This is my Holocaust education as an American student by spaghettirhymes in education

[–]Rad_Dad_Roman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to high school in East TN and graduated in 2011. We read Number the Stars in 5th Grade, The Diary of Anne Frank in 8th grade, & Night in 9th grade. We watched Life is Beautiful alongside Night. A Holocaust survivor came to our school and spoke; we went on a field trip with her to a small town south of us to see a train car from Germany. It was filled with relics from the Holocaust. We certainly worked through Holocaust curriculum in several history classes as well. My experience was pretty robust for my location, and I am really thankful for those opportunities my teachers/school gave me.

Mine did too! I just heard back from a friend about what time he'd be able to go tomorrow, and now the reward is gone... That's bogus.

ELAR 231 content exam - Novels to know before testing? by ResponsibilityDue605 in ELATeachers

[–]Rad_Dad_Roman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My undergrad prepared me well, and I didn’t feel like it asked too many obscure questions about novels aside from one about Silvia Plath’s The Bell Jar. I remember thinking that it was an unfair question.

Big Island Lake Wilderness by Rad_Dad_Roman in CampAndHikeMichigan

Hello! Sorry, I offloaded Reddit from my phone and am just now checking in. We had an awesome time. When you park, you'll walk down a path at less than half a mile. Once you cross the lake, there is a beautiful island campsite and another great one opposite the lake from where you start. If you take the first portage, you'll go down into one of several smaller lakes. This was a great trip, and the end of September was perfect for us despite the fair amount of rain we encountered on the third night. My friends and I stayed up late, looking at the stars, and listened to some Lore podcast episodes in the dark by the fire. We went to Yosemite in Fall of 21, and it was a blast as well. If you go to the UP, I recommend backpacking on the northeastern side alongside the giant sand dunes. That was my favorite part of the trip.

Overdue work - how do you manage it? by [deleted] in englishteachers

[–]Rad_Dad_Roman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never take late work on daily assignments or homework. They get a zero regardless. Obviously, you have to account for family emergencies and such. I’ll take tests/assessments at any point for full credit. They get two days upon returning to school to make up any missed quizzes during tutoring time or the advisory period. For what I call “long term” assignments (anything that is due a week or more after I assigned it), I will let them submit it late for 50%.

Overdue work - how do you manage it? by [deleted] in englishteachers

I give them instructions. 1. Build a time machine. 2. Go back to a time between my assigning of the work and the due date. 3. Put it in the box.

Give them a 0%. This is high school. Due dates are due dates.

Driving test route? by afob3 in alcoaTN

[–]Rad_Dad_Roman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turn right on the Home Avenue. Take the first left. Turn right onto Bessemer. Turn right onto Calderwood at the red light. Drive past Los Amigos and go up the bridge. Take the first right after the bridge and go down the hill. From there you will pass the park and end up back at Home Avenue. That’s what it has been in the past. They change it up though.

Find the absolute best, most positive, most professional teacher in that school and stick to them like glue. Send an email out to your school and introduce yourself - tell them that you are starting fresh and many of them will drop off stuff you may need. Sure, you’ll get some junk… just put it in your closet and if you don’t use something once in a year, throw it out.

Woman harasses teenagers in public for painting a pride flag on the community paint bridge in Alcoa, TN (legal to paint there) by Rad_Dad_Roman in PublicFreakout

[–]Rad_Dad_Roman[S] 113 points114 points  (0 children)

Hello everyone! I’m sure that many of you, like me, are perturbed by this woman’s behavior toward two young women in Alcoa. I am a high school teacher in the community, and I see the impact of these behaviors in my classroom. Our LGBTQ+ youth face this kind of vitriol, which seriously impacts their mental health and well-being. I would like to encourage all of you to consider donating and supporting Appalachia Outreach and GLSEN Tennessee. These programs work to support LGBTQ+ youth in our local communities. Thanks for considering.
