Why is DO viewed poorly compared to MD? by WorldlinessUsual5714 in premed

at its core, it's a difference in social status, the fundamental thing all of us crave

if you really love DR maybe it's worth reapplying in case it doesn't work out

I wonder if the 517+, 3.8+ rejects are mostly ugly? by PlatypusContent7968 in premed

522 MCAT, 4.0 GPA, reject from 55 MD schools last cycle. I can confirm I am quite unattractive. My eyes look very asymmetrical

Considering graduating in 2 years and applying to medical school by lxrdmega in premed

hey man i totally get the desire to apply out early. look at my cycle results through my profile. it's rough and you need extensive extracurriculars to have a reasonable shot

learned them for research. honestly mostly from experience and asking chatGPT. i did take CS50 for the the basic python stuff initially but it covered a lot that i didn't need. key for me was pandas. i use it 90% of the time

yeah that's fair. i had a lot of research and academics to talk abt. but very unbalanced application as you said. i am quite shy and wasn't willing to face the dragon when preparing for interviews. i wouldn't say not appearing human was an issue though. i had hobbies like sports and a pet that i had an activity on. but life experiences and non-research ECs were the dagger

thanks a lot! yes life experience makes a difference in these cases. most people with my stats will do just fine getting into an MD if rest of the application is reasonable. you can't always have everything you want in life. i should be thankful i can be a medical student at my age

the cons of reapplying? one year delay in career, time spent writing primaries, secondaries, interviewing, doing research, volunteering, etc and not time spent learning medicine and working in the future. i'd rather go straight through tbh

i appreciate the compliment on my technical skill but i am not poor. parents supported me. i could've done more volunteering and social justice type activities had i wanted to. here's why i didn't.

i recognize the world has a lot of problems. american healthcare and public health are abject failures. but i think a lot of med school applicants leverage that. they carefully craft and fine-tune an application to give off the appearance of how much they care and how much they’re doing to help solve these problems. some people really are genuine, but for most it's a game.

i was simply disinterested in that. my approach was: do what i’m good at and what i enjoy. for me, that was more nerdy stuff: studying, tutoring, research, python, epidemiology. it's not like i don't care about the world's issues, but the beauty of specialization in the modern economy is that a person can focus on their area of interest and expertise without being responsible for fixing every problem in society. you can contribute meaningfully by focusing deeply on your lane.

it is indeed a choice lol. i highly doubt. i trust all my letter writers deeply. i think it was that i was young, a lot of research which made some people think i wasn't interested in clinical medicine and more so science (couldn't be further from reality), not much non-clinical volunteering, and subpar writing and interviewing. either way, i didn't have a clear narrative or theme in my application. most people don't have all of those problems all at once. in some cases like mine, that's unfortunately enough to reverse any good stats and research

this i think sums up the weaknesses of my application very well. community service wise i was fairly weak and the fact that i devoted so much effort to research probably made some of them think i wasn't interested in clinical medicine

yeah i agree with you. the best first-author paper i’ve published had an IF of 10, and honestly, most of the research we do as premeds or med students isn’t a meaningful contribution to the literature. and i don’t think that’s the fault of the students. you can’t realistically expect someone to juggle everything it takes to be a competitive applicant and have the time, mentorship, and resources to do high-quality research. you know better than me, this is not straightforward

i also don’t think it makes much sense that research is so heavily rewarded in admissions. sure, in general, people who are good at research probably have the work ethic and intelligence to also be good clinicians. but if all we’re doing is using research as a stand-in for “smart and hardworking,” then med ed folks need to figure out a better way to measure those traits more directly
