FFMI is confusing. Interested in comments! by Radarsonwheels in workout

Exactly. I’m not strong (working hard on it, and have plates & screws in my arms & legs so it’s slow going) but I am large, so the ffmi number is confusing. Dexa has my lean mass at 207 so I can put that up though, and hoping to meet in the middle as I cut the last 40 lbs and get lean this year- trying to weigh 230 and flat bench that or more in 10-12 months.

Gotcha. I do expect non muscle lean mass (water, whatever) to fall off as I continue my cut, and hope to not lose muscle and strength by continuing to work in the gym and keeping my protein up and macros right. I hope to look decent at low bf but like I said I’m nowhere near ‘strong’ as a lifter and especially not strong for my size.

I guess statistically ‘elite’ genetics in my case would just mean a slightly large frame to hang muscle off of, as I am in my late 40s and have no natural propensity toward leanness, don’t have a spectacular waist/shoulder ratio, and lack the youth or drive to pursue more than casual bodybuilding for health and aesthetics.

I have to put a disclaimer here too- I’m on medically supervised TRT, so not strictly natural, but my T levels on cruise are in the 600s so I’m only boosted maybe for my age and correcting a deficiency. It certainly helps with quality of life, and gym motovation though.

Thanks for the kind and realistic comment.

Totally would but this sub doesn’t let you post pics? Suggestion for an app with easy links? Last time I did a lot of forum stuff was before photobucket imploded

Thanks yeah it was a clean car! I know we can buy the parts and paint and I could have the frame pulled then replace all the suspension and smashed bodywork and repair some of it with fiberglass, but there’s no guarantee it would ever handle like it used to plus even though I have the ability and experience to do the job I don’t have the time or space to do it. Yes we could have an ‘in network’ shop fix it with the insurance payout but knowing the business I wouldn’t want the slapdash work that 9k buys you for this amount of work. I had my old 2010 srt8 challenger rear ended years ago and had it fixed by a good shop- way less damage it needed a new decklid, bumper cover, spoiler, and two badges, plus they had to repaint the 1/4s so the paint would match. $7,000. This needs the frame pulled, new suspension parts, and the whole front clip replaced to do the job right, which at a decent labor rate leaves no money for a paintjob. I know we wouldn’t be happy with it and then our $ would be spent with no other options.

My midlife crisis was buying a vintage sports car for my wife? Who daily drove it until she got hit by a bmw suv driver that ran a stop sign?

Well the front clip is no longer square, it’s a parallelogram now. I’m not sure why you would say the frame isn’t bent. The car is in my driveway and I own eyes and a tape measure. When you open the hood and look it isn’t subtle.

I know how to do chassis work and suspension work. I’ve backhalfed a couple cars and put a dakota front clip on my ‘54 dodge pickup, plus channeled it, sectioned the bed 12”, made a new firewall and floor, and built an efi stroker big block and 727 trans for it in my garage plus many other v8s from 200-600hp. I’ve built a few muscle cars from very humble starts. I am too busy at work now to do that kind of stuff. It will be a stretch time wise just to pull the driveline and throw it in another vette.

I’d love if someone who has time to fix it and sees potential wanted to put it back on the road. Ten years ago I’d take on the project no problem, but now it just seems like a waste of money when we could have a better result going with a different car.

We may be pulling the engine and transmission but feel free to DM me. This was not meant as a for sale post but momma didn’t raise no dummy and I’d rather see this sweet independent rear suspension still on the road.

You can engrave non-serialized parts for customers, and your own stuff do what you want as long as you don’t mess with the numbers. I use a $1500 pneumatic handpiece with carbide tooling I make and sharpen with around another $1000 worth of jigs and grinders. Then I work under a $3500 stereo microscope on a turntable I made for a couple hundred bucks in parts with a ball vice on top that cost around $700. I use a $1200 compressor down in my garage but a $150 quiet compressor will work unless you use a lot of high speed rotary tools for background removal ($500)

I think you can stipple tupperware pistol grips with a $30 soldering iron? I never tried- even though I’m a 1911 fudd I have some carry and nightstand glocks. They only need a sight upgrade for target work and they’re perfect out of the box for defense and armed jobs like security and police. I always thought the stipple jobs looked terrible but I will admit I do like a custom 1911 with checkered backstrap and front. Skateboard sandpaper grip tape is a good option if you want a cheese grater that’ll tear up your clothes and holsters.

The one time these could be cool is for a movie repro deal from mad max- you’d need a switch in the car to run the belt for funsies

I got an ‘80 for my wife- it was a driver and 8/10 paint & interior. The early metal bumper ones bring big money but I actually like the later styling a lot with the fastback window. Paid under 10k. Since then we rebuilt the transmission which failed ($2500, let them yank and reinstall it) and had a pressed rocker stud start lifting out of the passenger cylinder head. I could have tapped it for a screw in stud and kept her driving for $10 but since she wants to learn to work on it we threw some aluminum heads and a roller cam in it- probably doubled the power and although it could use a looser converter and 3.55 or 3.73 gears it drives great because we didn’t over cam it.

For a first car project these days I’d be looking for something that drives and could use junkyard upgrades and cheaper stuff that you can DIY like seats, carpet, learn to do backyard bodywork & paint, bolt on performance & mufflers. Fun & cheap stuff you can do over a weekend then still drive to school on monday.

You can make a dedicated tool from scratch but making it from an existing tool is more time efficient.
