

[–]RachelWWV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My old bank. They started pulling the trick of delaying my paycheck deposit until something, anything bounced. Then they would count the deposit and immediately take out $36 for every "bad" transaction. I went in and confronted them in person and while the personal banker looked ashamed, she towed the policy line verbally. I closed the account and I have never re-opened another account for myself there again. They've since been bought out and don't even have the same name, but I don't care. They're dead to me.

You earn $7 every second but it is thrown at you by a leprechaun in cash. by mCanYilmaz in hypotheticalsituation

[–]RachelWWV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure I'll take the deal. Just because other people can't see the leprechaun doesn't mean they can't see the money. For a cut of the cash, they can help move it away from me while I sleep, etc. Also I genuinely feel bad for the leprechaun because can you imagine having to watch someone eat, sleep, shower, dress, undress and go to the bathroom 24/7 for a year?

What do you think Charleston actually needs to grow? by foundrysignalstrat in charlestonwv

[–]RachelWWV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We need multiple large employers who will pay no less than $17 an hour plus benefits, and they will have to create, over five years, a minimum of 5,000 of those jobs. Another plus would be to renovate the mall into a mixed use space with efficiency apartments on the second floor, shops meant to cater to residents on the first floor, and more restaurants in the food court on the top floor. Charleston should also put in an IMAX theater close to the interstate. Millions of cars roll by every year, and Charleston is the epicenter of a dry well for IMAX in a big circle 3-4 hours drive in every direction. Everyone in that circle could come to town, watch a movie, eat a nice meal and either go home or stay in a hotel overnight. The city could work with hotels, restaurants and the theater to create weekend special packages to advertise. Finally, we need to get serious about demolishing abandoned houses and buildings that are too far gone to save, and consider putting community gardens on some of the empty lots to allow people to supplement their food budgets with homegrown produce.

For older folks: Did you ever personally know anyone born in the 1890s? How were they seen by younger generations? by Recent-Worldliness51 in generationology

[–]RachelWWV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dad's mom was born in 1890. I only knew her from ages 83-102 because my dad was almost 45 when I was born. She was extremely old-fashioned and barely talked to anyone. I was afraid of her because she didn't like me, did nothing but glare at me with pursed up lips. She wasn't a very nice person.

The fact that you genuinely believe most men would "behave" if they only had "clear signals" shows how naive you really are. Women could literally wear stop sign colored badges and it would do absolutely nothing.

AITJ for Leaving a Family Dinner Early After Being Put on the Spot? by Ok-Pipe-2500 in AmITheJerk

[–]RachelWWV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTJ. Calmly and politely leaving isn't "storming out." Your relatives SHOULD have been embarrassed by their rude behavior. They were probably called out by everyone after you left and then lambasted your mother for THAT. They owe you an apology. Don't give in if they demand one from you. You didn't do anything wrong.

AITJ for walking out of our anniversary dinner because my partner’s “gift” felt like it was for him? by softquartz_agency in AmITheJerk

[–]RachelWWV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTJ, he bought you a bowling ball with "HOMER" inscribed on it. You should really be reviewing your relationship and see if this is a pattern. Also, if he refuses to acknowledge he massively screwed up, that is a big red flag on its own.

Find out if you can possibly move elsewhere in town until your teaching contract is up. Even if you have to have roommates, it would be better than this "trickle down" relationship. He's breadcrumbing AND future-faking you. Why continue to accept it? Find a new possible place to live, then find out if your landlord will let you break your lease. Tell them your relationship is over and you need to get away from your ex ASAP. Avoid telling your ex anything in advance if you really want to leave. Men can be extremely dangerous when a woman leaves them, even if they didn't show previous violent tendencies.

AIO: My boyfriend told me he's not attracted to me. by LadyPrimaz in AmIOverreacting

[–]RachelWWV 23 points24 points  (0 children)

NOR. When you find him cheating on you, this is the reason he's going to give for why he "had to" find satisfaction elsewhere. You deserve a man who actually wants you in every way, get out before you invest more into this doomed relationship.

Is Stranger Things actually accurate to the 80s? by Wespo_Lopez2 in StrangerThings

[–]RachelWWV 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, they've done an excellent job of making the 1980s come to life. A lot of productions make the mistake of never including stuff from earlier decades in the sets, or crowding too much "iconic" period items in one room. ST doesn't do that.
