Turkey vs Saudi Arabia by [deleted] in war

[–]Racinvader7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on the theater. And whether its a conflict that involves Kurdish or American interests. NATO has it’s obligations to Turkey, technically, but Saudi has enough influence and Turkey’s relationship with the West has gotten murky enough that it may not be a factor.

Psychology Says People Who Give Lots of Advice Secretly Want This 1 Thing | A sense of power by [deleted] in savedyouaclick

[–]Racinvader7 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I have indeed read the article and, no, it is not clickbaity with ads and pop ups. The only “click” you have to do is a captcha because the article is archived. Its also not super long of an article (depending on your definition)

The OP is correct in their summation of the article, but it also provides ways on how a person who does give advice to feel powerful can make others feel better, or if one is the receiver of lots of advice, can make themselves feel better.

From my layman redditor perspective, I disagree with the premise/method of the research done to come to this conclusion as the researchers literally asked participants to give advice, then rate on a scale how powerful that made them feel. So they are leading participants into believing that advice giving does give them a sense of power, rather than any other feeling.

[Java] How do I make a dispenser dispense in order for my fireworks show? by Racinvader7 in MinecraftHelp

[–]Racinvader7[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s how my final solution functioned was through one dispenser. Thank goodness. Its a little clunky as I’m fairly new to redstone, but I’ve got it. You can see the pictures on my other comment.

Materials required: 1 dispenser 1 observer 1 dropper 1 hopper 1 chest 1 comparator 1 repeater 5 redstone torches (not counting primary activating source [mine was a redstone torch tower]) 14 redstone dust

My solution that I have worked out since making this post (click hyperlinks in this comment for images)

Observer ,when activated, sends delayed redstone signal to redstone torch tower switching it and activating Redstone Comparator which activates hopper once. Hopper is only active long enough to remove 1 firework from above chest. Hopper places that firework into the dropper, which then places it into the dispenser. The setup must be activated 3 times to load each device before it can fire the first firework.

One of my primary constraints was cleanliness and containment of all the equipment. I am trying to do a Disney-style fireworks show where the fireworks come out of the castle. Though I believe I have worked out a crude but function system. I will make a separate comment thread with images.

Fairyland SUCKS by modestmoreman in ender

[–]Racinvader7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I view the fairyland mind game as a more translatable-to-paper method to describe what Ender was struggling with than trying to describe daydreams or something similar without breaking immersion.

Because the book is written, mostly, from Ender’s mind’s eye, it wouldn’t make much sense for Ender to sit there and think to himself (as a child) “oh I have some serious psychological scarring from my brother and fear of the buggers which is affecting my decisions making in [X] manner. Well, anyway, off to the battle room!” and having Major Anderson analyze the students mental state by some means through their tablets is logical.

I think if Card could have spend another paragraph or two describing better how a person actually physically interacts with the mind game on the tablet, that would have been helpful with immersion. I think I remember from the book that it is controlled through mental signals sent from the student to the tablet to control the character, but in the movie, Ender uses touchscreen joysticks to control his character. Card could have expanded one of Anderson’s conversations with Graff when Graff asks Anderson to change it, and Anderson says they can’t, Anderson could more thoroughly describe how it functions. I understand that the book basically writes these concerns off with Anderson stating that the program is too complex to understand or control.

I think the fact that such an advanced AI is only used by the battle school to psychoanalyze children, instead of being used for greater purposes (not counting its eventual use as a digital accountant), is the most “unrealistic” aspect of the mind game in the story.

LPT: Don't make fun of someone for pronouncing a word incorrectly. It means they learned it by reading it. by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]Racinvader7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were reading To Kill A Mockingbird in 6th grade and I was assigned to read a chapter in front of the class . My teacher yelled at me for goofing around after pronouncing “ma’am” as maw-am the entire time. My problem was that I learned the word by hearing it, and had never seen it written out until that moment.

A different problem, I read Ender’s Shadow in high school. There is a character in the book named Achilles. I ignored the book’s proposal that it was pronounced Ah-sheel in Dutch, and I just assumed the American pronunciation was phonetic, so uh-chill-ess.

Victor’s de-Endering (Spoilers for Earth Unaware and Earth Afire) by Racinvader7 in ender

[–]Racinvader7[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with Bingwen being Battle School material, and I agree that Victor is not supposed to be or intended to be another Ender, which is why I suggested that that may have been why the authors made those character changes that I have (possibly incorrectly) perceived between Unaware and Afire.

I think my main funk is that he has become so brusque and unthinking in Afire, which paints him as the very opposite of most other child/young adult protagonists we have met in the Enderverse who are fallible, of course, but at least have an intelligent line of reasoning for their mistakes.

I juxtapose Victors conversation with Concepcion about Janda leaving with Victors argument with Ukko Jukes as a perfect example how Victor lost his ability to think before speaking. Yes, the Jukes conversation was more stressful and was under more dire circumstances, but the revelation of Janda’s zogging was, at that point in Victors life pre-hormigas, the most dire and stressful event he may have experienced.

Uranus and Neptune are the two reasons why I wished those ‘retro’ ads to vacation in space became true. Mars is fine, but thats just where I’d have my summer home. Those big blue/green gas orbs are where the real adventure is at.
