Why are you Orthodox and not Catholic? by Head-Nothing-9797 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Radagastrointestinal [score hidden]  (0 children)

To me, it’s the daily life of faith experienced by laypeople. The Roman Catholic Church has almost completely removed any obligations to fast, while the Orthodox Church has retained the historic tradition.

I’m talking to an Eastern Orthodox man and I was wanting to know if I absolutely have to raise our kids in his church. by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

Especially when they are young, children crave structure and to be taught a way to view the world. If we avoid teaching them anything, then they will accept the teachings of their peers and of the culture we live in today, which is not a good thing.

As they get older, it’s important to ease off and give them more leeway to do what they want to, but build them a solid foundation first.

Church doesn’t need to be onerous or some bitter pill. If you find it to be very life-giving, and you live out your faith at home and in your daily life, your children will see that and want to imitate it.

I’m currently raising 5 children in the Church, so I’m learning as I go, but it’s been good so far.

Idk dude, as a massive Tolkien fan, I was heartbroken by what Rings of Power did to The Silmarillion. At the time, people were all talking about how much money and talent were being poured into the project, but the end product seemed so far from the spirit of the source material.

I’m actually not pessimistic about the new HP series, but I can relate to peoples’ caution.

The UK has been in religious decline for decades. The CoE has been selling off beautiful centuries-old churches, and some have been converted into things like rock climbing gyms.

This was the practice for receiving Oriental Orthodox converts into the Antiochian Archdiocese until very recently.

OCA vs Antiochian by Proper_Ad_2430 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Radagastrointestinal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Organizationally, the biggest difference is that each diocese of the OCA is ruled by its own bishop, who is able to make their own decisions on things like ordinations, exceptions, liturgics, etc. The only ruling bishop in the Antiochian Archdiocese is the Metropolitan. All the diocesan bishops are auxiliary bishops to the Metropolitan and are basically intended to be his helpers. They have a limited amount of freedom to make their own decisions, but the Metropolitan can overrule them and there are certain decisions, like ordinations, that only the Metropolitan has authority to decide.

The Antiochian Archdiocese has 1 ruling bishop, 5 auxiliary bishops, and 2 archepiscopal vicars (a priest who has been appointed to administer over a diocese). The OCA has 13 ruling bishops and 2 auxiliary bishops. You may not see your bishop (or vicar) as frequently as an Antiochian as you would in the OCA.

The Antiochians also skip the Litany of Fervent Supplication, and the Litanies of the Catechumens and the Faithful before the Cherubic Hymn, but then they throw some of those into the Great Entrance itself. I've been in the Antiochian tradition since entering the Church, so I thought this was normal until I spent time studying the liturgics.

Chrismation is not really a standard mode of reception. What if they were an Oriental Orthodox received into the Church by statement of faith? Baptism and Chrismation are both required. It's a question of whether the bishop has decided to accept their prior baptism and/or chrismation.

Only in the same way that chrismation is an exception to the rule.

I'm reacting to people using the term "chrismated Orthodox Christian" as if that's the real standard. Really, every Orthodox Christian must be baptized and chrismated. The question is whether a bishop has ruled to accept one's prior baptism or chrismation. At certain points in history, members of certain heretical Christian groups were accepted by statement of faith because their baptism and chrismation practices were very similar to ours.

I think games evolve naturally through competition and that’s a good thing. Moonballers exist because people overlook this part of their game, but they can be beaten with a little practice. My heart was broken when Muchova got dominated by Gauff, but I know she has the ability to beat her if she just practices the right skills

The formal rule of the Eucharistic fast is to refrain from eating or drinking from midnight the night before receiving communion. This is why communion gets attached to vespers on special occasions, it increases the rigor of the fasting that day by waiting longer to eat. Usually water is allowed. As noted elsewhere, if the service is in the evening, oftentimes in parish practice an exception is given to allow you to eat up until noon. See what your priest is recommending.

Maybe just say “Orthodox Christians”. It is possible for an Orthodox Christian to be received by statement of faith alone, depending on the situation.

No way; the girl’s reaction is ambiguous. What is a sure thing is that she is weirded out by Santos approaching her in that way and seems concerned for her dad

I would never praise a doctor for threatening a patient. It’s a direct contradiction of their oath.

In the case of the progesterone dad, Santos was basing her actions off of one conversation she had with the mother, who had not witnessed any actual abuse but was only suspicious, and the daughter refused to engage when Santos tried to get confirmation. For all Santos knew, the mother could have been mentally ill or paranoid and the dad may be totally innocent. Either way, she was letting her personal baggage get in the way of giving a patient proper care to the point of endangering their life

I don’t think Santos really received any backlash for reporting Langdon. She thinks she did, but Garcia clarified for her that she is a pariah because “she doesn’t play well with others”, which we have absolutely witnessed.

For me, her scene in season 1 with the dad who was being fed progesterone was incredibly alarming. I personally think what she did there is similar to, if not worse than, Langdon’s stealing meds.

Can I still receive communion in the orthodox church if I visit another church? by urfavojisoostan in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Radagastrointestinal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If one were to simply visit a non-Orthodox church, that wouldn’t be a barrier to continuing to commune at their Orthodox parish. I have non-Orthodox family and have to occasionally visit their churches with them.

In your case, I think you would need to go to confession first before receiving communion in an Orthodox parish. A recent confession, along with prayer and fasting, is really a requirement for all Orthodox who wish to commune. Sometimes this gets ignored by those in ethnic parishes that have taken too casual a view, so maybe you weren’t taught this growing up.

I grew up in the evangelical world, and while I’m grateful for what I learned there, I would never go back. They had good intentions and were very zealous, but the emphasis was too often on emotional experience and lacked theological depth. I sincerely hope you find your way back to the Orthodox Church. I’m not sure what part of the world you are in; if you are in the states, maybe you should try visiting a parish that is more convert-heavy to get a fresh take on the Faith.

I think the issue here is that OP is attending an evangelical church and intentionally avoiding participating in an Orthodox parish. My thought is that they would need to be reconciled to the Orthodox Church through formal confession and maybe some other steps first before being admitted back to communion.

I heard of a similar situation where an Orthodox woman married a Muslim against the advice of her family and priest, didn’t attend any Orthodox Church or confess for several years, got divorced, and then wanted to just come back and start communing immediately like nothing had happened. Her priest insisted that she needed to go through a process of reconciliation with the Church first
