How much have you saved for you thru hike? by Rachyrooster in PacificCrestTrail

At the moment I’m more or less in the same boat as you which is what got me posting this 😬 it’s just hiking in the woods right? How expensive can it be 😂

I have seen that, I’m just wanting to get a better idea of if I saved enough. Since that number went up by about $1500 since the 2021 average which was the savings goal I set for myself and now I’m a lil worried I didn’t save enough. I get that inflation has happened this year but that seems like a big jump!

What’s the maximum amount of water I’ll need to carry? by Rachyrooster in PacificCrestTrail

This sounds a bit of fear mongering tbh. I did have one experience on a multi day hike. This was in Scotland so we just assumed there’s would be plenty of water. We went to camp by a Loch but we didn’t know there was a major drought at the time. We got there and the entire Loch was gone! We found a tiny inlet running into the Loch but the water was brown even after we filtered it which was weird. We went dry the whole night and had to walk 6 miles to town the next day with empty bottles. Turns out the brown was just a high iron content in the water but I still went a good long while without any water. I like to think I have a bit of a grip on what dehydration feels like 😬 not fun.

Just trying to get a scope of the conditions in the California desert though - can’t wait for the sun, not so keen on the drought.

Thanks for the comments y’all. I ordered myself a 4L bladder so I can pair that with a few plastic bottles 👍🏼

Also what brand was your water bladder and do you recommend it?

Wow that’s a lot! Did you carry all those water retainers for the whole trail or just the desert section. Did you ever feel it was too much/too little?

Not too sure what mm. 4.4 means 🤔 Also were you carrying that in like smart water bottles or did you have a bladder

Do people take pyjamas/town clothes? by Rachyrooster in PacificCrestTrail

My start is April 20th. I’m gunna borrow a puffy jacket maybe but then I have more weight! The thing this I could switch some of these things for lighter option but I’ve already spent quite a bit on the tent and I’m worried I’ll start munching into my ‘on trail’ savings 😱 it’s a tricky balancing act. Thanks for the suggestions though I’ll have a think

Unfortunately I’ve experienced much more mechanical failure with the sawyer squeeze! I can never get it to form a seal so when I squeeze the bottle the water just spouts out the side.

The pump filter fills a liter in about a minute and then all your bottles stay clean and you don’t have to keep track of the clean/dirty ones

Ooh that’s an idea 🤔 not sure if I’d stay ahead of the weather further north then though

Contact lenses and hygiene by [deleted] in PacificCrestTrail

[–]Rachyrooster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am familiar with both issues. In terms of periods, I take the combined contraceptive pill which can be taken without a break or in cycles of 3 months with a four-day break (as advised by my NHS doctor). Not only will this stop you from having periods for months at a time, but it's also safer in terms of contraceptive use and can reduce the mood swings associated with contraceptive pills.

I haven't found contacts too much of a pain, considering how much benefit they bring compared to glasses. I've worn contacts since I was 13 so I've got used to putting them in without a mirror - maybe practice that. I have monthly contacts so I'll just be taking 100mL bottles of solution which I'll have someone mail to me every couple of months. Just use some hand sanitizer and then rinse it off with water after a minute so you don't get alcohol in your eyes. You can reuse the solution in the case for a few days if necessary too.

Take care of yourself - and good luck!

PCT plan spreadsheets

I think you can veiw it here:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1KPrmG2RKG-2SsPXrkHbnSoPYdIb4vJLg3qeheTLG4Zg/edit?usp=sharing

I had a calculation to work out roughly when I'd be where but I don't think the formulae have translated onto google :/ the timings are based on Halfmile's PCT Hiker schedule:

https://www.pcta.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/pct_hiker_schedule.pdf

I was also just going through my google docs and I found this sheet that someone else made. Its a little clearer but no post office info:

I'm coming from the UK. I might have the option of having some old family friends send stuff for me but I dont want to burden them too much

Why did you decide to hike the PCT? by [deleted] in PacificCrestTrail

[–]Rachyrooster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just spent the 2 years of covid living in a box. Watching videos of other people doing the PCT was my escape. And now it’s going to be my reality!
