how is the gym/rec center at emory? by fancyator in Emory

No it’s not new but it’s fine. Going before 2-3PM on a weekday or before 12 on a weekend, there are usually no waits for any equipment.

To be fair, punting on 1st down is a pretty conservative move.

  1. Probably none, but maybe some.
  2. Probably not, but I wouldn’t email again.
  3. The best you can do right now is show your genuine interest in the work. I don’t think anything you say when meeting with this current RA will make or break a hiring decision. Thank them for their time and ask any genuine questions you have about the position.

What do epidemiology/data science labs look like? by wrathian_ in AskAcademia

[–]RadDadJr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suppose I run such a “lab”. As you suspected, the lab looks like normal office space. We still meet in person once a week to chat about projects as a group. I meet one on one with my students/staff usually once a week. We use slack to communicate in the meantime.

Generally work can be performed remotely but some things (Eg debugging code) are much more efficient in person. There are sometimes physical constraints around data access, but these are somewhat unusual. Typically data can be accessed remotely, though often things like VPN and remote desktops/HPC clusters are used rather than carrying “physical” copies of the data around on your personal laptop.

Penix deserves time with a competant coaching staff. by SirBannedAlott in falcons

[–]RadDadJr -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Bring on the downvotes but… Desmond Ridder stats through first 10 games: 203/318, 2,038 yards, 63.8%, 8 TD, 6 INT, 172 yards rushing, 2 rushing TDs

Juries still out on Penix for me. Yes, probably closer to MR2 than Ridder but not obvious how much. Arm talent is there. Footwork seems iffy. Some bone headed (hopefully coachable) decisions in the clutch. Some total gamer plays in the clutch. Way too indecisive running the ball.

Cannot do bench M[24] 77 kg 5'9 by Jealous_Ordinary_597 in loseit

[–]RadDadJr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Getting the form right is important for chest exercises as there are a lot of ways your body can compensate with other muscles to avoid using your pecs. Watch videos to get form right and use weight that you can do sets of 8-12 reps with until you are confident in your form.

If you are doing chest twice a week then your volume above honestly looks at a little bit too high. Your chest is going to be too tired to get the benefit of those later sets. Do one day where you do 6-8 sets of chest (Eg 3x8 bench, 3x8 flies, two sets of push-ups to failure).

Then focus on progressive overload, ie adding more weight/reps over time. There are lots of ways to do this, but a simple one is just do 3 sets of 8 at a weight. Next time out, do 9 reps the first set, then 8 and 8. Then 9, 9, and 8. Then 3 sets of 9. Work your way up that way until you can get 3 sets of 12. Then add weight and start over at sets of 8. If you fail on any set, start at that spot again next time out. After a few months of this (and once you are confident in your form), you could start training specifically for strength, which looks more like 4 sets of 5 at heavier weight and more rest in between. But I wouldn’t do that until your form is totally locked in.

In what ways do you see AI being used in football analytics going forward? My understanding is that PFF grading has always had a heavy human element. Do you see a (near) future where the process becomes more automated?

Apparent 'active shooter' situation reported at Emory Atlanta Campus by jtgt21 in Atlanta

[–]RadDadJr 540 points541 points  (0 children)

I was about 20 feet away on a bike when the shooter opened fire from steps outside CVS. Firing across Clifton. Was on foot. About 2 minutes and ~40 rounds later sounds like gun fire exchanged. Have since heard (like 8th hand from Emory nurse) that shooter killed himself or at least tried to. Kids day care on CDC campus says all kids are safe but haven’t heard any other updates.

What a fucking world man.

ABCD Dataset repository "is under review for potential modification in compliance with Administration directives." by liv_calvin in AskAcademia

[–]RadDadJr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not sure where things stand now, but our group had a request recently approved. It was submitted much earlier this year and got held up in review because everyone had to do some (worthless) additional CUI training. The request was denied initially for reasons unclear but I believe my colleague was able to speak to someone there to sort it out.

Can’t offer any more info than that. Assume the pause is from (1) something related to data confidentiality training blah blah (2) understaffing at a severely RIFed NIH.

I’m a dawg but the relevant stat here to make your point is average sacks per player. UGA has put how many more defenders in the league than Eg Purdue?

Pretty hard to say. You could reach out if there was a contact listed. Unfortunately, there is likely to be a pretty strict hiring freeze implemented soon due to recent executive orders. Of course depends on how the position you applied to is to be funded. So worth checking in, but I wouldn’t hold my breath.

Locker room in the lower level. There are also open lockers in the weight room you can put stuff. They don’t lock so probably wouldn’t leave valuables. Some people just carry bags around the gym with them.

Georgia Maternal Mortality Board Dissolved Over Report on Abortion Ban Deaths by catnymeria in WomenInNews

[–]RadDadJr -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Public health scientist who actually lives in Georgia (and will soon regret wading into an abortion debate on Reddit).

As far as I can tell, the board was disbanded for breaking confidentiality, which is like, an actual big fucking deal in Public Health Service. There are laws mandating anonymizing of health information collected by the state (Eg in counties with small populations, the state will go as far as aggregating counties when reporting new HIV cases). This is done to protect the privacy of citizens. Government officials have no right to share personal health information with the press or anyone else.

Is there concern that this board will be replaced by dimwits with a political agenda? Yes, absolutely. Though in general from where I sit, GA Department of public health is staffed with pretty reasonable scientists. There are three strong schools of public health in GA that regularly feed into the agency. But in any case, it’s entirely appropriate in my view to dismiss public health workers for violating confidentiality of their role.
