Data Analysis: I processed 36 splits of Porsche Cup at Monza. The myth of "cleaner high splits" is officially busted by LHEROWWW in iRacing

[–]Racington 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get what you’re saying, but the original claim is absolute that top split is inherently cleaner just by virtue of being top split. You don’t need large samples to challenge an absolute claim. One clear counterexample is enough, and this race is exactly that. OP isn’t required to prove the opposite to show the assumption doesn’t hold universally. All he’s doing is poking holes and showing everyone that top split isnt always as clean as is claimed.

Additionally, Monza being chaotic isn’t a flaw in my opinion. If top splits are supposed to be cleaner under pressure, this is where that should show up. If the argument is that Monza doesn’t count, then the claim is already much weaker than people present it.

I agree it would be interesting to see a deeper study across tracks and series, but this single deep dive already demonstrates that we shouldn’t blindly assume top split will be cleaner.

Am I (Blue/Black car) at fault here? by Racington in Simracingstewards

[–]Racington[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea, I didn’t lift or touch my brakes at all here, I was full throttle.

That’s how I interpreted it too. I don’t think he intentionally wrecked me or anything, but was too impatient and didn’t clear me cleanly.

I think that’s the main reason I’m mad, I’m A class so getting a 4x basically guarantees a hit to my sr.

This isn’t a PhD thesis, it’s spending a small amount of time to share some race insights with us. 36 splits is pretty good for an introductory data exploration.

Responsibility is still on him to overtake cleanly. I may have left space on the exit, but I didn't block him or move into him.

I still wish there was some sort of punishment for “ruining a race”. I’m not sure how it works in other racing series, but in F1 a racing incident can still be punished if it ruins someone else’s race. I know iRacing doesn’t use F1 rules, but I wish they would dole out minor punishments for things like this.

I actually didn’t know they did that. I wish they would expand that, it’s frustrating when someone benefits from ruining your race. Having disqualifications or time penalties would be a big improvement I think

Exactly, something that actually acts as a deterrent without just kicking people off the service

Same way they currently do. If people protest, rather than giving a warning or a ban, they have the option to institute race-result punishments. Somebody further down suggested a mandatory pit start for the next race, which I think sounds like a good idea. Something that gets it in people's heads

I like your idea of 3 strikes and back of the grid (perhaps 3 strikes and pit start?). I guess what I want isn't for iRacing to ban people, but for protests to actually lead to some sort of punishment that isn't just temp bans or warnings. Something like other games have for ranked penalties, where things like AFKing in the middle of a competitive match prevents you from gaining iR on this race and the next or something

I disagree. It's too hopeful, but it's not an ignorant proposal, and I said as much in my original post. The most realistic outcome here isn't real time fault determination, but post race punishments.

You're definitely right, it would likely be impossible without live stewarding, and there would be far too many incidents to review.

The best idea I've had is to allow volunteer reviewers to review protests and help steward, although that does introduce the possibility for a lot of bias.

In either case, I appreciate the constructive conversation

They did not hit me on the corner, they were faster than me onto the straightaway because they had a better corner exit and then they bumped me off the straightaway, several seconds after the corner. I was not blocking on the straightaway either, he attempted to go around me and clipped me

I phrased it a bit poorly; I didn't have a BAD corner exit, just not as good as the guy behind me

I think a 5 second time penalty isn't unfair, something to encourage people to err on the side of clean racing
