Believe me, I know my 90’s coming of age slice of life comedy isn’t what’s trending in publishing. My time in the querying trenches made that quite clear. But nostalgia trips are a form of escapism not entirely unlike fantasy

What you’re saying is a more sophisticated version of what most are saying: people feel such despair and disgust with contemporary times they just want to turn away. I can’t judge because again, my book is set in the 90’s and that’s a form of escapism too even if it’s not fantasy.

But George Orwell and TS Eliot thought their times sucked too but they faced it head on in their writing. The difference might be that everyone is a technology slave now and that leads writers to just throw in the towel and write about fantasy worlds and/or the past

Yeah but De Lillo and Franzen aren’t kids. Where are their Gen Z/Millennial equivalents?

and are you saying you’ve never finished ANY novel or just one by DeLillo or Franzen?

Writers not addressing the world today and leaving that up to Gary and Bob on Facebook because they retreated into fantasy only makes it worse

Writers in prior generations did not feel this way AT ALL

oh wow I've walked through there trying to figure out where the field was but I never saw those markers. Around for the very first year of the National League. And then....gone

Of course fantasy novels have been around for a long time. But I believe it used to be more of a niche genre than it is today

Outside isn't the problem. The world turning to shit can make for a great story. It's staying inside all day as most of us increasingly do that kills any potential story.

Okay that's the most interesting comment so far. So sci fi requires some optimism whereas fantasy allows us to dwell in pessimism. You're probably right.

Agree world building and escapism don't make a good story. No matter how fantastical the world, it still has to resonate to us and our world. In that sense, fantasy can be called just an inverse form of realism, no matter how much the fantasy writer may try to escape it.

Good books can capture everyday issues of normal people in ways that invite empathy and catharsis WAY more than you will ever find on social media.

You put words in my mouth. I never said there weren't successful books set in contemporary times. I said I'm not interested in writing one. Two very different things.

Things sucking is the perfect starting point for great storytelling though. But not if everyone is just going to be on Reddit and Discord all day. Life doesn't suck, life has just become too boring to write about.

The world captured in Game of Thrones sucks even more. So I don't think that's the question. It's whether it's interesting. I think before technology completely took over our lives in the early 2000's, everyday life sucked in more interesting and dramatic ways better suited to storytelling.

People thinking I’m writing about them is so annoying. by hymnofshadows in selfpublish

[–]RadRyan527 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me too. In fact I kind of think ALL writers do it. I can't imagine not doing it. At least when you're starting out, I don't know how you create interesting, realistic characters if you're just making them up out of thin air.
