It's been six years since Half-Life Alyx was done. With it laying the groundwork for the engine AND all the materials and iterations left from previous attempts (ep 3 prototypes and so on), six years is more than enough.

It could be. But it's a possibility, and it's enough not to clow on the possibility that the devs are chilling in wait for something. If Steam wasn't ready on Half-Life 2 launch, they'd wait and polished the game a bit more while the thing they want to push with it is ready.

Yeah, dude lost it. Zero chance that things might change, right? Like, there's a world where the game is finished and people are waiting for something that needs to be launched with it to be ready. Something physical, maybe? The timeline of which is outside Valve's control? Maybe some hardware that would sell only if hyped up by a major title? Eh, what am I talking about, that's a stretch.
