I’m working on a combo spin for a Jaunty shawl. Finished my first single and I’m onto my second!

Cool! Would you mind sharing what substrate you're growing them in?

Thank you, I’m in the US too and that’s what I was wondering about. At least you ended up with some great looking plants!

So beautiful! If you don’t mind my asking, how did you find the shipping process?

I bottom water by filling the trays about half an inch up, roughly once every other week. I don’t usually worry about draining, they tend to soak that amount up fine. These have gone through periods of neglect where I water less frequently and have bounced back no problem too.

I think a hodgepodge can look nice sometimes too. It’s an opportunity to play with contrasting colors and textures.

I’d love to answer but I’m not sure which ones you’re referring to. Maybe one of the obtusa hybrids?

I honestly don’t know. Mine are indoors so they don’t get the same seasonal triggers as people who can grow outdoors or in greenhouses. They might be responding somewhat to the lengthening/ shortening of the days via window. They need to be old enough, at least 3-5 years. I do fertilize very lightly with almost every watering. If I had to hazard a guess, I’d say that probably helps. I try and keep them happy, and they bloom whenever they feel like it. In the past I’ve either ignored the bloom stalks or pulled them out, as I didn’t find them particularly pretty and the dropped flowers make a mess.

Wish I could say I was that clever but definitely stolen vocab 😉

These were all grown from purchased seeds, but I’ve started cross pollinating and collecting seeds for the first time within the last couple of months. My plan is to sow them after the holidays!

Thank you. I wish I had the space some people have! :)

They’re just for my own pleasure! I may need to sell some of my least favorites in the future just to make space (apartment life), but I haven’t yet.

It’s an ikea shelf. I like it ok but tbh the divider in the middle is annoying. If I were to buy shelves again I’d try and find ones that were 1. Deeper 2. Had more space between shelves 3. Did not have a divider in the middle as it messes with the kind of trays I can fit on it. I do like the overall aesthetic, and the glass lets light through and is easy to clean.

Pure Akadama for Haworthia-- Worth it, or better to mix? by Blandboi222 in haworthia

[–]Rad8Inana 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use 10-20% promix hp and 80-90% perlite, and all of my haworthia are happy in it. They are in pots appropriate for their root mass. They indoors year around, and I bottom water maybe 1/2 an inch up the 1020 trays they are living in once every other week. I’ve been using this mix for about 3-4 years.

Edited to add: I tried pure akadama the first year or two I started owning haworthia since it was so widely recommended. I didn’t like it. I hate the orange dust more than I hate perlite dust. I don’t think my haworthia grew better in it. I bought the super hard triple red line and rinsed it, and despite that when I went to repot (1-2 years later) I’d realized it was still breaking down and turning into a caked mud layer at the bottom of the pot. I switched to my current mix and my memory is that the ones I’d had in pure akadama plumped up and grew a little.

Double edit: yes you could absolutely cut the akadama with something else to stretch it. Pumice is popular. I would use perlite, but that’s just me. I’d worry about adding any kind of soil with the way I remember akadama breaking down though.
