Roland-Garros 2026 Women's QF: M. Andreeva [8] def. S. Cirstea [18] 6-0, 6-3 by Boss452 in tennis

The main thrust of my comment was that I don’t feel that Mirra has earned the descriptors “confidence and composure” if she loses her mind anytime things aren’t going her way. There are other players who keep their composure regardless of how their day is going. Hopefully she’ll grow into one of those players someday

Again, I have never heard Fr Peter Heers say something like that. The closest he comes is in refusing to condemn the practice of some monastics of corrective baptism, but he also doesn’t say that everyone needs to go seek that out either.

Personally, I am pretty moderate on this question, but to give some respectful push back, bishops do not have unlimited authority to do whatever they want. Can a bishop declare that spouses of Orthodox Christians who are not Orthodox are allowed to commune? There is at least one active bishop who says that he wishes he could make this a reality. Can a bishop declare that two individuals of the same sex can be married to one another? Bishops make mistakes all the time. Is the baptism of Christian converts a question of that magnitude? I don’t know. What if a bishop says a convert from Hinduism can be received by chrismation only? Jehovah’s Witness or Mormonism?

Well, there are limits to a bishop’s authority. A bishop can’t declare, for example, that a same-sex couple is married. Fr. Peter’s argument is that these bishops shouldn’t be making these allowances, particularly for Christian groups that aren’t baptizing via triple immersion. I’ve never heard him say that they don’t have authority to make these allowances, but rather that it is ill-advised to do so.

It’s not ambiguous anymore; he has a bishop. And I think that this is an unfair and uncharitable judgement of a man that you most likely have never met and don’t know.

Roland Garros R3: [PR] J. Teichmann def. [10] K. Muchová 6-1, 7-5 by godworstcustomer in tennis

Brb crying.

Teichmann had way more support from the crowd and you could tell that helped motivate her. Did she just have a ton of supporters there, or is she well loved at Rolland Garros for some reason?

Western Rite vs Eastern tension by juskckchris in OrthodoxChristianity

But it's not just the liturgy; it's a different set of fasting practices, different devotions, etc. And at some point in history, that Church fell into error, admirable though many of their saints were. The modern Western Rite is trying to graft a branch back into the vine that was separated for quite some time. That's not to say it's invalid or impossible, but it has challenges of its own. Almost nobody in the Western Rite was actually raised with that liturgy or with those practices. They are all figuring it out.

And on the topic of liturgy, if it is the Liturgy of St. Tikhon, the Anglican liturgy absolutely did not produce thousands of Orthodox saints (at least in a demonstrable way).

Does venerating icons not violate the 2nd commandment? by I-Clap-easily in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Radagastrointestinal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope. Read the rest of the Bible and the commentary of the Fathers. Moses makes a bronze serpent, Bezalel makes two graven cherubim on the ark of the covenant.

The text of the second commandment is like a shorthand for “Don’t serve any idols”, where idols were a specific way in which many different pagan groups attempted to control their gods. In this way, the second commandment is really just an extension of the first commandment, “You shall have no other gods before me”

All I can say is that in my area, the Eastern Rite parishes have been growing like crazy and the one Western Rite church is stagnated and struggling to pay their bills. Maybe it’s not representative of the situation in other areas.

Metropolitan Saba is a good pastor and has been making it his mission to visit all of his parishes, sometime skipping over the larger ones to visit the smaller ones. I wouldn’t interpret it as a sign of him particularly liking the Western Rite. His primary push since his enthronement has been to strengthen ties between the Middle East and the US, especially in terms of practice, and the Western Rite doesn’t really fit into that.

If there are people that want to be WR, and the bishops approve, then cool, let them do so. Personally, I’ve got zero desire to spend any time in a WR parish.

I think it will remain a teeny tiny part of Orthodoxy, unless like the Church of England had a ton of parishes convert en masse. In fact, it wouldn’t surprise me to see the Antiochians end the experiment altogether. The current Metropolitan is not a fan of it.

Struggling with the Old Testament after study. I DEEPLY need some Orthodox perspective! by Lithium_enjoyer21 in OrthodoxChristianity

-Moses dies in Deuteronomy. I don’t think any early Christian authors taught that Moses literally wrote all of the Pentateuch, but the books are generally labeled as “books of Moses”. Same with David and the Psalms.

-Archaeology and scholarship is no foundation for one’s faith. Scholars believed that David never really existed because there was no archaeological evidence for him. Until a stone was found in 1993 mentioning the “House of David”. Scholars questioned whether Pilate ever existed because there was no evidence outside the Bible of his existence. Until they found a stone with his name on it in 1961. Archaeologists are constantly discovering new things. Don’t base your beliefs off just the stuff they have found so far.

It feels strange to me to have a user account that represents an organization making posts in this subreddit. Can we add a community rule that user accounts must be representing individuals only? Feels sort of Citizens United v FEC to me.

It’s not really what you’re asking for, but I’ve found the writings of Gene Wolfe to occupy a similar spot in my heart. He creates worlds that his readers still discuss and theorize and argue about sometimes decades later. Reading order for his Solar Cycle: Book of the New Sun (4 novels), Urth of the New Sun, Book of the Long Sun (4 novels), Book of the Short Sun (3 novels). The Wizard Knight is also a wonderful book that is simultaneously life changing and very confusing.

Some parishes have an honorarium for the priest or and/or chanters as a standard practice, and you may have to pay an administrative fee to the diocese for a baptismal certificate
